    vanguard is nothing more than a LoTRO with EQ skin. Its never was going to go anywhere. I like it, but like LoTRO, its too restricted

     Please elaborate on how LOTRO is anything like Vanguard?  You say the game is restrictive in which way exactly?

    its a PvE focused MMORPG. Pve and even PvP focused MMORPG are niche groups for MMO.don't act like you didn't expect this outcome.

    They're probably still around because they're making money from SOE.

    Heh, companies in general are mercenary in their practices, not just SoE. If you follow what companies do in the press, you'd see what I'm trying to say here, and that's only the stuff that gets reported! Does that really mean that SoE is the worst? No, not by a long shot.

    I could list tons of things that other game companies have done that have been just as nasty. Just take a look at Funcom for example:

    -released Notum Wars as the first expansion to AO; it didn't really add much to the gameplay but FC charged the normal expansion price for it;

    -never fixed glaring bugs and design issues with professions for free, in fact one had to buy their second expansion, SL, to patch up many character progression holes for example;

    -after two expansions, added the froob experience with free gameplay in RK and ads, who cares about their vets right?;

    -started offering expansions + the original game to froobs for much much less than to those who already had paying accounts;

    -added RMT to a subscription based game (the first?);

    -made huge hype about AoC's M rating and had lots of chauvinistic ads about it having boobs, gore, and tons of PvP features and other "cool content", but when the game released, very little of the latter was in (it just about only had boobs and gore in the game);

    -ended up diluting AoC, to the point that it has very little now to do with the original game.

    And of course in both cases (and especially in AO's case) there were just tons and tons of bugs.

    There's a reason why people call it Failcom. The above is just a few of the switch-and-bait tactics they employ to try to rip people off. Sure, SoE are no angels at all, but if they are the devil, then all game companies are.

    Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.

    impressive.. anyone who can draw comparisons in a game with such diametrically different mechanics..  have to really wonder if they have played either game image

    The Problem is Smedley. It would even be better if Mc Quaid would lead the studios. It was always him who decided all the bad stuff about the games.

    If they would focus on doing the right things to the games WITHOUT thinking too much about just earning money, their IPs and games would be far more successful.

    The gamers play games from awesome devs, with awesome communities and awesome ideas. That is uber important for MMO-gamrs... it is all about reputation.

    its not exactly surprising though.. when the bean counters are running the asylum..  as for reputation.. i think its fair to say that among MMO gamers, SOE's reputation is somewhat lacking.. ranging from distrust to outright hostility..  that kind of reputation, is hard to earn.. and hard to change.. SOE have managed to excel in areas that most other MMO companies try to avoid...image

    I played EQ2/Vanguard for about 1 and 1/2 years 2009/2010. The cost per month of $29.99 seemed awfully expensive to play just two MMOs (dislike the others), especially as one was no longer being supported and the other had old graphics that had trouble with Win7. Station Launcher, which we were required to have at the time to download the games, more frequently than not screwed up the game every time there was a new update. I finally got fed up and quit the game.

    Recently SOE dropped the price of subscriptions to $19.99. I thought that was more in line economically. I paid for a long subscription. Then I logged into the game. SOE had frozen three of my alts even though I P2P. I had to buy THREE (!!!) extra character slots just to get back my characters. If I had known ahead of time I would not have subscribed.
