...which ones are good, and which ones are icky?

P.S. What are some good single-player RPG's where you can customize your own

character, like you do in EverQuest?

I can't comment on many of the free ones. I tried ROSE Online and Kal-Online, but ROSE was an open beta and I never got very far in Kal-Online. (The visual spam from the player shops in both games was so overwhelming I gave up early).

As far as customization in single player RPGs, I'd have to say that the Elder Scrolls series is about the best. Morrowind is the most recent, but it's still a year or two old. Most of Morrowind's character customization comes in the form of skills, but you have about the same number of facial options as you do in Everquest 1. I haven't played any single player games with the level of visual customization available in City of Heroes, let alone Star Wars Galaxies (which, in my opinion, wins the prize in that department). I believe I read an interview with one of the developers of Jade Empire (which I love) who commented that using basic models allowed them to integrate player characters into more intricate cinematics/cut scenes which otherwise wouldn't be possible.

In the oldies but goodies category: I'm assuming you've played Baldur's Gate II. If not, definitely pick up the collector's pack for that. It couldn't be cheaper, and it's one of the best games you can have. Old as it might be, it still looks fairly good for a 2d game and it has a huuuuuge mod community. People have written dozens and dozens of NPC characters (complete with scripts, voices and quests), extra quests for the main characters, dialogue options, all kinds of things. Some other great old games are Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, Fallout I & II, and Divine Divinity (like a better version of Diablo with a much worse name).

Another thing you might try (if you're not opposed to a lot of reading) would be the MUD community, which seems to be getting more and more recommendations lately for some odd reason. There are right around 1800 MUDs, and 98% of those are free. Granted, a lot of them are stock code, but there are some really terrific ones out there as well. You'll even have an advantage, since stock code will still be new to you. You'll also find themes for everything: Star Wars, Star Trek, Vampire: The Masquerade, superheroes, David Eddings books, Robert Jordan books, darned near anything and everything you can think of. In a lot of the codebases, you kill things, loot things, and level up as per the usual. MUDs were pretty much the templates for MMOs, so you'll find a lot of familiar commands and terms. There are also MUSH/MUX/MOO codebases, which are far more heavily into roleplaying and building.

I'm not sure I really gave you any answers you were looking for, but at least I filled up a page or two with text you may or may not find helpful in the process. ::::39::

Adventure quest is a pretty good single player rpg ( www.battleon.com ). I don't really know any of the good ones on the list.

The Best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time.

flyff is like a demo. something thats ok to try for a few days.
has some major issues that jsut make it not worth playing.

my suggestion is ferentus. http://www.ferentus.com/main.php?p=skillsguides its a little better.

.... when you said demo you made me think of that thread BETA S ARE NOT DEMOS

and demos never have bugs, demos are the final release of a game but its just a small chunk >_>
