With SWG gone, they don't have much to recommend them tbh and nothing in the pipe.

Everquest Next have a lot of potential if they make it right. EQ is one of the best MMOs ever so you shouldn't take it lightly even though it is very possible that they mess it up because they have few good programmers.

SOE might not be the top top MMO company but Blizzard have only a single MMO on it's list and Turbine have nothing. You can't predict the future on a list.

And frankly have SWG been on life support a long time, SOEs money is comming ibn from EQ 1 & 2 still, SWG havn't made that much since the NGE.

That's very true. I'm no hater, I'd love it if they released some good games but given their recent history, I have to remain sceptical until they prove they still have a good game left in them :)

Equally, I realise that SWG's problems have more to do with LA than they do with SOE.

I'm looking forward to The Agency! That game is gonna totally RAWK!!! Top secret spy MMO that SOE has been developing for years now.

That's exactly the development team that got laid off, in it's entirety. The Agency is axed. I thought it looked pretty fun too - but I suspect it was more or less a technology demo for the code going into Planetside 2, and that's probably why it got canned/reallocated.

You do realize that SOE had their mits on Vanguard from the day it released, right? In fact, SOE had their hands in it a full 9 months prior to the release, and 4 months after release just bought Sigil outright and took full ownership (in the same way they bought Verant outright in 2001, but still had a huge stake in development and management of EQ prior to that).

Anyway, with regard to the OP:

I am cautiously optimistic about PS2 and EQ:N. Planetside 1 was basically a test case for the technology going into SWG: it was the first SOE MMO to have huge maps without frequent zoning (that went on to SWG), and included the ranged/fps type combat that SWG had for a short while (until NGE). It was fun, and in a large persistent world with instant action made for a good casual playing game. It still makes a pretty compelling reason to get on the Station Pass/All Access Pass.

EQ:Next, however, is make or break. EQ is what SOE was founded on. It's their corner stone. Now I won't argue if SOE has done a good job with EQ lately: I don't agree with a lot of the changes the game has underwent throughout the years, but I concede that without many of those changes the game may not have survived it's long 12 year tenure that it currently has. I still play the original EQ from time to time, it really is a classic, even though I don't like a lot of the newer stuff. That being said, EQ:Next has the opportunity to be a huge success, if it can take what was so magical about that original EQ experience (although I admit a lot of the "magic" where the things that I absolutely hated about the game). But, as SOE's recent history has shown, it is more probable that it will just be another run-of-the-mill game with a possible console port that has a lot of potential, but spends too much time chasing market share from a board room prespective rather than focusing on it's strengths from a gamer's perspective.

If SOE can get back to it's gamer roots, it can hit a home run. If they sit back and listen to the boardroom suits and just throw marketing bullet points and industry buzzwords (which I'm afraid Smedley has just turned "Sandbox" into), it will be another unmitigated disaster.

nothing would surprise me more than SOE actually turning out a decent game.... EQ was one of the first MMO's i ever played.. back when Evercrack was responsible for.. well.. broken marriages etc..  but.. SOE isnt the same company it was then (and it was Verant that made Everquest anyway i think)  ... but SOE isnt in a good place right now.. Sony is in trouble, has been for years, with all the layoff's i don't really expect much of anything... Planetside Next will probably go the same way The Agency did..  and DCUO will probably limp on for another year maybe..  but i don't really see it..  SOE is too busy at the moment nickel and diming..  if that isnt a sign.. what is.. image

My old college buddys wife works at SOE. He called me after the 4th and his wife told him vanguards going to be sunsetted and sold for capital to fund the games they still have going. Could be bullshite but you never know. If vanguard get it's shutdown notice out in a month then she was telling the truth. I take every rumor though with a grain of salt TBH.

Wow - EQ1 was a trip and I loved it - We can only hope they release something that good. The problem is that games that require that kind of investment just aren't 'du jour' these days :(

Having one very good MMO game is better than having 10 mediocre and crappy MMO games, and Blizzard supposedly has another MMO game in the works.

Everyone has been predicting Vanguard to be the next victim, so this makes sense.

Yup, have to agree. Im sure VG will be next. It hasnt had even a small patch in over a year now.

That's a real shame as it had such potential. If they really are selling it, maybe someone with some vision will get a hold of it and turn it around.

There is still a decent market for a sandbox MMO and with the demise of SWG, VG would be perfectly positioned under the right management (AKA NOT SOE).

     I think you are forgeting : Planetside 2  and Everquest 3 .

I asure you most Sony fans are frothing for these two releases.

I hear EQ3 is a ps3 release, which means another POS from SOE.  Planetside might be decent, have to wait and see about that one.

This need to support the obsolecent PS3 will be SOE's downfall.

if DCUO had been any kind of success i'd be tempted to agree, but theres no sign that either EQ Next or Planetside Next are even still in development, they may be on hold, or cancelled,  rumours of a ps3 version too may well be exaggerated..image

and who did you hear this from? Because Smed nor Smokejumper have said it would be on the PS3. Why feed into rumor BS?

I will assume this entire post is a troll, as both were just talked about last night at the SoE Keynote. PS2 even had a trailer to go with it FFS.

I would like to see SOE develop a full fledged sci-fi MMO of their own original IP perhaps thats the "secret MMO" they are talking about perhaps?

Seeing that SOE just cancelled The Agency which already had 5 years work put into it, I don't think they have a secret mmo in the works.

I think the sandbox comment Smed has made is going to be in reference to planetside or eq3.  That is just speculation on my part and could be totally wrong.

The Smed said around the release of Free Realms that all future SOE MMOs would be released on consoles (meaning Sony ones) as well as PC.

The Agency had a lot going against it.  It was intended to be a free to play cash shop game, but the failure of Free Realms cause the original design to be scrapped in favor of a pay to play game.  Around the same time, the lead devs on the game left SOE to form their own company, and took most of the dev team with them.  On top of that, The Agency was going to be a FPS MMO, and the decision to make a new Planetside game would make The Agency redundant.

I took the Smed's sandbox comments to be typical the Smed BS, and I doubt SOE will release anything resembling a sandbox style game ine either the near or distant future.

I just recieved an update on Planetside 2 yesterday via Facebook. So, I would say that for now at least that game is still in the pipe.

Now, if they make PS 2 another so-called f2p pos with a P2W store, I won't be there no matter what the title.

Let's party like it is 1863!

You have any backup for that?

From interviews I've read with McQuaid himself I can honestly say that I've never heard him suggest any such thing.  SOE made a last minute deal to PUBLISH Vanguard but did not aquire its assets until May.

As a matter of fact, my entire guild, having come from SWG mostly, was very wary of SOE's presence even as "just" the publisher, but we decided to stay based on assurances, again directly made by McQuaid himself to the player base, that Sigil would retain complete creative control of the project.

It was only in May, then, that we decided to leave the game.

Sigil Games Online, Inc. was a computer game developer based in Carlsbad, California founded in January 2002 by Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler, key development team members who created EverQuest, the most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game before World of Warcraft.[1] McQuaid and Butler left Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), the publisher of EverQuest, and formed Sigil Games Online to develop "the next big thing".[2] McQuaid told the video game website IGN, "I find myself much happier at the results of assembling an all-star team of MMOG developers and focusing on making one ground-breaking, unprecedented project, as opposed to being spread thin like I was as VP/CCO at Verant/SOE.".[3] Sigil released their only game "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes" on January 30, 2007 after several well publicized delays[4] and a last minute switch from publishing with Microsoft[5] to publishing again with SOE.[6] On May 15, 2007, SOE announced that they had completed a transaction to purchase key assets of Sigil Games Online. As a result, SOE now owns Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, described as Sigil's "tent pole property".[7]
