Advice on a new MMORPG

maxjammaxjam Member UncommonPosts: 44

Hi there!

I have been playing MMORPG for the last 2 years and am looking for some advice on starting another.

During the last 2 years I have spent 90% of my time on Star Wars Galaxies - I love the game, but after 2 years I am looking for a new challenge.

I have recently played Matrix Online, Everquest 2, Planetside, CoH, Guild Wars and WoW but not really been impressed by any of them and before I spend any more money am looking for some good advice!

I have worked out that I do not really enjoy d&d fantasy type affairs and I do not enjoy the constant repetative questing most of the MMORPGs I have tried offer.

I think I enjoyed SWG because it the leveling grind was relatively easy and quick enabling me to have fun roleplaying my chosen professions. I also enjoyed the freedom from questing and being able to go hunting with my mates, chill out in a cantina or go fishing etc. Being able to display my aquired loot in a house was good also (and a house that other people could actually see/visit - not the 'room' you get in EQ2)

Anyway, I would appreciate feedback from anyone that can recommend a new game for me to try out.

Thanks!

Eve online offers complete freedom to do what you want, even corp theft and scamming people!

Also heavily force PVP and a great economy!

Think if you havn't tried it then it could be for you :) Also it has no grinding! Instead all you spend your time doing is making money!

yeah I have thought about EVE, but what is there to do in the game other than get richer and buy more powerful ships etc. Admittedly I would enjoy the combat/mining side of things - but I also like my games to have a relaxation and fun side to them (such as the fishing competitions or cantina nights of SWG)

Well you'll have to get into a corp otherwise soloing in space will be very lonely :)

some stuff to do in eve:

    • Amazing character creation, can take you hours :)
    • Amazing music that adds to the atmosphere
    • Amazing style and look
    • Expansions are free :)
    • Patches are only like 5mb max! The games a small download www.eve-online.com
    • The community is mature and www.eve-radio.com is just amazing to tune in and talk on the chat :)  Specially on tuesday nights
    • Corp wars
    • Scamming and theft, being a pirate!
    • Being good and stopping these pirates
    • Soo much freedom!
    • Missions
    • Minning
    • hunting npc
    • PVP a big part!
    • Trade routes

    etc etc etc

Theres alot to do in eve :) my couple of years were fun! Left because it rejects my card lol!

You can also try out Saga of Ryzom (www.ryzom.com). It is not d&d/tolkien type fantasy world but own fantasy/scifi mixture. SoR is not based on quest driven storyline familiar from eq2,wow or gw etc. SoR storylines are event driven.

Best aspects of SoR are graphics, exploration, classless skill system, customizable actions, friendly community, refreshing world setting & ecosystem. You can grind lot of levels if you like (max lvl 250 in all skll trees), but you don't have to advance to max level to enjoy the game. Game is generally RP friendly with some RP guilds and lots of RP events.

Both Eve and SoR have free trial, better to test out both.

EDIT: forgot that foraging and crafting are great in SoR

SoR isn't ready yet, maybe in a few years

Ok thanks for that - a definate possibility.

I'm looking for all of that as well as player cities/housing for a greater sense of community and somewhere to display my ill-gotten gains!

Eve... i didn't think a game could bore me that much, freelancer (non MMORPG) Is much better and not pay per month

You will not find ANYTHING better than Galaxies in terms of freedom or of a variety of things to do, its sad i know.

A good second is DAoC but that has not got as much freedom as Galaxies.
