I played a little after launch so my opinion may be a bit off.
The game is a refreshing concept and a different style of combat which is cool and what-not. It's featuring your hack and slash style combat with skills and all of course.
One big problem that I had with the game though is that you could hit the max level (20 at the time) within a weekends play or a week (for the more casual player) and then have nothing really to do but the same old same old. PvP was lacking, mainly due to how I was on a PvE server due to the PvP being full world (great and all) but you'd often find level 20's in the starting zones camping people and restricting you from completeing tasks. That and as I chose the "good" side there was significantly less people in mission zones, which allowed for the "evil" side to gank you and all as you tried to complete quests.
Ultimately it was a cool game for a few days, then got tiring and lead to me uninstalling and leaving it there. Maybe someone else will have a more constructive response as I can tell mine is sort of biased.
This is one of those mmorpgs that follows the same shallow recipe of most mmorpgs. I try them all, but this is one of the few that I didn't have any more interest in even journeying towards end-game after the first week of play. I was lucky that I got an early-start open beta through by pre-ordering, and after that first week, got my money back since the game wasn't oficially launched yet.

Way to lie..
you didn't play at launch. at launch you could hit lvl 30. You played BETA where it was capped at 20.
to the OP
Its a great game if you like having to remember combo's like clickx3 then hold and stuff like that. The PVP is awesome and the raiding actually have somewhat of a plot.
The problems I found was that there was not enough content at the time (the've added 3 content patches I think since I left) and a dwindling population due to too many servers and lack of content. However they are making a mega server and combining them all together so the pop issue will be solved.

30 then my bad.. whatever it was you can cap to it easily as I did. I played in beta and release, and probably got the two mixed level wise.
Now at your lie, the population issue won't be resolved dued to the lack of interest in the game. No one wants a game without content, easily accessible top level, and various other things that generically just ruin the game. Not to mention the PvP sucks horribly on the game.
Its a good game, but not great, wait till they have done the server merge and get a guest key from some one here (i will give you one if I have any left). but right now on the PC its just not worth it due to the low population.
Shame too as it is a fun game, the content is not the major reason for lack of players as there is quite a bit of it now the problem was the ui and social tools, and they are improved but still not great.
Sadly unless SoE do a big relaunch or massive push for subs, the game will never get beyond a niche title, which is a shame because it is a lot of fun.

You're calling his truth a lie because he called you out on something you were wrong about in the first place? C'mon now.
The fact that you haven't been following the game's development means that you know nothing of what the game's population is like so please avoid talking about it. As someone who has been keeping in touch with the my friends who are still playing the game; apparently the test servers for DCUO have been updated with the mega servers and my friends who currently still play the game and have gotten the test server say it was packed with people. This means that once the servers go live, there will be a lot more people playing the game and the fact that update 4 is coming with both the megaservers, 4-man versions of some of the raids and a few new raids means that there will be a lot more content in the game in a few weeks time and more people will be on to play.
I believe that the game is fun and there are people who enjoy it and would come back to experience the new content. The Fight for the Light content pack should also add a month or two to the lenght at which people who come back will stay.
And finally, PvP sucks in your opinion, for others, it does not.
This is what you are going to get from DCU in its current shape
A new actiony combat system. Some people love it and some hate it, but it certainly feels designed for a console controller. Be warned there is a lot of clicking. Really a lot of clicking.
You will most likely get your first character to max level in a week or two, depending on how casual you play. Leveling is quick, really quick and there isn't much content. You will have seen almost all of the leveling content so if you make a second character you will be doing most of the same missions over. Some might be slightly reskinned to suit leveling a hero versus a villian, but they are the same exact missions.
The game world is going to be very empty. Once you finish leveling there little reason to actually go into the game world, so very few of the remaining people still do. The world is a ghost town and by the time you reach max level you will have seen the all the areas in both cities. The game world is really small and can be travelled from one end to the other in just a few minutes.
At max level the game almost instantly changes into running instanced missions that are limited to once per day. Grinding missions and raids for tokens to get suits of raid armor is the extent of the end game content. That is it for end game content.
The next three game updates have already been discussed and it looks like nothing but mudflation of the raid suit gear as players are given new suits that require more tokens for the next 6-8 months.
The next game update is going to feature Krytpo the super dog as the end boss fight.

You clearly as a mindless fan boy of the game... I do not blame you for not being able to see the truth. The games population is so lacking they're merging into "mega servers"... that alone should prove my point right there. Now as someone who understands population (as I thought this was fundamental) I again tell the OP this game is a waste of your time and not to invest into it.
I'd tell you to test it but they have no trial still, but go all over the site there is reviews on the game EVERYWHERE. It's a typical Sony product -- crap.
One thing not mentioned is that the game is full of bugs and exploits that have gone unfixed for months. Severe, game breaking exploits, expecially in PvP, simply get left unaddressed by SOE. So if you're a fan of PvP at all, you need to be prepared to run into that as well.
I'm too lazy to type this out again; here is my response in another thread like this:
If you have more money than sense this might be a perfect game to play.
Expect to be 'triple dipped' for your sub, content/new powers (DLC's), and micro-transactions to have something to do with people, if you can find them.
On the PC side you will be lucky to find 50-75 people on the most populated servers (not hyperbole).
The game itself is buggy, shallow, and has a quick leveling process only to repeat the leveling quests again and again at max level. I ran through every bit content in that game (raids included) in under 50 hours (more like 30 but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one).
If you treat it as a single player game (with the population it almost is) that is disposable after the 30 sub days are up, it might be fun. It is no where worthy of a sub or DLC's, no matter how trivial the asking price is right now.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I broke two mice (mouses'?) playing this clickfest.
Yeah, I think I definitely want to try it, because I want to play a superhero MMO badly, but from the sounds of it, it is definitely a try before you buy. I guess I just wait.
Yeah, I think I definitely want to try it, because I want to play a superhero MMO badly, but from the sounds of it, it is definitely a try before you buy. I guess I just wait.
If you're looking for a superhero MMO "badly", then you have 2 alternative options for PC.....
Champions Online is F2P, although mostly a solitary game experience with regards to PvE. It does have PvP if you're looking for it.
City of Heroes still reigns as king of the superhero mmo's and currently has 7 day and 10 day trials. It is going with a F2P/freemium model sometime in the fall, but you can also pick up older boxes on the cheap to create a an account and add gametime (plus perks) (note, you can't stack the same boxes on a single account) now. It also zone and arena-based PvP, but that's a very small population at this point.
Pros: Awesome graphics, combat, travel powers and character creation.
Cons: Unbalanced, too difficult after endgame, heavily consolized, not enough content for a sub game, many unaddressed bugs, low population
Bottome line if you enjoyed COH you won't get into this game as much after the initial wow factor wears off by endgame. Just another in a LONG list of games that could have been incredible.
I played for several months pretty much every day which is rare for me to do so.
I liked the arcade aproach to it.
I got bored ultimately when I thought the only reason to get iconic armour was to be better at doing the end-game content that you'd have to repeat loads of times to get anyway. It seemed slightly pointless in that respect.
Though, people asked for more content, and that's what they have been given.
DCU is ever improving it's game. I think you'd enjoy playing it.
but if you want some fun going to the lvl cap and do some of the end game content there is was great for me. wich you could do in the time and price a single player game would cost.
I'm thinking I want to try it out and want some opinions before I jump into it.
For you guys (and ladies) who have played it, what did you think?
Like the first responder my opinon has been developed by the games release and some things may have changes but I thought it was a great game for an offline/console experience great graphics thought the power builds were ok and the action fast paced.
I just couldn't see how they justify charging a subscription fee for what you got community was non existent and alternate activities simply didn't exist. For me these things are necessary to ask for a subscription fee so I moved on.
At the end of the day it may be a good game to pick up if you expect to just find something to occupy your time for a month or two or even to familiarize yourself more with the dc roster of characters other than that I don't see what's going to keep someone around.
I re-upped this past week and am having some fun. They do a great job with the stories and I love the feeling of the combat and movement.
I think Sony really missed an opportunity with this game. To me it looks like they could have revolutionized the content distribution system for the comics industry. I wouldn't mind if the item shop contained digital comics. They could have streamed trailers or even movies at virtual theaters. I think STO could have done the same type of thing - which they are to a point with episodes - but they missed the boat on obvious things such as having missions delivered 'On Screen' or even to be able to keep your ship moving while you were inside.
DCUO missed the mark in depth. Heroes usually have alter egos, vehicles and places to hang out. There is no 'living' in DCUO, it is set up more like an arcade game. I guess that's part of the casual 'revolution' though.
On a side note - who else was there that night that LiF set up a boundry outside of one of the police stations? It turned into a major war with pretty much the whole server joining in. That was a w e s o m e. Probably the most fun I've had in an MMO ever.
[edited "The heroes have" to "Heroes usually have" - it implied that those features (housing, vehicles) are in the game, but they're not]
Alright, everyone. I took the dive in and purchased the game. I think that the powers that are there are fun, interesting and easy to play. I wish that there was more emphasis on the power build and less on building your weapon set. I was happy that you were able to pick up extra abilities in your movement area so that I would not have to put more points into a weapon I didn't want to use. Still, while there are two builds to chose from in each power set, the choices didn't seem incredibly varied and it would be nice to see more power sets added.
The game looks great and the powers are fun to look at when you are using them. Everything is fairly balanced, and gameplay is more action-paced which is great for the genre.
There are virtually no other players in the PC version, so I can't see myself playing the game for more than two months unless the developers decide to combine servers (as was the case for Aion).
I do like the game. I like the characters that I have made so far. Overall though, I wish more effort had been put into the writing, customization of powers, and overall world. I think that the writing and builds were more impressive in Champions Online. I don't feel like I'm being sucked into the story, and there aren't enough players to make PVP or even PVE entertaining. I still like this game more than I have liked other MMOs released in the last two years, but I don't see myself playing it for years unless there are some major additions and improvements.
I like the game, but I definitely haven't fallen in love with it.
Brandles they are merging servers very soon which should help a lot. Update 4 is being released today so now would be a good jumping on point for the game.
Benn playing this game for a few weeks, had never played it before, I can say this is a game that suits me for various reasons.
1st) PvP is what it's all about. EVERYTHING, every achievements is earned to gain advantage in PvP. Yes you have to grind PvE to gain the best weapons for PvP, but then again, you can still hold your own in pvP with noob gear 'cause this game requires SKILL. Having no experience, I randomly picked the 'gimpest' weapon on my only and first lvl 30 character, and even if every seasoned players say brawling isn't a good style, I owned several arena matches (PuG vs PuG of terribad players probably, but still), top dmg and top kills / fewer deaths. In green PvE gear with extra lame weapon, simply because I had a bunch of defensive skills that I used properly, and mixing in with melee combos. But when I fought good premade teams, I really felt like I needed better gear lol. I consider myself a 'good' player in any games, and in this game mashing the right buttons and combos is crucial. I like that.
2nd) This is a game for casuals. I will have a 2nd baby soon and have less and less time to play any video games, but I like MMOs and like to compete, dislike when I have to 'raid', when i have to play 40 hours a week to gain anything, when I have to grind a hundred levels and then have to grind again and again to get anywhere. I love when everybody is more or less on same footing, when the gear isn't winning for you (I look at your WARhammer). Sure in DCUO there's gear to grind, but PvP gear is easily accessible, while the elite PvP gear takes some time, the lesser easier gear to get is like 5% lower in terms of stats and whatnot. The gap isn't too big and you can compete after a few days, takes no time to get the first lvl30 PvP set. pvE is another story though. The best weapons drop in hard dungeons or raids and I despise PvE, but will do it to get them. i'm just like that, if it improves PvP I'll go get it. I suffered to gain almost everything on many characters in WAR, DCUO is a joke compared to that.
3rd) Game has depth. Yes it's for casuals in a sense, but there's also ways to improve your character through completeing feats. Completing feats grants you points, and every 100 points, you get a skill point. You can then chose to upgrade your weapon combos, movement skills (like special attacks when flying, whatnot) and unlock other weapons. Each of the weapons also slightly increases some stats, like bonuses. All of this customizes your character and at some point, you become an incredible powerhouse if you have the gaming skills. Games don't always revolve around 'grinding, getting a level, grinding different mobs, get a lvl'. DCUO is unique as it is focused on PvP and is pretty balanced.
4rth) BALANCE. I liked GW, I liked WAR (even though unbalanced at times). DCUO is much like GW, balance is very important to the devs. Fights are exciting, nobody instagibs anyone, teamwork wins. Healers, controllers, tanks, they all are important, they all can kill and be deadly, they all can hold their own in 1vs 1 and in teams. SKILL vs GEAR. SKILL WINS. I would play the gimpest char in WAR, a BlackOrc, and make it shine. People thought BOs were free kills untill they met me. In DCUO, melee is weak compared to ranged. I play melee and gonna hand it to them noob ranged fools who think they can tank my combos. Already doing this with my gimped gear. I say melee is weak if you don't know how to counter ranged. Once you close the gap, melee can chain stun, and ranged can chain stun from afar if you stand there like a deer on a highway. But if you suck with your combos you're getting killed, simple. Block - roll - lunge attack - block breaker - combos - powers - power selection (you have to equip 6 powers only, much like GW's 8), what to do at the right time determines the outcome.
They could always improve a few things, like world PvP, no rewards for it, other than the fun of ganking and all the lawls and rage of playing on PvP server. Still, as a low lvl 13 i killed a lvl 30 that was trying to gank my newb azz, I liked it. They just released an update, new stuff to do, and will release a DLC soon, with more content. More things to do. I heard they're working on world PvP. There are a few world PvP events, but most lvl 30s spend their time in arenas since the rewards are faster and easier to get.
Overall I'm not disapointed, like the pvP and the skill-based game. Love the fast pace PvP action. If you're looking for grindfests, go look elsewhere.
P.S. Playing on PS3, population is good imo. Lots of fighting and insta-pop in prime-time and evenings. Can't tell about the day, I'm working.
Guild Wars - Warhammer Online - Now playing DC Universe - PvP all the way
Does anyone have a buddy key they can please give me? Im dying to try the game but cant justify spending the cash for something i might just quit after 2 days.

Though, people asked for more content, and that's what they have been given.
DCU is ever improving it's game. I think you'd enjoy playing it.
For long-term or short, I don't think it matters.
It's good fun.
for a long term no..
but if you want some fun going to the lvl cap and do some of the end game content there is was great for me. wich you could do in the time and price a single player game would cost.
Much appreciated!
Ugh, bought the game last night and quit after 2 hours of playtime. Horrible interface for the PC. Definitely looks and plays like a console game.
