MMO is an acronym I feel can be placed on a lot of other game types too, not just the FPS genre. While an MMOFPS might be able to rival the MMORPG right NOW in terms of popularity (and possibly trump it in many ways) I think we'll soon see such intermingling of so many different systems that the first company to get it right could be the next world of warcraft.
It won't be just an MMOFPS, or just an MMORPG, but it will have to meld a lot of other aspects in, from action titles, to more social titles. If you hybridize the best features of each, I think we'd have a chance here to have a colossal success.
As for what SaintViktor said, Not all other MMO other than Wow was a complete failure, some had very good ideas but were poorly executed, but also, almost all MMOs out atm and in the past subscriber bases still dont come close to what Wow has atm, and why, is it the best game ever? Arguably thats the individuals opinion, does Blizzard know how to market to the masses and gain unpresidented fan bases, absolutely. I would love to see an MMOFPS that rivals the quality that Blizzard puts into their games, and i do think that they can rival MMORPGs, many people love customizing their Avatars and different things about their characters and progressing with them, but they dont like the feel or playing style of current and older MMOs with the static rotations and raiding mechanics. As for people who love playing Wow, they have good reason to, it is a quality game but really dont stand out to much to advancing the genre anymore to the future as it now stands, the only reason the other MMOs that have came out after it is compaired to it is without a doubt it has set the bar for polish and quality in a online game, many would argue that it has ruined the genre, but in its defense, a good majority of gamers, casual or hardcore, (putting people in these catagories is imo stupid to begin with) wouldnt even know what an MMO is or infact would never have even played one if it had not been for Blizzard and World of Warcraft.
Applications for MMO guilds??? Sorry not that pathetic just yet
There's a little problem: mostly (i relly don't know all of tem) of the so called MMOFPS games aren't in First Person but 3th person shooters. I think that we first need a new name for this genre, then we can talk about them, MMORPG and, if you like, the best genre ever: MMODOB (Mostly Multiplayers and Online Drink Often Beers). Or, if you prefear: GTSPISYG (Go To Play So I (have) Sex (with) Your Girlfriend)
But, really, they mostly aren't FPS.
Bye from a Global Agenda (till B2P period) very casual player with so few time that... sigh
Short answer: the MMOFPS can indeed rival the MMORPG, but not in Sony's hands.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
MMOFPS is certainly a valid playtype. The problem that I see is that many recent games have tried to merge the two.. providing "twitch" skills in a traditional MMORPG... and for me personally it has pretty much been failure after failure.
So I hope that the MMOFPS genre grows on it's own... and PS2 is a success and spawns other true MMOFPS games... and allows MMORPGs to go back towhat they do best.
Well, that's my thought. I just don't understand how it can be successful on a large scale (as opposed to ushering people into maps) when distance, lag, sketchy connections, amazing connections, etc play such a huge part in it.
Heck, I remember when I had two accounts in Lineage 2 and when I brought up both windows I was shocked to see that on one screen my second character was in front of me and on the second screen it was at the side of me.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

BANG ON. It is a good argument, but it is a bad idea to use a future and untested SOE game as the champion of your argument, as they are the company best known for continually screwing the proverbial golden goose.

Until the MMOFPS genre is capable of providing fluid combat, e.g., Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty, it will never rival basic MMOs.

You don't necessarily have to be holding a rifle for it to be a first person shooter. I was at the dinner table explaining to my sister's boyfriend how I developed missions for VO, which I think he mistook for Eve. As I tried to explain the difference I used the term "kind of like Quake in space" as vets often do, when my brother chimed in "nah it's more like Call of Duty in space". I looked at him, he was right.
You gain experience points, you rise up and fall in factions, you earn credits and you mine and participate in crafting. Everything except for the mining and crafting are more like Call of Duty than Quake. You don't have to be standing on a planet or playing a humanoid avatar, it is first person due to the fact that your vision is couched at the locus of your essence, looking outward. The weapons are what you gain intimiate knowledge of, their feel, shape, look, and performance. Your attitude determines what comes into the foreground of your awareness. Look, there is a target, shoot at it.
I've spent 38 days, 5 hours, 4 minutes, and 5 seconds jacked in to that galaxy, and probably twice that long metagaming... still my own online exploits pale in comparison to others. Like Kotaku called it; "a deep game."

Question: Does Sony Online Entertainment already implemented all their promises they are stating as a playable feature?
Why do I ask this? EVERYTHING that is promised by a dev team is questionnable until proved otherwised with playable demos/betas. We all know how it works - promises can't be compared to reality. MMORPG genre is the best example about it, even some FPS games fail, and there's some middle-ground games like APB that failed too.
Even Guild Wars 2 has everything implemented in gameplay when they talk about it, showing it in demos and gameplay footage since the beguinning and some people still doubt about it.
It is very easy to compete with the mmorpg because there has been pretty much complete failure besides WoW.
Uhh.. Well then, I think you have found the one single line that, without directly saying so, points out that you are hardly a gamer, that you are first time on the internet, and that you are actually mentally retarded.
Congratulations, I don't think anyone will ever top you on that. You should put it in a signature and troll around other forums some more just to spread your amazing discovery.
Anyway, I think we can use more combat mechanisms found in FPSs in MMORPGs. With the aiming, the first person view and the potential and adrenaline rush of sudden victory or defeat.
Rather than clicking and having your character run to that monster and start swinging at it, then waiting until it is dead, and repeating... You would more so feel yourself running in that forest, hear the monsters, see them and start blasting and hope that it doesnt run you over or your bullets run out before its down.
I also rather games where you click to swing your weapon, or press a button to do it, so you can actually be more part of it as a gamer. I don't care about repetitive strain injury, I grew immunity. Not just watch your character moving and killing on a macro or with just a few clicks. That gets stupidly boring.
Well lets see Lotro, Mortal Online, Darkfall, Age Of Conan, Warhammer Online, Aion, Fallen Earth, DCUO, Champions Online, Star Trek Online and Earthrise were all big successes in the mmo industry. Sorry my mistake!
I honestly believe that there are more FPS gamers than RPG gamers in the world, and if done correctly the MMOFPS's of the world might actually shine through some day. The problem at the moment is that the current slew of MMOFPS that exist, of which I'm fairly ignorant, haven't done much to let players know they're around. For example, I play tons, and tons of games. It's almost sad how many games I play. Factor that into the amount of time I spend on the internet, and you've got a pretty unhealthy chunk of time every day that I'm being advertised to, whether or not I'm aware, and the only MMOFPS's that I can think of are Planetside (and it's successor), WW2Online (which is shit), Global Agenda, and Huxley (which I heard might have been bought by another company). So, what I'm getting at here is that they've done a terrible job making themselves known, and this article alone was exposure to a few things I wasn't aware of.
Anyway, I think the MMOFPS actualy could be far more dominant than the MMORPG, but they actually have to make a game that functions (and I mean technically) without the kind of issues that prevent FPS gaming from becoming a detriment, i.e. frame count, latency issues, and hit detection just to name a few. On top of that, they need to advertise the shit out of it. Global Agenda was a good start, but there's still much more that needs to be done to create whole worlds that can be explored and shot up in an FPS environment. Borderlands is a good example of a game that probably should be an MMO, because they've nailed most of the key features (aside from online play, I'm ignorant to that as well).
"This is life! We suffer and slave and expire. That's it!" -Bernard Black (Dylan Moran)
I am so far not impressed by MMOFPS, but there is always the possibility that they eventually might be more popular and better than the MMORPGs.
After all are FPS games more popular than RPG games.
But for that to happen need the MMOFPS find it's own mechanics and gameplay in a way current MMOFPS games havn't. Just taking a FPS game and put it into a persistant world or take a MMORPG and add twitched based combat isn't enough, not by a longshot.
If someone that are experts on FPS game rethinks the model it can be huge, someone like Valve for an instance.
I could see a game like Natural selection become a MMOFPS that would outclass many MMOsthe ideas behind NS would particularly well fit a persistant world.
It's the MMO "Things" user assets, such as housing and specific crafting, decorating, "Control" that draw me to MMO's. Even though God created the world with a big boom, I have to live in it, and I'm gonna play by my rules until I move on. God doesn't have to listen to the players, and he/she doesn't have to show their face. But it's in the best interest of God that they do.
Sure MMOFPS's can make it if they're done well enough, I usually play whatever character/s have a bow (a Ranger), so it's basicly, always a shooter to me, just a different gun. Shooting fireballs is the same as shooting a gun. The flachette round is basicly the same thing as using a 1000 dagger spell at something. The real attraction to MMO's for me is everything else, the houses, the toys, the decoration, the fluff. Weapons are just tools of the trade, gear... well gear can be decorative, so it's kinda a fluff.....
Just don't forget to add the MMO part to it, and not just the massivley multi player online part.
Planetside 2, I dunno. I really need a reason to be fighting other than "Hey sarge, that took some balls to do" or "It's cost me $10 in ammo to kill that thing" ". I need the housing, I need to decorate the hosuing, I need to collect and display, and trade and craft. Upgrading weps will work, but can I display it in my own home, on my own land where there's storage and a place to fish and relax in a world I want to live in.
Don't get me wrong, sometimes I just gotta blow shit up, and beat it to a bloody pulp, but it doesn't usually last that long and I head over to a world that has things in it where I feel I am an actual part of the world with all the fluff.
If yer in it just for the money, yeah it'll get by and make money. But for the real deal, go MMORPGFPS.
Sure would like to see a Western (Wild west) panning for gold and mining, trains, horses, farms, skinning bear for hides to make clothes and rugs, using deer antlers to make furniture to put in my house that's on my farm that's on my land, breeding my own fish and raising my own hunting animals and pets and all that MMORPGFPS
There are some games that are close, but it just ain't cutting it anymore. Whether it be they can't wait for people to hear about the game or they simply aren't intersted in it, I dunno, still looking for a way to make it happen.
There has been a good MMOFPS on the market for 3 years now, and this game really requires player skill (not just the usual paper/stat skill of usual MMORPG). In faxt its too tough for most, as well as being kinda cruel to the newcomer, if he isnt already used to non-consensual PvP games (which are very few indeed). Warning: Its NOT a game for the WoW generation.
if you want MMOFPS with magic, try Darkfall. Its UO and CS and some others mixed for good measure.
Ok, I think the faultline is going to be between persistant FPS ala FPS-MMO or a persistant world with fast-paced combat ala MMO-FPS.
DUST 514 & PS are FPS games first with an MMO element, they will thrive financially but I believe will mostly lack the depth to do anything but "shoot shit".
The big winner (I believe) will be when an MMO is able to include fast-paced action with similar reaction/twitch requirements as FPSs and does it with the polish of WoW. This will require extensive story-driven content but less of an RPG feel.
Atm, a fantasy MMO is driven by DnD idealogy and requires the caster to wear a dress onto the battlefield. My money is on a low-fantasy quick-combat MMO being the new-WoW.
IF there was a dev team smart enough to make one,and IF said dev team actually had talent in game design, instead of simply being a bunch of programmers given titles proclaiming them designers,a mmofps with a zombie survival based theme would blow away almost all of the mmos we are plaqued with in todays market.
Housing ?Heck yes !Customizable safehouses ,in which the player can add and task rooms.Housing that gets attacked on occasion, and takes damage,AND has to defended and reppaired.
Crafting ?Again, heck yes!.Its pretty much mandatory in such a setting.
Professions,skills,and skill based advancement ?Yup.
Vehicles and various travel methods? Again pretty much required.
NPC hencemen ?Again, its zombie survival...and there has to be some stranglers out there who need a place to live and protection such a place affords.
NPC interactions ?Of course, and of course even among themselves.
Foraging ?Forget the standard sillyness of mmo foraging, leave it far behind.Think fort zombie,WotLD,Zombie Pandemic, etc,, foraging instead.Search entire buildings and their components,vehicles,etc...
No, other than the lack of intelligence and skill of the current dev teams, theres NO reason why we dont already have a mmofps that overwhelmingly blows away the current crop of crap mmos.
SOE need to ADVERTISE THE DAMM GAME...and then maybe it will compete with many of the MMORPGS out there. I mean really advertise it...Television (cable, dish network etc). "hello i'm Verne Troyer, and i'm a Vanu unimax user" style adverts (well maybe not that one but empire specific tv ad/mini movies would rock) would bring a huge influx of players which at the end of the day is what a persistant MMO really needs.
There is NO such thing as an MMOFPS nowadays really. beyond WWIIOL. everythign is just lobbies. Also it will NEVER be at it height like back in the day, where games like Endless Ages, NEocron, WWIIOL, PLanetside, FOM, all existed within the same damn time.
Im 100% as cool as planetside 2 sound the average person doenst want to F*** with anything made by SOE for the time being. Considering they are hte PC eqivalent of infinity ward. So the days of REAL MMOFPS is long over. forget about it, its a wrap
I have not tryd the good mmofps like ps1 and wwo(atleast i have heard alot of good about em here).
Other mmofps/mmo3rdperson have been very lackluster. You can not make a lobby game and charge 15$ for it, as i get superior lobby games for the b2p price.
If they cant host more than 64vs64 they might as well give up, dont matter if they have 10000 people on 1 server if only 10vs10 play against each other. If so im better off with css or bc2. There i have 5000+servers all from 1v1-32vs32 the latter one is much more fun in every aspect
Persistant world for me as a fps player aint a hugh deal(after playing apb that had persisten lobby world), but bringing 200+ to a big battlefield would sure peak my interest, after that it is how they handle recoil/hitbox/lag to make me stay or not.
Until developers start to understand that basic, mmofps wont happen. But as said numbers are just the basic, i have playd a crap load of fps i dont like and maybe 5 i realy realy like.
I think they can take the mmo world by storm if done well, but there is a bigger risk as they enter the b2p arena. Becouse of this they need quality game that i guess wont be super popular on release, i would assume the 1st company to try to change fps over to mmofps will loose money the 1st year until word of mouth carry the fps players over even if it is a great game.
Mmorpg had a big advantage, most rpg games are single player. Some had lacking multiplayer. But to realy play rpgs online your only option was mmorpg. Diablo2 was among the few that had good multiplayer, i havent playd any other rpg that had good multiplayer but i guess there are some that slipd pass me over the year.
A more interesting article would be how MMORPGs are all slowly but consistently becoming MMOFPS games. The NWO of MMOs is much closer to quake than it is to Meridian, UO or any mud I every played. Money grubbing trash, all of it.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
The reason the MMOFPS has come to rival the MMORPG is the lines separating the two blurring as overlap begins to take. For example TERA is a MMOFPS with some fantasy RPG elements thrown in. Same thing can be said about Darkfall. On the other side there are games like Vindictus which is MMORPG with some FPS options. This hybrid gaming is likely the real future of the industry here.
I would have rather seen an increase in MMOFPS games than these MOBA's.. Maybe one of these FPS games should throw a big streamed tournament online so it will get these aspiring professional gamers would take notice ,jump right in and get other companies to notice..
My vote goes to Team Fortress 2.. We need more "class" based team combat.. There is also a game on steam called Monday Night Combat which is ripe for competition..
This is PS2... infering the was one before it.
Team Fortress is a childs game... just like BF heroes online (wich plays out of your browser). PlanetSide was a great game, but it had some flaws and had no marketing. PS2 will be great, because more than 100k will play and it will be busy all the time... thus drawing in more combatants.
As for tourney..? Tribes, Counter Strike, etc.. all were platforms for major touneys. PS2 is an ONLINE FPS game and the tourney is the game... are you better in a persistant world, than the other people.
As for outright FPS play and tounreyments..? Expect BF3 to steal the cake on tourney circuit.
lol... did u say team fortress..? (<-- little kids don't have the funds to travel the world going to tourneys)
"No they are not charity. That is where the whales come in. (I play for free. Whales pays.) Devs get a business. That is how it works."
Give me twitch based combat all day, even though I'll sometimes struggle with it, at least at first. Do not give me team play centered around guilds. That's all Earthrise is, and I suspect that's all MMOFPS devs can currently conceive of. Team pvp with its roots in the standard gear grind plus MMO politics, all adrift in a shallow, boring game world where everything everyone does leads back to combat. However, I could be suddenly in the minority as far as gamers go. Maybe I haven't noticed and more and mroe gamers are becoming social players, reversing the trend over the past few years. If this is the case, doubtless the communities, however unappealing to me, will provide some of the missing depth for a different type of player. If not, then these games will become empty sandboxes and sad disappointments, as well as money sinks for the developers and for those foolish enough to purchase them without doing their research first.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

An MMOFPS type targeting system should be in every new MMORPG or as this industry will find out the MMOFPS will become the true new gen MMORPG..
The whole roleplaying premise combined with an FPS style combat system is just way superior to the traditional classic mmo combat system..
And should be the future of the genre when implemented correctly..

if you want MMOFPS with magic, try Darkfall.
THIS! SOMEBODY SEND THIS TO EVERY DEVELOPER EVER! I COMMAND YOU, DO IT! Plox?
There is NO such thing as an MMOFPS nowadays really. beyond WWIIOL. everythign is just lobbies. Also it will NEVER be at it height like back in the day, where games like Endless Ages, NEocron, WWIIOL, PLanetside, FOM, all existed within the same damn time.
Im 100% as cool as planetside 2 sound the average person doenst want to F*** with anything made by SOE for the time being. Considering they are hte PC eqivalent of infinity ward. So the days of REAL MMOFPS is long over. forget about it, its a wrap
It..Burns..
