I am bored and I need a MMO to get into. What are pretty populated games now-a-days?

    WoW, Guild Wars, LOTRO, DDO...

Look at the hype in the game list. The perfect game will not just come to you.

I suppose  I meant, not exactly the mainstream ones. Everyone and their grandma plays WoW and I may go back to it.

    Look around.

I could help you more if you gave specifics as to what kind of MMO you prefer.

Here's a general list of good MMO's (released and unreleased)

    1. Guild Wars 2

    2. World of Warcraft

    3. Dragon Nest

    4. Vindictus

    5. Tera

I am looking for something smooth and polished. Something well done, high production quality. Like WOW, but populated as well. I may just end up going back to WOW but I was trying to avoid that.

    You want high production quality?

Well current released game-wise, you should play Vindictus.

Its populated and has extremely high production quality.

It runs on steams very own source engine.

The graphics look like they were torn straight from Final Fantasy XIII.

the gameplay is not like wow, but has its own unique charm that sets itself aside from usual click and wait MMO's.

It has a lack of open world but makes up for it with Dungeons.

The story and art are very surreal and lush that really set the atmosphere and environment.

That statement hurt me. No game that is 95% dungeon based makes up for any lack of effort. It cannot be a high quality production game when they took an easy shortcut to avoid open worlds. Its a lack of effort ultimately and makes a game that much less fun.

Personally, I would not suggest playing Vindictus until that open world may be introduced.

or City of Heroes/Villains, theres a deal at the moment i think on the new Rogue expansion..  alternatively .. FFXI .. also a deal on steam.. both games have decent enough populations as far as i can tell, and they both have a decent amount of content .. seriously though.. the games list.. can't go wrong with it.. the number and quality of games available today.. the only real problem you should have is not finding a game, but finding enough hours in the day to play them all image

Dungeons and Dragons Online f2p, as a time sink before the next big thing. Or it may be liked so much eventually, might still stay as the main time sink even after the next big things are out.

    You caught me.

The dungeons absolutely do not make up for the lack of open world.

although polished and refined, the game is heavily instanced and (like me) will possibly turn you off after the first 20 levels or so.
