Looks t me like you asked the same question almost exactly three years ago, but then you were waiting for Warhammer or Aion. Have you considered Age of Conan? It is now free to play, the graphics are good and I hear good things about the PvP.
They relaunched a new pvp server the free to play version and it's no holds barred... I can honestly say 75% of the people I cross are paid users using classes that would be locked if they were not so I think AoC will get a small boost of life by this free to play mode.

AoC is pretty close to dead, yes. You can see from the forums. Ques are very slow / non existant, even though it's now F2P. When you do get a pop for PvP it's alright, but nothing really noteable.
For PvP, It's basically Rift, Global Agenda (which feels more like a chat lobby for a shooter, but is still fun if you don't mind shooters / ever had fun playing Tribes), and occasionally GW1 has good pvp (when the pops aren't slow).
If you enjoy non-MMOs. Battlefield : Bad Company 2 is a ton of fun (also a shooter), as is Team Fortress 2.
Other than that there isn't much. Aika(sp?) had some decent world pvp for a f2p game for a while, but I think it's gone downhill as well.
Other than the above options, it's basically console gaming until SWToR / Battlefield 3 come out. If those aren't your thing, then it'll be a long felt wait for GW2 sadly =/.
Warhammer online is a decent PvP game to use as a filler, that's what i'm doing atm alongside playing AoC. Be warned though, you need to invest hefty amounts of time in AoC to be competitive. There is the new server but to be honest it's full of jackasses acting like 5 year olds, if playing there your best bet is to turn off global chat and you'll enjoy your time better.
Mate Try the new AOC server it is full of life any time of day at the moment i do hope it lasts, and the new Conan movie should help even more, A word of Warning though do not go to AOC and expect to be the best PVPer in the world straight away or you might get a shock.
You will most likely get owned for your first few weeks in the game but if you are any good at PVP you will pick it up.
i dont know what forums you read or where u heard AoC is dead but i been playing since the relaunch and the pop is massive...LOTS of ppl and lots of waction. To who ever says its dead obviously hasent played it l8tly...give it a shot frankly i say its a great game and wfor free u cant beat it...this game is a nice changed from WoW...but personally im going to be going to Darkfall when they relaunch it with a total server wipe(FTW)
Also may i recommend World of Tanks? Its a new awsome fshooter game...with the feeling of tanks the matches r massive and always well populated. One of this years best new style games IMO.

I've treid to play AOC 3 seperate times. Global is full of jackasses and You'll have a hard time leveling on a PvP server as their PvP ques are slow and most of their 80s are burnt out. You'll be followed around and ganked often. Yes its a PvP server but I've played Rift, WoW, DCUO and City of Heroes. I've NEVER seen so many of the high lvl population gank the lowbies.
The short of it, Not enough end game and a really crappy communtiy keep an awesome looking game from being fun. Looking forward to CoX going F2P.

Aoc is a Hardcore MMO its not easy its savage and so are allot of the players, on a hardcore PvP server you need to get some freinds. If i am lvling a lowbie and there is a 80 or even a group of 80s ganking me i would call my guild in and we would go to war some of those times are the most fun.

I just reactivated my Warhammer Online account a couple days ago just so I could actually RvR and it's actually very fun. I started over and the server I'm on is very populated and busy. I've heard it slows down in T2 and T3, but T1 and T4 are booming with players RvRing. So I would recommend giving the WAR free trial a go until something else comes along.

I reactivated WAR recently too and yes it is fun. T2 is dead, T3 is ok during peak times and T4 is where it's at. Unfortunately with the Renown Rank 80 - 100 gear being added recently combined with them now letting you earn double your renown level to your character level people don't want to do scenarios until T4 for fear that their RR will fall behind and they'll have to enter that tier in poor gear so they try to get as little normal XP as possible. Yes, what was actually considered great gear before the 80 - 100 addon is now considered crap.
I have a lot of fun in the game but i really wish they'd do something about the huge gap in gear.

Im having a hhuge burn right now with playing Age of wonder 2 Shdow Magic with 2 RL friends thnks to hamachi .
For those that dont know its similar to heroes of might mights the strategy rpg with the diference it has simultaneous turns. means we escape the boring part of waiting each other to finish his turn in orde rto play :P
