Why are other MMO communities so much friendlier?

LienhartLienhart Member UncommonPosts: 662

Specifically speaking, Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese communities.

The amount of crap, smack talk, and balance disucssion is so little compared to that of NA. I spent a large amount of my childhood gaming on TW Lineage 2. I then, with a few Korean friends, are currently playing TW TERA. TERA is kinda lacking right now, but the community is amazing.

And fyi, I can read Chinese. It's so sad. I'm gonna try WoW next...see if it has the same racist and anti-social things that North America has.

If you ignore the trade channel you would not know WoW was so bad off.

LotRO's GLFF channel (global looking for fellowship) since going to f2p has become much like WoW's trade channel now.

Some of the best NA mmo communities I've saw so far are FE, EQ2 and maybe not now but LotRO.

FE really does set a great example with how nice a community it has.

    Played: MCO - EQ/EQ2 - WoW - VG - WAR - AoC - LoTRO - DDO - GW/GW2 - Eve - Rift - FE - TSW - TSO - WS - ESO - AA - BD
    Playing: Sims 3 & 4, Diablo3 and PoE
    Waiting on: Lost Ark

...the best NA communities I've seen are ALL from F2P games. But the games suck -_- what gives?! And I don't mean American F2P games, I mean the translated ones that still have Korean letters in them. Well...they usually have great communities,  until the Mexicans and BR gets involved.

I think you just have to look at cultural differences for your answer. I've had quite a few miiltary friends who live or have lived in Asian countries. All of them say one thing in common, people are really nice and neighborly. Americans for the most part simply aren't, sure there are exceptions, but on a whole they tend to get off on stirring up trouble, medling in others affairs, or being outright A-holes. I don't know about Euro's haven't met enough to really have an opinion on their typical behavior.

    lol lienhart!

Dont worry its just not in NA.

Go to the singapore servers and youll see the BR army moving in there.

But yes f2p games tend to have much nicer and friendlier people.  Like umm.DOMO.  From day 1 till I quit, it was all friendly people I came across.  And I played that for a couple of months!

Too bad anything over 4gb ram will make the game bug and look worse than minecraft :/

My experience of Koreans aren't as nice as your, In the beta of Lineage every third player was Korean and they weren't very popular. While some of them were nice they had the worst bunch of griefers I ever seen as well, and I seen a lot in 15 years.

I think this is just a "grass is greener on the side of the fence" thing.

Some games have better communities than others, but that is because those games are better for forming communities. Games were soloing or backstabbing is the best way to get around get horrible communities.

Smaller games tend to get better communities as well, since people bonds more in smaller groups.

But I don't believe that nationality affects how good a community is.

I played PSO on the Dreamcast. I was able to play with gamers from Japan. The game launched about a month earlier there than in NA so we were severely outleveled by the time we got a chance join the fray. Nevertheless, I was constantly being helped by Japanese gamers. I would get powerleveled through zones that were trivial for them. And they handed me weapons, armor, mags, gold, you name it. I never even asked for help, it was just people constantly offering. And I was always treated with kindness. It was one of the coolest online game experiences Ive had. I always think of that when I play MMOs today and I try to be helpful and polite when I meet a new face.

LOL you haven't played EVE.   Trust me, EVE has more arse-hats, clowns and jerks, per-capita than any game currently on the market and that includes WoW.

I had the same thing when I played PSO: BB for PC. And PSU.

I'm glad it's not just me....I should pick up Japanese, they seem to be the friendliest bunch.

I think in general its a culture thing.  In NA, kids are learning from a young age that its ok to be handed everything in life, not work to create friendships because they are social, but only as a means to suceed, and even then its just so they can later step on the person if it gives them a boost.

Only here in NA do 10-12 year old gives form gangs, run around school swearing like sailors assualting teachers. In any other country those kids would be beat with a solid stick.  Not here, you cant touch a child in punishment without it being a crime.

As a country, the United States wont survive the century.  Between current politians screwing things up now, and the statistics on how many kids (our future?) are either on drugs, joining gangs, failing at school or are just plain being raised to hate everyone else, and you cant see any other outcome.

This is why NA communities suck, because no on in this country cares about anyone but themselves.

Best communities I've ever been a part of were

    1) Fallen Earth

    2) SWG Pre NGE

    3) COH pre Villains

And to a lesser degree, the PSO / PSU series as the games are just based around cooperation.  The hubs were always a place where you could just hang out and talk.

My time in L2 wasn't nearly as great... FFXI wasn't so bad,  but I couldn't stand the game mechanics overall.

Though I am sure no one will pay any heed this deep in the thread. Look up some of Hofstede's work on collectivist cultures, and Hall's on context dependent cultures and languageswhich will give you an answer. Insults do run abound in any culture just folks in the states are a bit more direct about it. There's also the foreigner factor (not the band) going on here in some cases. I lived in Japan for 9 years teaching at a uni and my wife is Japanese so I have a decent understanding of the culture. In EQ1 I was in a wonderful Japanese guild as well, and I found the people to be great and helpful. Then again, I've also been in great North American and Aussie guilds which were just as rewarding. Though little quality research has been done on MMORPGs (check the journal of Cyberpsychology for most of the good stuff and a few journals/book on serious game studies), it would be interesting to see how culture influences online communities in such games. An interesting discussion here nonetheless =)

And speaking of PSO.. I miss PSO! Wish they had a true PSOverse MMORPG

I had the same experience playing PSO on my pc a few months ago.  Japanese players 40+ lvls higher than me would come and help me out in the normal forest 1 stages just for the sake of it.

As for Koreans I've only really played with one player.  Lots of people accused him of being a gold farmer but he never spammed and he always shared the loot he got from world bosses with me so I think they were just being prejudice.  It seems Koreans as a whole are more hardcore when it comes to gaming, playing dozens of hours at a time to be the best at what they do.  The only other time I ran into Korean players they were farming world bosses and would kill steal anyone that got in their way.  It wasn't personal and they didn't talk crap, they just seem a lot more hardcore and unforgiving in their games.  It's practically their life.

It's just not care-bear friendly, that's all.  It's a "school of hard knocks" type of mmo, and if you screw up because of your own stupidity or get scammed, you learn from it and get going again.  Whiners get dumped on with a gigantic vat of vitriol, which is as it should be in a dog-eat-dog game.

If you're nice and "submissive" to people('s self-proclaimed superior) abilities (aka inflated ego), you usually get more help out of EvE players than any other, and are generally treated very nicely. A female avatar helps too...

Oh, manipulative you say? Well, you know, it's a dog-eat-dog game......

PS: About the cultural thing. All the Englishmen I met so far (during my visits of the UK) were very funny, open and polite. I really can't say that about my trips to the US, most people were nice there, but many also had extreme views of how social interaction should be run and many had no manners whatsoever, be it eating, driving or yelling on the street. Germany's pretty friendly too, though that's probably biased, the US soldiers (stationed here) I know confirm this though...

Sorry again not buying it. I have played EVE for over 5 years and i have met all kind of players in there. It has its share of immature players like any other MMO but griefing is lot less in other themepark MMOS compared to EVE. Every PVP MMO brings along the twisted type who get kicks out of harassing others.

As far as being nice to others and getting help from them it is something true for any other MMO you play.

I've never had any complaints with the EVE community, as was mentioned, it is in fact a more challenging and unforgiving game universe and the community will punish weakness and stupdity.

But with the right approach, I've never found a more helpful bunch of folks, I've had people who've killed me offer advice on what I did wrong but I won't deny if you whine about dying expect to get mocked.

As for communities, the few times I've encountered Japanese players (back in DAOC) it was always a great experience, I used to heal for this one group and outside of a few English words spoken by the groups leader, I had no idea what they were saying. But they used to invite me back regularly, and we all laughed a lot in our many adventures.

Korean gamers, not such a great experience.  Both times was in Lineage 1/2 and in each Koreans were some of the most hostile, nationalistic players I've ever met.  Perhaps within their own community they were polite to each other, but towards other cultures they were quite hostile and generally were hated enough for alliances to form that were basically Koreans vs everyone else.

Strangely enough, the nicest players in Lineage 2 often were the gold farmers, on more than one occasion I was invited to share a camp site with players whose names I'm pretty sure denoted Gold Farmer 1, Gold Farmer 2 etc yet they let me group with them without comment.

Ive gotten to where I think if a game has global chat, I dont really want to play it. The MMO community is so immature these days and I just dont think proper policing of channels is possible given the sheer number of kids flooding chat with rediculous drivel.

I can't speak for how Asian communities are, but from my experience I've found European communities friendlier or more relaxed than US communities. Of course, that's speaking in general and based on averages, you'll have assholes everywhere, the same as friendly, helpful faces.

In the same line, in my experience it generally is like this regarding friendly/relaxed attitude among a server community:

RP server > PvE server > PvP server

I think it's all in perception really (although I won't deny the Chinese and Japanese, as people and as ethnic groups, are incredibly polite and respectful, and for the Japanese in particular, extremely resilient to hardship.)

I found LOTRO's community almost unbearable: they were helpful, yes, but also up-tight, arrogant cretins who had a huge opinion of themselves and their game that really wasn't justified. They were so incredibly ignorant of the world outside their precious little game it was remarkable; and any banter, even harmless stuff, was frowned upon.

EVE, on the other hand, had a lot of bastards, but they weren't morons. They were clever. They were smart, and I lost stuff becuase I was stupid. And a lot of folks were really nice as well without LOTRO's snobbery.

And, as a Brit, I often wish I could play with Americans more. They're normally really nice, outgoing and easy to talk to, whereas I've found Europeans (Brits included) are generally really polite, but also fairly insular. That's not to say they're not great people (and in the long run I'd probably get on better with a fellow Euro rather than an American) but I've found that, compared to Americans, it takes time to really get to know people.

On the flipside, most of the community horror stories you hear about I almost never see on EU realms (aside from AoC; that's a cesspool) so it's always give-and-take when it comes to people, really.

RIFT was a *crushing* disappointment; a shallow, loveless, generic MMO the likes of which hasn't been seen in a P2P format since, well, forever.

Eagerly awaiting: World of Darkness, ArcheAge.
