Must be some very good reason, although i can only think of one. It's not as polished/finished as they make us beleive.
That's it for me, not going to buy this game for 60 bucks without a free sneak peek. Going to wait until it gets cheaper or there are free 14 day trials.

Well I for one think of this differently , it is an immediate buy now.
No open Beta is a massive plus, and you will be waiting a long time for a free trial.
A night out is more than $60 so if i get one nights gameplay out of this release I won't be out of pocket.

I don't see how no open beta is a massive plus, do elaborate.
I rather go on a night out in real life with real people than pay $60 for a surprise package.
it was already said at E3. since they have 1mil+ people already signed up for testing(not in testing yet, just signed up), they feel there is no reason to just let in everyone that wants to play or try it out for free, because they have a large enough pool of people right now to select from for any stress testing they need to do.
There won't be an open beta because there are too many people that would want to get in and play. They don't want to have to spend extra money to open more servers just for open beta.
I knew they wouldn't have an open beta from the start, so I never expected an open beta.

There is an agreement between Lucas and Bioware, Lucas get a % of the box sale.
And no open beta will change that coming to light? I can't help but recall the many impressions from demo's etc.. Stating how polished the game actually felt, those go back over a year ago in some cases.

This seems pretty reasonable. Open betas are usually just a mess and serve little perpuse anymore. Just like previous posters, its a free trail. I am sure they would rather try and pick people who actually want to test the game and report bugs, than most open beta players who just want a free trail. It only can lower there sales, or burn out power players who try and see everything in open beta. For a game that has this much hype, there is no reason for them to deal with an open beta
Oh and i assume there will be limited amounts of box sales since everyone wants to play and they don't want to spend the extra money on servers...
How is that even an argument? Thats the most ridiculous excuse i have ever heard.
They just want to maximize box sales, come on guys. Lay of the StarWars crack pipe and be realistic.
So they should start shelling out the money now for all those additional servers instead of waiting and bringing those servers online when the game goes live?
It's not an excuse. It's a financial decision. Limiting the beta and limiting the number of people they let in = a better use of development resources since they don't have to maintain as many servers now. They can use that money to polish the game up more and to get better testing instead of just more people in.
There is no need for excuses to be honest, open beta serves one purpose, a free trial, they don't need an Open Beta for Stress Testing, not with the pool they have at their disposal. Open Beta isn't a bug squashing phase, so what other purpose does it serve?

I'm sure they will sell as many copies as possible, but you can bet at launch they will do their best not to open extra servers just to see them get merged or emptied later on.
The sheer numbers of players trying to get in on launch day is going to be ridiculous and I imagine wait times and lots of instancing of the beginner worlds until the players start to spread out through the game levels.
Did you not see what happened to FF XIV on open beta day? They couldn't handle the numbers of people trying to get in the game. And the same thing would happen with TOR.
If you can't make a decision on whther or not you want to play this game by now, then an open beta isn't going to cut it for you anyways. It will be a typical MMORPG with Bioware's flare and the Star Wars IP.

So, you need to play it for free to see if you like it? Do you play console games, because i know you're not gonna get anything free unless you drop $60 on it first.
I also think not having a open beta is a good thing. Why would they need to have one anyway, with all the different type of testing that have going on as well. Fact, there's over a million people signed up for testing, so they can invite as many as they want to test in closed beta.
People that like open beta's are mostly there for the free ride and once the game goes live they move on to another one. I like to call them mmo jumpers. If someone is truly interested in the game, they would take the time to do some research on the game and follow the official forums for dev and video updates. There's enough stuff out there that can give anyone a pretty good picture of how the game is gonna be without having to get into a open beta.
Yes, pretty much this. I'm afraid a lot of people abuse what a "beta" is for, at least it seems like it. Instead of helping them figure issues out people just trial the game in mass number, causing a lot of issues.

Not all single player games have demos, several you look at the previews and hope you're right. For me I usually get good games like Assassin's Creed, sometimes I get games like Too Human. Why should they be required to have a try before you buy option under a different name of beta? For the most part it doesn't do anything for the developers anyways. There are going to be the people who are going to be buying the game anyways. Than there are going to people the people going squak squak WoW clone WoW clone squak squak(parrot whistle) You than deal with people complaining that they don't get to keep their beta characters, complaining about minor bugs without bothering to report them, or some other sort of sign of self entitlement.
if there was going to be any kind of beta, then it would have been before now, at least with projected release date for november/december.. as for the rest.. who knows.. tbh, after dragon age II... all bets are off..
The same thing will happen regardless so what's the difference, none really. Servers will be bouncing like pole dancers and starting zones will be a nightmare.
I simply don't buy into any hype anymore and judging by all the comments here there is no objectivity when it comes to starwars fans. I understand you like it and most likely would play it if it is a turd dressed in a chewbacca costume.
I for one do pick my games and where my money goes more carefully.
I'm sure many studios would love to have DA2 as the game people judge them on.

Get real it's all about the money, enough people want to play this game and it's probably the most hyped MMO right now for good reason, no open beta means increase in box sales since a lot of people will have no chance to preview it to say yay or nay towards buying it. It's actually a really smart move, and I'm surprised more games don't follow suit even when they end up being crappy.
use the internet and do some reading on it >.> the game just came out its 60 bucks every game cost 60 bucks. nothing free with the 60 bucks you get month free so i dont see the point in your comment. the game dont need you to be awsome i sure it will sell well with others buying it:P.
.....
I can think of another good reason. So they don't have to waste resources on self serving, entitlement deluded, non fans that just want a free trial. For those that just want that, they can wait a few months after release until the devs decide to offer one.

And out comes the straw man, you're so right we don't need an open beta simply because we're all fanbois.

Yeah, (even though I rarely blow more than 50 bucks on a night out myself even though I don't spit in the glass, I guess you go to more expensive places). The probem is that every time a game is about to launch people say that and if you follow the advice for all the games the cost will actually pile up quite a lot and you will get a lot of games like FF XIV that sucks.
I will try out TOR before buying it, if there are no open beta or try out weekend and I wont get in the closed beta I will wait until I get a free trial.
While TOR sounds pretty fun I am not that impressed by Biowares later games (DA 1 & 2, ME 1 & 2) so I actually need some kind of proof beore deciding if I want to play it.
This policy have kept me from buying a lot of crap during the years and I stick to it. You also wont hear me whining about a game I bought that sucks because I know what I am buying.
So I don't agree with you, of course that might be partly because my economy at the moment is the lowest for 9 years so I need to be selective when buying games at the moment...
Ok no worries ... oh yeah, Vader is Luke's father.
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
I don't care. Wouldn't sign up if they offered OB simply because I love the 'new-game' feel, and I'd prefer the experience to be as bugless as possible. Kudos to all the testers who actually DO test the game and not just playing a free trial!
I agree indeed
Trion had a solid game and launched Rift with an open beta, and it has been a success in terms of box sale (pity about the longevity though)
If someone has a good product has nothing to fear from an open beta which in fact become a great marketing tool.
