Books on MMO's

ppsykeppsyke Member Posts: 39

hi everyone.

my girlfriend wants to get into mmo's and i am quite the worst possible teacher around i lack patience and so does she and so far this has caused alot of arguments when i try to explain stuff.

she does like the read though which is good as i can find  good simple, very simple book for her to read to learn about the basics, eg: trinity system, items stats, fighting blah blah  and such which varie over diffrent games.

would anyone know of any such books? there a few out there i know of but not sure what to get her.

thank s

The mechanics of most MMORPGs are pretty simple to grasp.  I don't think there's an "idiots guide" for playing MMOs though.  I'd recommend her reading the game manual, and reading the tooltips.  What mechanics are you having difficulties explaining to her?

mmorpgs for dummies is a great book for that

MMOs are actually incredibly ocmplex if the person in question dont play games.

HAve you even decided on which game you two or she is going to play?  Because seriously there are guides in all the mmos official forums o.o

When I bought the battlechest for Wow long time ago it came with three books, I believe two are actual strategy guides and one explains how everything works like you asked. So ye, I think that is perhaps the best way to go at it.

Much, much faster to get someone to play alongside her than going through a book, if playing... The teacher just needs patience for mistakes. Beginners can be the most fun collection of ppl to teach as their "first!-o-meter" is always pointing at max on the dashboard. : )

I've always wondered why they have walkthrough books for basically every single player game, but not MMO's I used to have a huge collection of printed out information on EQ1. I guess that is the problem. There is so much content in most MMO's that it would be an encyclopedic set of tomes.

as with most things, the explaination is in the language used.  if you understand the language, you understand alot about how things work.

Only way for your g/f to learn is by doing. Most decent MMO's have in game tutorials and game tips.

Well as said before the best way to learn is by doing.

My suggestion would be that since she loves to read, you find books set in the universe of whatever MMO you play. If she enjoys the lore behind the world, she will have no problem jumping in the game and learning how to play.

a good thing to do is first set up on an mmorpg and then the systems you wish to learn on that mmorpg will be on that games wiki, and those wikis are perfect for newbies and veterans alike

learn by doing is the way to go. its how my gf became a part time gamer to begin with.

basically she was reading on the couch while i played dragonage, then she sat next to me and started asking questions, then i grinned at one point and said, wanna try it out? *swoosh!* basket! and gooaaaaaal!

anyways after that she noticed me playing EQ2 and has basically hijacked my account and my Dirge...

becareful what you wish for i spose ;)

so in both cases it was here watching me play, asking questions, then playing with me alongside her, then playing on her own.

course, she's got an attitude that she can take on anything (which is so hot btw) and she just started playing on her own when she felt comfortable.

learn by doing, its not the only way, but it is the best, imo.

i have tried to teach or it's just i am really bad at trying to teach people i loose it quite often.

i don't want to try and play next to her as i don't want the agro of arguing all the time over the basics.

just need something simple for her to read.. really simple with maybe something advanced at the end of the book
