Summer of Savings Subscription Plans (Available July 2011)

This deal rivals the one they gave people at launch. Can things really be that good if they are doing this again?

Wait.. has this already been announced?

I'm losing track of which sale this is now. Disregard if this is an old previously announced sale.

    I can't keep track anymore.

People are beginning to discover that Rift has exactly zero depth.  You can rush to max level in 2 weeks then sit around and do nothing...or make an alt and do the exact same quests again for 2 more weeks.

What ever happened to games that couldn't be "beaten" in less than a month??

    /sigh

  • wesjrwesjr Member UncommonPosts: 506

To be honest, I have not touched the game since I hit 50,  I find the "raiding" to be boring, I hate the hurry up and wait game" that always seems to happen in raids.

We are know that the money is made in SUBS not box sales, so giving it for 50% is not a big deal if it brings in subs.

I just clicked the link - you're saving on the sub, like 70 cents to $1 a month, I hardly call that a savings imo  lol

I wonder how many would SUB for 1 year to any game now a days?

Not to mention you can be max level in 2 weeks with solo play.

I feel that is the problem with today's games, they are too solo friendly.

I totally agree...  It is something I complain about during every beta and launch I happen to take part in.  Why should I play a mediocre solo-centric mmo...when I can play a stellar console game that was designed specifically for single player?  AND pay monthly for it!

Anyhow, you are 100% right...games today are made for the masses of people that want to get in on the "MMO" genre....little do they know that they are simply paying a sub to play a 2-star single player game.

Are people still playing this game? Meh... I could not last past the first three days of the game when it went live. EB games still owe me $5.... if I can find my recipt.

People got tired of grinding and left for faster games :P

Ofc rift ways aint the aswer but the time of "leveling" should come to its end now. personaly I hope that games like The Secert World become highly succesfull , games that offer progress but whitout the level gind mechanics that have become the only focus of games. a game should never be about what your level is but what you can do in the game.

"The Grind" is something that WoW stole from asian games and brought to the North American industry.  The "Grind" is how a crap game disguises lack of worthwhile content.  I played EverQuest for 7 years and never once experienced "The Grind" because I had fun the entire time.  The grind only happens when the player is forced to undertake repetitive tasks that yield little to no rewards and provide no fun while they do them.  Which is why you see games with so much hype hit the market then sink like a stone after 6 months or so.  They were developed and released with just enough content to get players to the max level with no freedom, no choice, no fun.  MMOs today are just RPGs on rails.  You MUST do this, then you MUST do that...or you should just log off because there is nothing else in the game worth doing.

About 40 servers or so are now roped off and marked as 'trial' servers.

If you are in the game, you cannot transfer to those and if you are signing up a sub now, you cannot sub to them.

If you are on them now, Trion says you can stay but 'recommends' you leave. Anyone who's ever lived in a big city knows what that means when the city says that to a poor neighborhood... you're gonna get evicted soon so start looking around for new digs.

Conversely, people in game claim population is up but that's hotly contested now on the forums.

  • Frostbite05Frostbite05 Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,880

all the servers that are trial were ones that never got filled when the game launched. As of right now the majority of servers are medium/high and a few full with of course the exception of the trial servers. As of right now the game is most likely sitting at 500k subs which is outstanding considering. Further development and an expansion would greatly boost these numbers but with SWTOR and GW2 that might be hard

I think that this is pretty clever marketing from Trion. Steam's extremely popular Summer Sales just ended and if Trion manages to lure even a fraction of all those people who bought something from Steam's sale just because it was cheap they will make decent money with this campaign of theirs. After all, they are selling a product that is not likely moving as quickly as it did just after the release and hence there has to be some other incentives for people to purchase it.

Brilliant move by Trion. Rift was actually on the top 3 at one point which is just insane considering the number of games people were buying during this sale.

One thing everyone should remember is that

    A. It cost Trion nothing since it is all digital

    B. Steam only takes a cut if there is a sale.

Yep, in fact so well that they will eventually decide to give the game away and just let you pay subs instead :P

before rift fanboi rages, I was just joking. Maybe I will sub for another 3 months after this month's content update.

    Hmm.

I feel like putting things in perspective image

Let's talk figures, Rift takes an average of 125-150 hours to reach level cap, other MMO's like WoW, LotrO, AoC took an average 175 to 250 hours to reach level cap.

If you reach level cap in Rift in 2 weeks, then you can say that you'll reach level cap in those other MMO's I mentioned within a month as well, that is, if you spend 60-70 hours playing an MMORPG, what people saying Rift level cap is reached in 2 weeks are saying. So, people who think that leveling goes too fast in Rift, I wonder how they regard those other MMO's where reaching level cap takes longer but not that much longer.

Also, we're talking 'content consumption' here, dev provided content.

I'm looking forward to TSW, but I have no illusion that its dev provided content (besides the Investigations) will be hundreds and hundreds of hours more than a Rift of an AoC. The nature of questing content remains the same, no matter if an MMORPG has levels or not.

As for EQ, I liked it a lot, but I know that there were enough people who complained about the 'level grind' and we always talked about 'mob grinding' and 'going to grind some mobs'. There's no denying the repetitive nature of EQ's mob grind leveling.

Grinding is however more of a state of mind: if you consider a repetitive action to be boring and tedious, then it's a grind for you, if you feel it's interesting and entertaining still, then it's not a grin. For you, because the same activity might be a grind to someone else though.

I remember the good ole days of UO.....i never got tired of that game..always something to do...same way with SWG...now once you hit level cap in an MMO you can do 2 things.... run around and do nothing or grind an alt...absolutly no content

I can max level a mage in wow in a week and I'm talking literally a week not in /played time. Blizzard dumbed the game down way too much in the end, as for cross server dungeon group finder that made it even easier if you want to grind dungeons all day. I do hope that trion don't add cross server to this game.

Rift took me 52 hours to get to level 50 with my first char. I want the days back, when level meant something, when you are not always in a hurry because a hour was the biggest imaginable time frame for "the next step".

Yes, there was a lot more mob grinding (MOB grinding in groups, not solo quest grinding!) in EQ. But that was fun and enjoyable. Nowadays the creation and evolution of a char is just a small tutorial for the so-called endgame. Can't wait for a game that is worth a three month subscription - long time not seen...

They already pretty much said they would back in February when they spoke of plans to bring in the LFG tool.

At least that's what I read that as far back as February, these things were pretty much a done deal. It was just a matter of time until they got it finished to launch them.

I hope you're not one of those people who say "if they put in cross servers, I'm quitting rawr!" because it's a very good bet they are, and if you like a game it's dumb to quit just because one feature you don't have to use if you don't want is added.

Well GW2, you are going to be group grinding events :P The problem I feel with today's quest structure is that, you don't actually learn anything from the quest, it is simply an act of progressing and progrssing. I would like quest lead to a instance where quests hints at you on how to progress through the instance, otherwise, it will be very difficult to complete.

Interesting, because according to this thread most people took at least 120+ hours to reach level cap, and a number of them weren't exactly slacking. So unless you found a huge speed leveling bug or trick, I think I'm going to stick to what those other people were reporting, which was that 50 hours brought you nowhere near to L50 image

In TSW you'll get hints throughout your progression in a quest or 'dungeon', things you need to learn that you'll need to remember or be wary of later on.

The examples they gave were that of pods that exploded when you came near, or mobs that used electricity skills to electrify parts of the environment like the water or metal, so afterwards when you'd need mobs that did this you'd need to be wary of where you stood and fought.

Another example was a flock of ravens that flew off in a certain direction. If you followed them, they'd get scared off by you several times until after you kept following them they'd lead you to a Revenant. The devs said that this would teach players that whenever next people would notice ravens that flew away, that this might be a sign that something was off, and that it could pay off to pay attention into what direction they flew and follow them.

During Prelaunch there was a bug that allowed to get to max level within two days. Neither me nor my leveling group abused that bug, we just did the quests (ok, we knew all the quests and spots from alpha, so that maybe gave us an "advantage"). My whole group reached 50 before the official launch without even trying to be the fastest... Anyway, I still believe that you can get to the max level in under fifty hours played.

Edit: just googled it, first level 50 was under 25 hours: http://forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?94468-Abomos-and-Erhoben-world-first-level-50s-on-US-Spitescar&__utma=1.1119213578.1297988403.1310337725.1310643309.68&__utmb=1.4.10.1310643309&__utmc=1&__utmx=-&__utmz=1.1310643309.68.14.utmcsr%3Dgoogle|utmccn%3D%28organic%29|utmcmd%3Dorganic|utmctr%3Drift%2520first%252050&__utmv=-&__utmk=46405415

Regarding GW2: I'm not so sure if a better scripted solo-quest engine will be the revolution of the genre. I still see no point for grouping in gw2 - but we will see when it is ready, if it will be the first game to live up the hype.

Hey... Who would have thought that people disliked being nerfed from multiple angles?

I mean the nerfing of classes, destruction of pve progression on multiple fronts...

I mean isnt grinding mindlessly easy content hundreds of times fun?

Im not surprised that this is happening to RIFT.

    Looking forward to: Nothing

My theory is that the modern mmo industry trend is for a high initial population followed by a noticably lower retention rate. I believe this is due to the abundance of choice in the mmo market.

I think this heavy campaigning is an attempt to address this trend. They are simply trying to make the game very accessible, because in theory, you have to reach a much wider audience to create a larger and larger population.

If 3 million try it and 1 million stay then if you can get 9 million to try it, you can keep 3 million of them - for this to happen you must have a relentless campaign to get people in the game.

    That's my theory anyway.

Mass market saturation. That could be a possible theory.

    Thanks for that.
