MMO games that play similar to WoW which are good?

RudyRaccoonRudyRaccoon Member UncommonPosts: 475

Hi, now obviously I would never return to WoW considering the game has gone too easy into a child safe mode and too bad community wise. However I do like the gameplay aspect which we've all seen in other games by now. So I'm wondering what MMO's that are similar are worth playing?

My experience of such games, the most recent I had a gather into was LotRO, good but quests are pretty bad by being too difficult. Others I've played, Aion I guess was ok but too Korean-ish I would say. Runes of Magic...stay away from that if you don't like the idea of bag renting...

Everquest 2, the game goes brutal mode if you want a Lizard Paladin. :(

Warhammer, I have doubts getting into that now, seems like no-ones interested in it now. :(

Ones I have not played, Guild Wars I've not played but probably not worth getting into as Guild Wars 2 is coming evenutally. Age of Conan, probably in the same state as Warhammer so I have doubts on that too.

Is there any others that are out, whether they are good or bad?

You should actually try out Age of Conan. It just went free to play and there are a lot more people playing it now because it's free.

    Currently Playing: DAOC Uthgard

Previously Played: UO, DAOC, Shadowbane, AC2, SWG, Horizons, COX, WOW, EQ2, LOTRO, AOC, WAR, Vanguard, Rift, SWTOR, ESO, GW2.

You should definately try Lotro and/or Rift if you're looking for WoW-ish gameplay. Even the haters compare those games to WoW ;) You can get Rift really cheap these days and Lotro has been f2p for some time.

AoC doesnt really feel all that WoWish to me compared to the other games I mentioned, but hey it just recently launched a f2p experience so nuffin to lose really except time.

I loved Warhammer for the pvp (which is nuffin like WoW), but PvE (even with some cool twists to it like PQs) is just terribad. It's boring, the engine is crap and when I left dungeons were just full of bugs even after being out some 2 years. Oh well.

edit: missed the lotro part of OP for some reason. Just skip that then and go straight for Rift =)

    In this order

    Rift, Lotro, AOC.

Rift is very much like wow with a lick of paint and the bells and whistles stripped away, then some of the better Warthammer online features added in (PVE only)

Lotro is also very wowish.  AOC is very brown full of midriff and has a 3 button auto attack system other than that it to is wowish.

Guild wars is worth a play if you have 3 friends to go in with you and just play through the campaigns and enjoy the lore, its suprisingly well worked.

According to these forums, most games are 'wow-ish'. Unfortunately, it's used as a synonym for "not good". Catch 22.

well, you essentially shot down the two that I was going to suggest.

Though I find it difficult to believe that LOTRO's quests are too difficult. So I'm not clear on that point.

AoC as other have mentioned. You could try Gods and Heroes, I actually have a small soft spot for that game.

What, you think Aion is good, I thought most people don't like that?

You might want to give Alganon a go, free trial (up to level 30) however the population is non-existant. (bringing new meaning to the term "private server"

They are supposed to be launching a new comic book and expansion in the near future so perhaps that will bring more curious onlookers in.

I think this is more a case of bandwagon, especially in regards to later comments

Well considering that i have a hard time figuring out what you want as you call WoW overly simplistic but call LotR way to hard... Free Realms..? Any way Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is supposed to be a good game but the world is huge and the community is... at the best of times microscopic so you need to get in to a guild if you wasnt any social contact. Dungeons and Dragons Online  is a FtP game that is very solo friendly and give you good control of the dificult of the quests. Those would be my best bet for you to try and get in to.

This have been a good conversation

Aion is a good game and is growing in population everyday..It had a bad launch but NCsoft has really been improving it.

Only problem is the gankfest once you hit the 20's. It used to be getting ganked by higher level players..now its getting ganked by a mob of players your level. All in all can be a fun  game.

I can tell you right now though..nothing will fill the WoW void..Trying to compare other games to WoW will only lead to disapointment. I suggest finding one that grabs your attention and dont expect anything. Try to avoid F2p games , some are ok but in the long run youlll be paying out more than a sub.

Allods is a good game..the cash shop has improved some but still pretty bad in my OP.

Rift is a solid game with lots of polish no doubt , and it probably the closest thing to fill the WoW void. On a personal level though i find the game boring. caught myself dosing off to many times paying it.

So honestly by best advice is just stick with WoW for now ..till a worthy P2p title is released. which will be anytime now..lol!

If you want WoW with dynamic content - Rift

If you want WoW with a good story - LoTRO or AoC

If you want WoW with better graphics - AoC

If you want WoW with more involved combat - AoC

If you want WoW with more content - EQ2

If you want WoW with better art design - AoC or LoTRO

If you want WoW with angel wings - AION

If you want WoW with a lot of empty space - Vanguard

If you want WoW with lightsabers - wait for SWTOR

Although honestly, if you found LoTRO quests to be too hard, you'll probably find ALL these games to be too hard.

Ill just give you my list of what i feel are quality themepark mmos that will or should give you atleast two months of solid enjoyment.

Rift, Lotro, Aion, AoC, WAR, EQ2, Forsaken World, Allods, Runes of Magic

there ya go a mix of P2p and f2p all have decent questing, most of good dungeon design, good graphics and some type of pvp mechanic that distracts you from the endgame stuff.

    Enjoy mate.

    Playing: Nothing

    Looking forward to: Nothing

    Isn't 4story a WoW twin?

If I am correct in my assumptions that would be one for you to look at to play.

Thanks, I'll look them up. Maybe I've been a bit too harsh with Aion and should give it another chance.

I really don't get why everyone likes WoW, it's not even the same animal it used to be back in Vanilla WoW, not forgetting the time my account was hacked into, the PSN Network hack was nothing compared to this...

I play WoW and i dont consider myself ignorant , nor do i act like a kid.  Having such a biased opinion is ignorant. Not to mention the fact that , if you think WoW is the only mmorpg with a childish community your sadly mistaken.

To top it off you want to find a game like WoW thats not WoW..do i have to spell it out here, or can you figure it out?

I also had my account hacked 2 times , but i always got my stuff back. Getting hacked is your fault not blizzards..learn how to keep your system secure!

Can we get another bottle of HATERADE PLEASE ?..Oh im sure its coming!

I would say definitely try Rift.

I played WoW for a very long time it’s kind of sad, but for whatever reason I could never get into any other game.

However with Rift I really enjoyed my game time, though I admit I dropped it no problem after like 3 weeks, but that was just me. I burnt myself out and I didn’t game with anyone :

Guild Wars is a great option too, even though part 2 is coming out, it’s great to see the world, and get a feel for some of the game mechanics, though its lack of a persistent world scares plenty of players away.

I wouldnt touch AoC again if someone gave me a lifetime pass to that game.  Although the graphics quality is nice, sadly it's the most linear instanced game i've every played the world doesn't seem like a world if you get lost easy in other games all you have to do is follow the path (literally) and you'll see the whole game.  Was able to get to max level at release within a few weeks the combat system although new and unique gets tiring fast.

EQ2 is actually a really good game has tons of content is visually appealing if that's your thing and could easily consume you for years to come.

Vanguard has a seamless world tons of content you could level to max with five characters and never have to worry about hitting the same dungeon twice.  Literally has more content then 99% of current games.  The scenery is probably one of the best of any game on the market. Crafting system is probably one of the best out, can build houses, ships guild halls if your into crafting.  Diplomacy although highly misunderstood is probably one of the best things to hit an mmo in some time gives you something to do when you don't want to raid or just want to be left alone.  The bad but it's been getting better the low population and slow to release updates (but they have stated more updates are coming soon).

Rift is just lacking quick to max level and the so called dynamic content isn't really dynamic the game is lacking and could use another couple years to give you more to do.

Didnt care for Guild wars due to the the game world make up.

WoW although eye appealing the repetitiveness is downright atrocious. I played the game for many years raided, but the repitition with the end game turned me off for good from the game.  The gold spamming, hacking issues that go untouched really kill the fun I once had.
