General: Why San Diego Comicon Sucks

In regard to the TV shows... Community belongs at SD Comicon. Episodes are riddled with geek fare, and a few were directly dedicated to Star Wars, D&D, and one zombie apocalypse episode with an ending narration by George Takei. Everything a con goer loves.

Wow, I'm not sure you meant it to be, but that was a pretty hilarious read, particularly the bits about the twelve glasses of milk and the twilight girls.

Regarding conventions, though, this is how things usually happen. They start small, build to a comfortable level that may be sustained for a time, and either die or grow too large. We saw it with E3, and it's happening to the Game Developer's Conference.

    well, I suppose I'll comment:

dumb list for the most part

    5. Deepak Chopra

True he doesn't belong here, it's just cashing in one his "brand". however, if he has something to say that connects the topic of thousands of players eagerly consuming preposterous content (in the best way) and spiritualism then "sure" it could be interesting

    4. Star Wars

Who cares? 3? 5? 2? As long as there are people interested in collecatables and the movies and the "hero of a thousdand faces" then why should it matter how many? It's quasi sci fi. You arne't going to find a lot of this on the front of the wall street journal or boston globe. If no one attends then they will know better next time.

    3. Twilight

Well, I have to say that I'm not a Twilight fan but come on! It's not any worse than green lantern or the hulk or spider man, etc. I mean, do people actually think they can say "batman" is any "better" than twilight? It's all ridiculous. We are not talking Shakespeare or Coward Wallace Stephens here. There are clearly fans of twilight. And die hard fans. they have as much right to have a panel of their favorite made up heroes and universe as the next person. Glowing vampires are every bit as ridiculous as super heroes in tights, bizzarre and convoluted story lines and "alternate realities". Sorry, just because you aren't a fan doesn't mean that you get to diss on Twilight and somehow you have street cred when defending any number of ridiculous super heroes, fantasy characters or anything else one dreams up.

    2. TV

TV as a media is fine. I mean, people seem to be tuning in on many HBO series and loving it. Just because it's on TV doesn't mean it's good but doesn't mean it's bad. Having said that, the list given didn't seem at all related to the spirit of comicon so I'll agree with that part.

    1. GLEE

So what if you don't like Glee? I'ts a very well done show. Here's a tip: just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not good.

For some reason I can't help imagining the same scenario with Twilight: someone dissing on someone else's favorite "whatever" and then defending somethign that can equally be seen as ridiculous in another's eyes.

As far as Glee being at Comicon? Well, i can't see a reason that it should be there. I suppose the only tie-in I can imagine is the idea of "geeks" loving something and rising above stereo types in order to prove that they are more than the negative comments that others might have about them.

Negative comments about comic book collectors or mmo players, or LARP people or you pick your poison.

Dissing on someone else's passion because you don't like it is not cool in my book. Assessing whether something should be at comicon seems in the realm of appropriate. But when it comes to geek culture it's still "geek culture". If anything supporting what other people fancy, no matter how preposterous might go farther than tryign to assume a high road when talking about "dorky subjects". Or perhaps we can start dissing on cosplay people as well? maybe a few "get a life" comments. Or is cosplay so much "less geeky" than other geek topics?

Deepak Chopra was one of the founders of Virgin Comics which later became Liquid Comics. I believe he also wrote a number of the comics released under Virgin Comics.

Thank you Elikal, my point exactly.

Look, people dont' like certain things, I get it. And perhaps some of the TV panels don't belong at comicon.

but unless we are willing to say that the only thing that comicon allows is "comics" then we have to assume it's now more slanted to anything "geek culture".

I'm perfectly happy with that. Maybe some hardcore comic guys might (rightfully?) rant that video games and movies don't have anything to do at comicon.

I think they would have a more justifiied argument over "x bit of geek culture isn't to my taste so it doesn't belong".

It's very poor form to diss on another's taste. whether it's Twilight or Glee or Spiderman or Thor or 'whatever".

Because if one thing can be considered "lesser" then in someone else's eyes they call can be considered lesser.

well, I'll be honest, I'm a spiderman fan.

And in the movies, when spiderman saves the train but practically faints and is 'rescued" by the people of the train, I'm not embarrassed to say that I had a few tears in these old eyes.

But I'm sure there are people who look at spiderman and roll their eyes and wonder "why".

I never got the Twilight hype, nor did I get the Twilight hate. It's a typical teen girls fantasy, so I am not the target audience anyway. *shrug* Never understood the hate tho, it's like hating kid comics. They are not MEANT for you. Also I never was into that Vampire theme. But thats just me.

Glee... well it has gay people singing and dancing. So I guess I am biased, lol. XD

Overall: I never found ANY con really informative or useful, for me all a big waste of time, unless you want to soak up some geekyness. I guess in my advanced age of 40 I am not into this anymore. Wait. I never was! Oh screw that. =P

Kinda pointless to say this but just wanted to note: GLEE does not = band kids, at least not in my book. I see nothing there that reminds me of band back in high school. If anything its more like chorus.

On another note, this makes me feel as if I should never try to get to the SDCC, is it really not worth it...?

Wow, I had no idea it had gotten this bad.   After reading this, I wholeheartedly agree with the OP that San Diego Comicon now sucks.

I'm a bit surprised at some of the defensive remarks.    The OPs opinion of the quality of some shows aside, things like Twilight and Glee have nothing to do with comics, and as such, do not belong at a comic convention IMO.

  • jinxxed0jinxxed0 Member UncommonPosts: 841

lol. i agree with everything. while i love Community, it doesnt belong there. They (glee and others) need to have their own convention. Call it Sheeplecon

That right I said it. San Diego Comicon has become a complete joke. Sure all you fanboys (and I mean that in a good way)  . .

The reason why it sucks for me is that I actually was looking up passes last night since it's in my back-yard, but it's sold out.  I would have paid to have fun there, inside, and just taking-in all the atmosphere...as well as getting a sneak-peek at GW2  :)

As an side. . .as long as we clarify after calling someone or eluding that someone is a fanboi or troll with "and I mean it in a good way", a moderated warning wont follow...lol...ohh...I meant it in a good way :)

Once again I find myself agreeing with one of your articles, why does that matter.

Becuase for the most part I think you so full of shit, and yourself, that I cant imagine how you can pull yourself away from a mirror to write. Okay, okay Im just kidding, I didnt mean any of that. Some of what youve been writting lately has been some major boring shit, but your starting to get back into that vibe that I use to like.

Oh, and I couldnt agree more. Great article!

But I wonder if what made these things geeky to the Gen-xr's (me) has just evolved into more of a main stream teen pop culture that we (I) tend to find vile.

Blame it on the comic book movies, our last bastion, commercialized and brought to the masses. And fucking Transformers man, and GI Joe to, wtf thats my childhood they're whoring out.

They made geeky-ness popular and cool.

"I understand that if I hear any more words come pouring out of your **** mouth, Ill have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."

I would completely agree with you except that there are video games and sci-fi/fantasy movies at comicon.

So either they bring it back to its roots get rid of things that have nothign to do with comics or we say "well, it's a con for geekdom" and move along.

ComicCon has become more about "geekdom" and all thigns that geeks love.

Is it commerical? Probably. But if you follow the geek road then that road goes through many things.

There's a film festival. And a good many of those films don't seem to be about comics/comic subjects. Or anything really very geeky.

So yeah, the purity of the event seems to have gone the way of the dodo. But if there is geek love for those events/subjects then there it is.

It's definitly not worse than me sititng for movie credits and getting commercials.

So if some sci fi or fantasy movie/book can be at comic con then Twilight can. As I said, I really don't like Twilight. And I actually sat down and watched the first one precisely so I could say "I've seen the movie and I officially don't like Twilight".

But I would never say that Twilight shouldn't be part of such a festival when Alcatraz or The Secret Circle are there.

Funny how brainwashed some of you have become. GLEE, Twilight? Give me a damn break. Look in the mirror. Mindless, talentless, thoughtless puppetry all on display; gobbling it up like sad little puppies.

That kind of garbage falls within the ranks of Rebecca Black. Are you people mad? Don't give me a speach about "Well, people can do what they want". Sure... they can. Just don't post that garbage on the internet. It's mind melding the garbage the entertainment industry is putting out nowadays. I can't stand it anymore.

    Well then don't go?

The event organisers can put whatever they think is best for the show, ultimately it is their show. While I agree with points above and how TV shows (non comic related) is coming to comiccon, this article became nothing but a rant.

The article should've ended with the sentence "Haters' gonna hate"

Comic-con is a gift not a privilege, I can't even go to comic-con since I'm overseas, stop ranting and be grateful that at least you get to try GW2 and TOR, I'm stuck at watching videos of other people playing the game. Who cares if you have to play next to a twilight fangirl.

I agree with a passion about Glee. Some shows I like (a lot) and the ones I don't like I normally don't care about. Sometimes there is an exception though and in this case it is Glee. I hate that show in the way they rape every type of music. Apparently, some people have to turn every bloody thing in some kind of musical. I also dont understand the casting in that show. It is very clear some of them can't act, dance or sing. All of which seems to be required to win in that kind of competition or even be on such a show.  But maybe a pschycologist could explain why these kind of superficial lala fairy land shows become so popular.

    Oh that's easy.

Regarding the singiing and acting, they are suppose to be high school kids so some of them have to be more "average".

I know that when i was in school doing music there were people who coud sing, carry a tune but they didn't have amazing voices.

The "fairy land show" quip is easy too. These are harder times for many people and during harder times things that elevate people or make people forget those hard times or perhaps even more "brutal" times tend to become more prevalent. Also i reaction to a previous decade.

That's why you have the whole '80's which rose up because of the seriouslness 60's and 70's.

Why monopoly came into being (the game) and why disney became such a success.

in any case I think Celcious said it best early in this thread.

That is not why I hate Glee. I hate Glee because the actors don't portray what the story does. At some point (I only tried to follow one season, the first I think) they were in a serious competition with other schools. And the story portrayed them as having a shot. Still, some of them really can't sing or dance. That just doesn't add up, that is just bad casting.

I dont mind having stereotypes in school either. I agree with what Celcious said. The show is just not inventive in how to portray this and sometimes situations are just way too sloppy written and far fetched.

It is as if the writers have this simplistic view about life and barely experienced it themselves. And let their kidsister do the casting.

But the worst. The music. Why does everything have to be turned into the same generic musical crap? It is one poor cover after cover.

Im dissing the show here, not the people who like it. I have a very broad taste in music and have been surprised with highly entertaining musicals. But this show just butchers music. It is shallow crap.

San Diego Comicon sucks because... comics are a dead scene?
