DC Universe Online: SOE Fan Faire 2011: Fight for the Light Overview

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

MMORPG.com's Drew Wood attended this year's SOE Fan Faire and learned a good deal about DC Universe Online's upcoming Fight for the Light DLC. Find out more about what the pack contains and be sure to share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

After Thursday night's opening address at this year's SOE Fan Faire, it was pretty evident that the teams behind some of these games weren't even close to done. The DC Universe Online team was no exception.  There's a new piece of content coming for the game, and while it's going to be taking a little bit of money out of your pocket to get it, it's going to give you a lot of stuff.

DC Universe Online: Fight for the Light is going to be adding Green Lantern content to the game, including the Light powerset. That's right, the paid update will be adding in a seventh powerset.  As a villain, fight with Fear as a Yellow Lantern, or, as a good guy, fight with your Will as a Green Lantern.  The download pack will bring in 24 new abilities for the power set, each side (yellow and green) having unique animations for them.

As a big Green Lantern junkie, I say awesome. But, I'm not convinced it'll be enough to get me back in. Especially considering it has an added cost for a few more instances. If they had gone ahead and added an entire Coast City to play in and level through, that'd be different.

I played CoX and Champions Online (only game where I could make the character I really wanted!)...I might try DCUO but I am not a fan of DC comics!

Anyway, on to more important issues on SOE's Fan Faire....what about EQ Next and EQ2 Beastlords?!!?!?!

I know they have to make money, but charging for something people don't really seem to want to play in the first place seems short-sighted. Especially since that lantern powerset is something people have been shouting for since the game was in development. It's an iconic power that people would have expected to have been part of the game right from the beginning. That it couldn't be is all fine and dandy, but to add it later and charge extra on top of the subscription is incredibly greedy.

I have no doubt that they intended on adding it, couldn't finish it on time, and then saw how much people wanted it and decided to tack on a price tag for the eventual release. SoE seems to be making all the wrong moves lately.

I find this utterly stupid too. The PC version is dead! The PC forums are dead!

And then releasing a content update people have to pay for! People that are not even there?

Totally baffles me.  Maybe fix all the issues first!, that made people quit in droves?

This is not going to bring people back!

Dude, it's a tiny expansion pack is what it is. New character classes usually don't just get 'released', they get added in expansions. That's what this is.

I still don't know what people mean by 'dead' on the PC. I'm on the "virtue and vice" server and see people every day putting together pick up raids and alerts nevermind the community of my own guild running stuff every night. Maybe they are referring to PvP or the villain side, which they certainly could be for all I know, I only PvE and play a hero.

Its certainly got more people than Vanguard and Fallen Earth running around, that's for sure.

As for this update having to be paid for its perfectly typical. CO and CoX have done this thing several times. Its not a full on expansion its just a 'middle ground' update. More content than a free game update, less than a full on expansion. From the sounds of it they plan on forgoing big expansions all together and just releasing series of paid DLC over shorter time periods while keeping current game updates free.

Dead means low population. DCUO is dead. I reactivated "Thanks SOE for 45 days free", and logged in friday at 7 PM. Every server was low population during primetime. I liked the game at release because it wasn't a typical WoW clone, and leveled to 30. After reactivating, I started an alt and found the experiece completely reptitive. After the excitement of the DCUO wears off the game is extremely shallow and it shows. Don't get me wrong its worth 1 play throught but doesn't have much staying power.

Are they still doing the monthly updates they promised at launch?

Just to clarify, in CO subscribers haven't had to pay for adventure content like Revelation, adventure packs and comic series.

With that being said, I don't find a problem with Sony for charging for this mini expansion. It is up to each subscriber to decide to get it or not.

About the health status of DCUO I can't say anything since I haven't played it since beta. It is a great game but not my favorite one.

    Laughable.

I really enjoyed DCUO. An action mmo was exactly what I needed after so many years of eq-style mmos. The population issues killed it for me. But as a huge Green Lantern fan, i think i can spare $10 to parade around as a lantern corp.

All I want to say is that,

As a DC fan, I want SOE to just sell the game to more capable hands and relaunch as B2P, since F2P MMO on PS3 seems like a joke for insane cash shop. Thanks SOE for ruining another franchise.

As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

So true. I wish DC would make wiser decisions with who they entrust to make their games/write their movies.

This was NOT a Fan Faire announcement.  This had to be a press release on Monday.  I attended both panels for DCUO and they both times hinted at this "secret" announcement but never revealed.  More info was to be saved for SDCC. Oh well.
