Does more action style combat lead to less talking to other players?

whilanwhilan Member UncommonPosts: 3,472

We are getting into the age where players need to react to the creatures more. Dodge attacks, find walls to duck behind, aim attacks. Getting into a more action style situation.

This usually comes with various other things like instant rezes, fast healing. So as not to slow down the pace of the game or make it boring to the player.

The question becomes if we are all busy dodging attacks, jumping behind barriers rezing other people, will this alternative affect how much we talk in games as we are too busy trying to avoid things?

we will eventually have to switch to TS or the like to play games? Do you think this is a good thing and will we eventually se the end of chat bars?

I'm just worried that with more action based games and quicker on demand content with less and less downtime it will be more about playing the game then getting to know your fellow members in the world. What are  your thoughts on this?

I think its kind've true. But you also have to account for zero downtime for the most part as well. In older, slower games like EQ I usually didn't chat much in combat either, but there was much more downtime between fights which allowed for more talking to players. You can have the most intense combat in the world, add some downtime and people will still chat.

This just seems like a silly arguement against action combat.

The answer is no. For one theres already barely any typing during mmo combat. And the majority of talking in mmo's ,especially during combat, is already via a voip service.

So exactly how will it change anything?

It's not a arguement against action style combat it's looking into wether action style combat affects how much people talk to each other.

Combat generally includes what you do before during and after. This includes the buffing, attacking and recovering. If these are are fast and quick moving then it provides little time for actual talking to happen, unless of course like i stated everyone moves over to TS or Vent or something.

I actually find chat in mmos to be the most fun activity in these games. A bit like some good banter on a long hike/journey eg.

I don't think the combat is the crux of whether ppl will or will not chat but if the game requires some chat:

    1) Unexpected things -> remark!

    2) Planning/coordinating things with a group of players

    3) Trading/barting things

    4) Letting of steam, socializing activities eg

    5) Population density/frequency

    6) Ease of chat features etc..

    7) Explaining the game

etc. Dungeons are good as they are sorta like an elevator space where ppl's thoughts (or farts!) can be aired; minigames can be very good too etc. If combat requires tactics as well as action then it should still require communication etc...

No, action style combat is fine, but not having forced downtime between fights is what has helped to virtually eliminate interaction between players as they play.

You might be happy that this is how it's done these days, but it did come at a cost to the socialization aspect of MMO's.

This isn't true for many MMO. Many don't use Voip (because of language barriers) and of course action combat reduces typing, you can't type and click buttons at the same time.

My premise is that action combat hurts community building.

Anyone who has played EQ when people had to sit down to meditate knows that what the OP says is true.

People were chatterboxes back then, our MMO was our chatterbox, it's basically all people did while waiting on their mana to come back.

NO! Get a MIC, you are the only one not on the bandwagon.

Yes, streamlined mechanics have cut down on the social aspects of these games. That is what the market demanded.

Not necessarily, look at Eve: I can spend hours in a moderately populated system (50-60 people in local) that isn't a trade hub, and chat will be completely empty other than the occasional troll attempt or a pissing match breaking out over someone's silly killmails.

I would like more MMO's to start instantly putting party members into a "Ventrilo like chat room" imbedded into the game. While it's nice to chat with clanmates and such, it would be nice to meet new people in random pubs. Most people would rather just not type and run through the content in a pub group which is for the most part why they are so much worse than coordinated premades. I found having voice chat in games like Heroes of Newerth has increased my value of enjoyment. If you don't want to hear them you can also simply mute the player so there really is no downside.

I know some games have it but no game has truly implemented it well. Most games rely on Ventrilo to do it for them, but there is a huge benefit to implementing it inside the game.

Not true by an means, first it's a fair question the OP asked, as I see this as a result as well. I type frequently in typical MMO combat (as well as use VOIP), there's a large chunk that don't use voip what so ever. You still need to cordinate with them, especially in PVP. Not to mention allied guilds etc, that aren't all using the same vent/TS.

I could see this being a problem in an MMO with more "actiony" combat where you can't really stop to answer a /tell, or reply in group chat. A communication break down could very much be the result.
