of a show of hands who has watched the SOE Fan Faire Stream from Game Breaker/ Justin tv. ?
....
alright, couple things i want to bring to the table, and, perhaps speculate, without anyone having their eyeballs melt or their kidneys explode in either joy or rage.
so HERE WE GO
1. SANDBOX and RESOURCE ELEMENTS
a. Resources have been mentioned, gathering of resources of territories can give benefits to your empire, NAMELY your outfit which goes straight towards (b)
b. Resources could go so far as building equipment, or your own Structures (buildings!?!?) for your outfit. so just to say it again
straight from the guys mouth, Structures for you own outfit.
c. making equipment to customize items for your weapons, not to the extent of making or own weapon, but to the extent of tweaking the weapon to your liking.
2. TERRITORIES
a. First planetside is about grabbing one base, sitting on it and going to the next, PS2 wants to promote grabbing not only bases but LAND as well, every Acre of land is important, if Resource gathering is involved, then Holding on to land can play a important role for outdoors combat
3. CLASSES AND LEVELS
a. PS2 will have majority of all familar roles of the game, infantry, medic, engineer, pilot etc etc. but will place classes with in those roles and make them more in depth. Does this mean Classes as in (your a soldier so all your certs will go into that i.e. no hybrid cert specs?) it is unknown at this time, but it goes into the next part (b)
b. EVE STYLE LEVELING (yes he said it), level up skills offline, which could lead towards a player being skilled in multiple roles and not pigeon holed to just a particular class
What are your guys thoughts on this, let alone those who have watched the stream, what are your thoughts or concerns of what he has spoke of.
my take on it, in strangest case scenario, darkfall with lasers, tanks and airplanes, not a fair mix up, but hell if the scale remains, bring it on.
Comments
that sandbox resource elements and and customisation all sounds amazing.
but im concerned about the classes, no classes is what made PS unique, every game has classes these and its impossible to balance. leave them out and let people build their own class and playstyle again. i would think planetside was fine at BR20 -23 after that there is just to many cert points. this maybe still ok if you can change classes at a terminal, but a huge no no if you do it at creation.
offline leveling is another concerning thing, we have no real idea how it works, but planetside has always been a game about skill. the idea of character always been more powerful because they have payed for longer is concerning.

TRF - GM - GW2, PS2, WAR, AION, Rift, WoW, WOT....etc...
Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.
It all sounds great but it also sound like ideas are being thrown around that do not quite match up to a coherent game play style yet.
As we know the engine might be nearly ready but the actual game itself is far from ready.
I doubt we will be seeing things like offline skilling in the finished product - it is just something that sounds good to get people interested and "pimped" to use an Americanism about the game.
Smedley is full of pimping.
Eve style skills and class system sound very, very fail. That is something the original game (br20 times) did amazeingly well.
This game is that one hope i have had, through all the MMOs i have played since and got bored with, and it sounds like its gonna be another botched SOE game. Sad really.
Did the original have different servers? I would love to have one server only, like Eve.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
I think SOE have had the many resently upset Eve and ex-Eve players and thought they could take over that part of the market.
Maybe they can, Eve is getting old. But it doesn't sound to me that they plan to go up against the bigger games with this one, and maybe thta is the right thing to do.
The market for sandbox games are pretty open right now, Eve still have 90% of it.
One of the greatest parts of planetside was you can build your own class, and pretty much rebuild it whenever you felt like (with reasonable limitation) and that a brand new player could go up against an old player, and assuming they engage them properly, be on near equal footing. This whole skill training thing and specialization paths sound like an older player will be better at something then a new player. I dont like the idea someone beat me because they have more free time, not because they were better.
Just some information on skills and advancement that some may find useful:
"There’s also a new skill certification tree. “It uses an offline time-based learning method – if you’re familiar with Eve Online, how they unlock skills, it’s similar to that.” Each skill is locked to a battle-rank though – a player can’t progress past a certain point unless they actually play. “It allows players with not much time to game to keep up with friends who have nothing but free time, and it allows us to have bonuses for players who are actively playing.”
The skills tree is extensive, to say the least – Higby mentions thousands of skills. “Every vehicle will have its own skill tree, every weapon will have its own skill tree. You’ll be able to completely customise your soldier to the exact playstyle you want”. Squad leaders will retain their separate advancement tree, allowing them to command larger groups, whilst outfits will both be able to specialise further and customise their appearance. Higby envisages a purpose-built outfit for air cavalry with customised reapers and bonuses to air combat, or armour outfits so that “if you see these guys coming over a hill in customised prowlers, you’ll know who they are.”
To make ad-hoc combat easier, there’s a new customisation addition; a class system, replacing the pseudo-classes of the original. You can seamlessly switch between classes that you’ve unlocked; so you can can play as a medic or engineer, or switch to maxes and heavy assaults, depending on what your squad needs. It seems to be a way of creating a soldier that fits the individual’s play style but still feels useful and recognisable in the battle. “The FPS elements we’ve taken are for faster paced combat; we like the Battlefield games.”

^This.
Battle Rank 12 and you could get Medium Assault, Heavy Assault, Reinforced Exo Suit, Medical, and Engineering (repair). Everything you need to be a viable soldier, the rest was down to your own skill.
I don't want them to change this by powering up top end players, it's what sets Planetside apart from MMORPGs.
Regardless of how it turns out though, I really hope this game is a massive success. It could be just the shake up that the MMO genre needs.
Had several servers at the start. Couldnt imagine the servers being able to take that kind of load. The battles were already 300+ people at some points, my poor 56k line would be extra raped with one server
Uhh... what?
I agree with most of what you said except the last sentence.
The great thing about Eve's offline levelling is that it didnt require free time to skill up. Skills are also capped and there are only so many skills you can apply to the specific ship that you are flying at the moment. So a new player could easily skill himself up to a veteran players skill and successfully pilot a frigate and even a battlecruiser in PvP. Although I know in writing it doesnt seem this way, and you can see this by the countless threads by newbies or people who try to shoot holes in Eve's offline levelling without experiencing it, this is how it works in Eve.
anyway, since I cant compare planetside 2 to eve in any shape or form because..well we just dont know anything about the game, I'll just say that offline leveling should actually benefit a new player if done properly by capping certain skills, making sets of skills relate to specific classes and making these obtainable in a reasonable amount of time. if they make skills too broad, less specialized with a very high cap or no cap at all... then they're going to have a very newbie unfriendly game.
So far PS2 sounds great, just hope SOE don't fuck it up like they normally do. Not mad about the offline leveling if its going to be like EvE and take days or weeks to get a skill tho.
Most of what I've heard about PS2 sounds pretty exciting but we still need a lot more details and the implementation is always much more important than the concept.
There are two things which I'm really not happy with: the whole RPG-ish class system crap and the time-based leveling.
Overall, it is still the game that has the most potential for my taste.
