$OE is part of a highly diversified company unlike Cryptic. While PW now owns Cryptic and has more capital on hand then Atari did, I suspect they are on a much shorter leash.

With 4 parties involved in this game, two at each other throat and wanting there share of the revenue then their new owners must likely wanting thier ROI as soon as possible. I don't see Neverwinter being a money maker for Cryptic.

If Neverwinter fails, I don't expect PWI to be so forgiving if Cryptic goes continues to stay in the red especially when their other games make money.

If Crptic was to go under, I would't shead a tear.

NW is NOT A MMORPG, NOT A MMO.

And you need to chill.  mmorpg.com knows NW is a CORPG, as so do most readers here, as well as Cryptic. Nobody's trying to make it anything other than what it is.

But really, if you get right down to it and examine the way most MMOs are actually played, WoW, AoC, EQ, LotRO, and all the rest of these games are probably 80% SPRPG, 15% CORPG, and 5% (or less) MMORPG in terms of how they are actually played, since most time spent in-game is spent either solo or in a small group in some instance or other. If I play WoW nowadays, virtually the only time I ever run into other players at random is in town or city hubs, exactly as it will be in Neverwinter. I just don't think the difference between these categories is as huge as you seem to think it is.

Anyways, I'm glad mmorpg.com is thinking outside the box and covering games like this. I hope they continue to do so.

I will buy this game, who cares about all the whining and crying, it looks fun and I love the idea of creating my own content.

Are you all out of dollars or what! :P

The only way I can see Cryptic doing anything noteworthy is in being scrapped. Grab the talent and transfer them to PWI.

Then give the NW contract to PW.

And for crying out loud scrap cryptic's engine....it's garbage. There is probably some good code to be salvaged but not much. Modify The PWI engine instead.

Cryptic has some XP in making P2P mmorpg's PW should use that XP. Put Cryptic's team to work immediately on modifying the PW engine to use multithreading and OpenCL.

    I'm with you.

I don't feel the need to forge an idea fo my perfect game (even though I do have one) and then judge new games as to whether they fit my perfect idea.

I just take these games as they come. Quite frankly I'm more interested in this game than other Cryptic titles simply because I lose interest in super hero games very quickly.

This could be a very nice casual game. And I love the idea of player made content.

I'll be surprised if Cryptic gets another hit.

CoX did well despite Jack, not  because of him and his "vision".

I actually diddnt mind CO but now that Perfect world has taken it over i really dont know if i will play it anymore Every time i install a Perfect world game i wind up with my email stolen and my system boged down with spyware depending on what security program you use most times you have to dissable it just to play. I recently decided to give it another chance and installed perfect world and low and behold i had to retrive my password on my email and a few other games again. I just find it a little too strange that this seems to happen every time i give a perfect world game a chance. I really hope cryptic find a new home fast i was looking forward to neverwinter and now i dont know if ill even bother.

All I have to say is its cryptic,  they already had their last chance,  never winter is not an mmo and its going up in flames just like everything else they have touched in the past few years.

Honestly I don't know why anybody would let cryptic touch anything at this point.

Does it have to be an mmo? I know of people who love doing multiplayer games that aren't mmo's and they love them.

Not everyone requires an online game to be an mmo.

I also think their issues sprang from the idea that they touted the fact that they were making mmos. If they were to have said that Champions and STO were to be online multiplayer games and left it at that then I think they would have a lot less bad press.

Not all succesful online games are  MMOS and Cryptic made it clear first day that NWN is not an MMO. Infact not making a traditional MMORPG at this juncture of their career would be the best move.

I think Cryptic has shot itself in the foot already with CO and STO.  While I would have tried Neverwinter a few years ago, now that I have sampled Cryptics vision of what a game is, I am no longer interested and will not be lining up to buy this one on opening day.

With Cryptics recent track record, and the fact that they need cash badly based on the fact that Atari sold them and they have been taking a loss for the last several years, you can bet this game will be released just like their last two, buggy, low on content and big on C-Store items.  I dont understand how anyone would buy this game on opening day without waiting for a review.

I also think you need to research the part where you said these are basically the same guys who made CoH.  My understanding is that many of the talented people who made CoH stayed with NCsoft after the sale and were not a part of the new Cryptic under Jack "C-Store" Emmert.

    Neverwinter is Cryptic’s Last Chance

Actually STO was their last chance for me, beings as I stupidly bought CO. Won't even be touching this one. They are dead to me.

    1. Losing the Marvel license

    2. Champions online

    3. Star Trek Online

They have cleaned out many of the top level decision makers so maybe they can turn things around, but I will wait until they actually demonstrate that change before putting trust into them.

I agree with this and will wait this time around before making any purchases.  I was in beta for both, bought Champions with the hope that it would turn out alright and uninstalled a few days later.  I did not make the same mistake with STO and hope I can use the same good judgment with Neverwinter.

I don't understand why the auther says that Turbine claimed DDO isn't a MMO.

Taken straight from the updated current FAQ:

"Dungeons & Dragons Online®: Eberron Unlimited™ (or DDO for short) is the only FREE to play premium Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO) of its kind."

No, it doesn't say MMORPG, but having played DDO extensively it has far more RP in its content than any MMO I've played.

Not sure if the author was intending something else, but clearly Turbine thinks DDO is a MMO.

Personally, I won't be buying this game unless its gets outstanding reviews.

Ill have to disagree with CO being a bad game. Its very fun. The only problem i had with it is lack of content, which they seem to be fixing judging from the list of upcoming updates in the next few months @_@

Cryptic has yet to make a game with any good amount of actual content in it. Their randomly generated, recycle and repeat methodology just isn't up to snuff. I don't see that NWN is going to be much better considering the company making the game seems more concerned about charging customers a different way for the same boring crap they've been peddling for years. You can bet they still want the same amount of money for as little work as possible that's been the backbone for the rest of their games.

parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.

To me it seems all they really need to do is make sure the creation tool is robust enough and make a tolerable single player experience to make this a huge success.  Just look at NWN it was all about player made content.  If they do that well all else is just a bonus.

    /sigh

Darn Cryptic and their ability to generate my interest.

It's like their taunt skill is maxxed, and I'm just waiting to get "Mega Nut Punch"ed.

Will develop an original MMORPG title for money.
  • DraemosDraemos Member UncommonPosts: 1,521

can't say I agree w/ this segment.  The future development of STO is still this companies best and brightest hope.  If PW is smart, they'll dump the money into that game to make it hands down the best F2P on the market.

The NWN game is destined for mediocrity, even if it ends up being a good game.

Cryptic in general is in no danger of being shut down as long as they have the Startrek license.

  • KhalathwyrKhalathwyr Member UncommonPosts: 3,133

Cryptic certainly has a steep uphill climb ahead of them. The core D&D player (those that started with an edition prior to 4th) that are MMO players too have spoken with respect to what they want/expect out of a D&D online game. The descriptions of Neverwinter so far don't add up to it.

So, they have to hope they can steal players away from DDO plus grab enough other players that are more online gamer than Dungeons & Dragons roleplayer. Not an easy task, for sure.

I've heard it described many times as not quite an MMORPG. Well, whatever it is they'd best do it really well, which is a notch or 10 above what they shipped out with CO and STO. The Neverwinter name alone (which has more standing with D&D players more so than with just MMO/online gaming gamers) won't be enough to ensure a middling to raging success.

Interesting games are numbered? In what MMOs or in general? CD Projekt, Paradox Interactive, etc. make fantastic games and there are MMO companies that DO try, but when they release clunky, unpolished games because they have to.. gamers run. So, who's fault is that really?
  • UnsungTooUnsungToo Member Posts: 276

Not that I don't like playing games anymore because I do, but It's kinda hard to get excited about  MMORPGs or whatever anymore, it just seems like a waiting game now.

If I could afford the proper tools I would build one myself. I'm looking forward to a good low  to mid end Western MMO, Cowboys and farming, fishing hunting, gold mining, poker, brothels, oil rigs, crafting, housing, maybe Cowboys and Aliens:)) I dunno, sumtin along them lines. Just a well done Wild Wild West , Red Dead Redemption or My Mountain kinda theme, with that scroll in and out perspectives.

Then it's the old story again, what am I playing for. The end game, what is it? Is the world tha incredible that nothing else matters?

What do I want for an end game ? More land, more housing to decorate, more guns, more fishing and hunting and mining and whatever else kind of gear, You know.

More mini type games. Not real mini or things that don''t really fit the theme, but maybe poker, blackjack, light a match, distance shooting, biggest trophy animals, pets, mounts, biggest pumpkin,.

Trains but not really instanced on trains unless it's a swift travel situation, but one you can ride in and walk around in or hitch a ride on one of the train carts while mounted on your ride. Ostrich, horse, chicken and camel races, pig racing (the sky is the limit), knife throwing, carnival acts, snake oil salesmen, Town doctors, deputies vigilante's, outlaws, bible thumpers, miners, cooks,  Injun witch doctors.

Trophies and fish and fish tanks for display (was there fish tanks back then? Awe hell, just buy a pond to put on  the land a player owns and they can stock their own lake and feed the fish to grow a "Biggin" and then whoever catches it get's some kind of "Ew and ah" prize, and the breeder get's some kind of pat on the back too, all that wacky chit. But alot of it.... "Submerse me".

And the lovely but dangerous ladies of the brothels... Well maybe be careful with the ladies....

You know you go to the casino to play casino games, go to your house to do house stuff and farming or maybe you got a huge piece of land that you been raising the biggest "whatever on that people want to get to and the only way is to get permission from you you could charge a fee, or maybe they're your friends, there'a so many ways., And maybe a storage area for storage, farm your land, hunt for whatever  animals and enemies, do good deeds or bad deeds, rob banks donote to the lynch squad, whatever gets your rocks off. Get yer drops and loots and skills and,do the progression thing, crafting. You know, the norm , but with that little extra oomph with new area's resources, enemies missions, all that and...

I think it's really important for players to have something umm Moveable? Something they can faniggle with. Something I can call my own like an expanding housing system not just for clans or groups but for everyone. for those who like going solo too.

You wanna be able to add a room or change the style or size of the housing and the land it's on too, to do more with, maybe have like a Kaneva type house building thing or you know how it goes, maybe just  upgrade a little at a time or have to wait until you get the gold to pay off the addition ort he next prefab home or  the next size up piece of land and house you want to build up and do things with , more housing freedom than the LOTRO  solo player housing system currently has.

Yeah a good wild west  western type mmo is what I'm looking for.  If it's good, it'll steal the show... definitely not from every mmo but those not sure about whether they'yre happywith  the current game they're playin' will probably move on over, I would, no subs, buy it and play it like Guild Wars, pay for expansions all that crap.

Yeah a good Western MMO, and just make it fun to keep playin' I still don't know why there's not one out. LOTRO just ain't cuttin' it, it's fun but it's LOTRO. Not down playin' LOTRO, I like LOTRO, just sayin'.

    Peace :)

    Godspeed my fellow gamer

"Aside from that, they’re still mostly comprised of the guys who made City of Heroes such a widow-making experience in the early years."

Actually, that is incorrect: When Cryptic split off from CoH/CoV, most of the original CoH/CoV team stayed behind to form Paragon Studios; only a handful of people stayed on with Cryptic.

"Oh my, how horrible, someone is criticizing a MMO. Oh yeah, that is what a forum is about, looking at both sides. You rather have to be critical of anything in this genre as of late because the track record of these major studios has just been appalling." -Ozmodan
