Seriously guys. These indie devs, the SV guys the DF guys the Xsyon guys. They in a way prey on the Full Loot PVP crowd. They know they can make a half finished game and still (at least initially) have X number of you guys willing to hang in there because someone is making a niche game, your niche.
Ask yourself this, why doesnt a financially solid stable and richly talented dev house make a Free For All Full Loot PVP title? Ill tell ya why. The market isnt there to support a return on investment to make it worth their while. So in steps the "indie" developer. Claiming to be the salvation for you Free For All Full Loot PVPers. And you get the same thing time and time again, a half built game full of bugs.
Meanwhile the rest of the MMO market sits back and goes, hmm another cool gameworld filled with mindless PVP. They stay clear and the tiny niche market that waited patiently for it, moans and groans about the problems and the potential etc etc. Then turns their sights on the next indie team (looking for that tiny market to support them) claiming to have the perfect Free For All Full Loot PVP experience ala UO.
I dont know what to tell ya its the same pattern over and over. And its likely to stay that way.

Didn't know that sandbox PvP was mindless, If sandbox PvP is mindless, what is themepark PvP?

we all pretyt much know this
there are 2 types of mmo, imitators and innovaters.
Structured, and people thrive in a structured environment. People flock to a structured enviornment. Countries and business thrive in a structured enviornment. People run from Chaos. Theres your niche the people that enjoy chaos.
It's like he's finally discovering that water is wet, and is now trying to think of the best scientific journal to send his report to.
Well i like Xsyon... I am not a pvp or a full loot fanatic. I totally understand its not yet reached greatness but for what it offers i enjoy it once a week or more... thats enough for me to keep a subscription
themepark may be nicely structured but there are no consequences for losing, so really it's not going to resonate with some people. sandbox pvp when done well (eve) hooks people because losing/not losing matters.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.

The majority of people are sheep, and this is what Governments and theme park developers count on. Structure is for those who can't think for themselves, and need a shepherd to guide them and the rest of the flock. Sandbox gamers thrive ona lack of structure.
"I am not in a server with Gankers...THEY ARE IN A SERVER WITH ME!!!"
Sandbox players are allowed to create their own structure in-game, whether that's social, economic, or political.
I've always thought of it this way: Themepark players want to read a great story, sandbox players want to write one.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Without turning this political, the United States of America, most of North America, most of Europe is very structured and very succesfull. Insert third world country here full of Chaos. Where do you want to live, work and play?
Some players yes, most no and EVE is FAR far more structured than one might think, I am referring to the failing Full Loot PVP games with little to no rules or structure (which is pretty much every PVP game with little to no structure).
when dfs expansion goes live it will be even more ahead then these other games. and when the expansion goes live they will finaly promote and advertise their game put it on steam and stuff and im sure the playerbase will have a huge blast like it did when it first launches but then in a game that after alot of work improved to the players needs.
no i dont work for av but seeing darkfall in the list with mortal online wich is just a corrupt game and xsyon as their devs have said there selves not rich on content wich they will work on the future on o.0 is just a pain in the ass.
Indie developers really need to get their nostalgia glasses off and move on from "UO 3D" formula into new directions. The old school formula, while may have been loved by many, is no longer as interesting today as it was before, and instead of trying to copy paste UO features into 3D enviroment as MO did, developers should try and find the patterns and reasons which made the game great and then apply them to new settings (everything except the cliche might and magic) and new features.
Full loot, skill cap and city building are not only things that can make a game great, instead we should look at what kind of feelings they trigger and look for other features that will bring same result. I am sick of indie studios who are making yet another "we gonna do it right, the oldschool way" games. Those games are not made by AAA companies because they have real designers who know the market well, and who know that such games won't be long lasting despite what the fanbase may delude themselves with.
However what saddens me most is that while AAA developers understand what makes a game, they don't dare to try exploring new patterns and features due to all the money which are invested in such projects, prefering sticking to the yet another EQ/WoW clone, resulting in us being left with yet another UO 3D attempt.
Indie studios are no better then AAA developers in the way of not being able to let a pattern go. As AAA developers can't let the WoW pattern go, indie developers can't take off their nostalgia glasses and let UO pattern go. Time to move on people!
The only interesting project in that sense I've seen lately is http://www.originsmmo.com/ . Now there we got some guys who realised that you can't stick to the wow pattern all the time, but neither is oldschool is the answer.
