So, I just pre-ordered guild wars 2 from Amazon.com. I'm not sure what the requirements are for something to be listed for pre-order, but it makes me hopeful that it will come out relatively soon. I tried it with SWTOR but could only sign up for an announcement to be mailed to me when the time came. Kind of tells me that Guild wars 2 will be out first. Hopefully beating the '10000 first or guildwars 2 first' thread. If anyone knows the criteria for a pre-order for amazon.com, I would love to hear it. It may give me an idea of when to expect its release. (Or, the announcment has already been made, and I just missed it. In which case I apologize for the thread)

dont think there is any criteria really. Jumpgate Evo was on there for a while I think, the game is basically vaporware now.
online retailers basically put their preorders whenever they feel like it. that doesnt mean the game is anywhere close to release, actually they dont even know when it will release so any date you can see around is pure guesstimation.
its all to lure people into preordering from them instead of from the competence
Lol, it worked in my case then. When I saw a pre-order available I jumped at the chance. I like Amazon.com anyway, but this way I'm locked in and don't have to worry about keeping an eye out. One day i'll see some mail and woot, there it'll be. I wish I could do that with SWTOR. But for some reason they don't have that option yet.

Keep in mind also that you don't know what deals are going to be offered by the different retailers when the game gets a release date and preorders begin to mean something. They'll often have bonus bundles to go along with the game and you'll end up wanting to buy it from somewhere else.
Or not. It's just safer to wait for a release date to be announced and see what deals become available before you commit yourself to anything.
The game has been available for pre-order on sites like Gamestop, as early as last year Summer and yet you believe that because your were able to pre-order the game, it will come out soon. These are the kinds of sites that stuck a November 2010 release date on the game. So what I'm trying to say is that I hope you enjoy waiting like the rest of us, cause all signs right now, point to a Early 2012 release.
Waiting to see if it will be downloadable from the Guild Wars store. Days of the boxed pc copies are over for me.
I would also say march 2012 at the earliest because anet is not going to release it before its truly retail release worthy..
Thats just the way they roll...
Playing GW2..
I don't know so much. Somtime around Nov/Dec is looking very likely, and it's just in time for the Christmas rush. That's what I'm putting my money on, anyway. They're not being forced to do it, but NCsoft has been so patient with them that I think they're pulling out all the stops to try and get it done by them so that it does well in retail for NCsoft. And I can respect that because, to be frank, NCsoft has been brilliant with them. Going by how they've treated ArenaNet alone, I'd honestly say that they're the best MMORPG publisher bar none.
As for me, I'm going to wait for the collector's edition to turn up, and when it does I shall preorder that.
december 2011 or january 2012
mark my words :>
I truly believe that ArenaNet is doing the right thing with this game by creating it and playing it at the same time. I think they're probably finding a ton of bugs and more importantly, getting a lot of gameplay/balance issues taken care of as they go. Some other companies I think plan out the game, code it up, and then in alpha/beta realize how fundamentally unplayable some of their ideas are and then have to overhaul entire classes. I think beta for GW2 is going to be more of a stress test, or discovering the hard to find bugs just due to volume of players.
That being said, it really seems like their tone is saying 2012 to me. Also, according to wikipedia, they were first expecting betas for GW2 in 2008 and 2010, so I'm trying to not get my hopes up.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." -Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
I never pre order anything until they announce it and what deals/items will be where.
It is much likely that GW2 beta will be more of a stress short test, as a matter of fact ArenaNet is already beta testing the game but internally with their QA team(Which I believe they are totally right, people nowadays believe betas are for testing the game to see if they like it or not/will buy it or not and dont actually look for bugs/glitches/exploits and unbalances
I expect that GW2 public "beta" will be very short like a month or less and then you will have the release...
But of course its just predictions

I totally agree with this post. I generally wait and see what kind of deals various places offer for the pre-orders and even with that I usually wait until the company whose game it is says "pre-order now and we'll give you early access/beta access etc".
They must have awesome amounts of hardware. They can figure out software bugs on the game level, but they need to have differenct computer configurations to really test the compatabilty side of things. The beta test will be longer than most think.
To stay on topic, I am waiting to preorder.
Character limits suck!
GW2 has been available for pre-order on the danish store Coolshop.dk for at least a year now. It doesn't mean it's gonna be available soon, it only means that they have determined the price of the product (they promise everyone who pre-order that they'll get it for the price stated when the pre-order was made, just like Amazon).
This is development method called the Waterfall Model. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterfall_model
When one stage is finished they start on the next stage and if something turns out to be broken but is part of the specs they can not fix it, there's no way to go back in this model. Stages are not even worked on at the same time, so if they need to fix the interface for a feature they can not do it because the interface stage has already passed. It's a terrible model and only works on the simplest of projects, like printing out "Hello World" to the screen, and even then you have to know what you are doing if you don't want to screw it up.
Guild Wars 2 uses a different model called the Iterative and incremental model.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iterative_and_incremental_development
This effects all stages of developement, from planning to coding to art to the interface and so on. They can work on as many or as few stages as they want at any time. This effects coding as the developer add a feature, test it, add another feature, test it, and so on. In each feature they may only do a tiny amount of work before testing. This sounds like it takes longer, but it does not, it actually takes much less time to develop a project using this method and gives better results. In the waterfall model you implement every feature and try to figure out which feature is not working as expected at the end. In this model if things stop working correctly you know that the feature you just added caused the problem, and at worst you just take it out instead of trying to work around it's issues.
I preordered Guild Wars 2 in October of 2009! Really only because I needed a game to apply some Amazon discounts on. I got it down to $32.29, which was only selling for $49.99 at the time, so a really good deal.
Anyway, don't know if it'll grant me any priority in getting it first, but one can hope!
To me, there's nothing like wasting an extra $30 on Collector's Edition tin box! I think it adds to the nostalgia and excitement when you have a box you can hold.
Amazon have generally not that much clue. And every time a new MMO releases abot 15 people or so write angry posts because Amazon delivered their games 10 days too late or so. I think I go for pre ordering it later from my local gamestore, at least I can whine to the face to face if they mess things up there.
Unless they announce the beta at Gamescon I am not so sure we will see the game until next year. The game might be in surprisingly good shape and the bta might be short but more than half the year is already gone and we havn't seen any beta date or sign ups yet so I hope we get those soon.
The most interesting thing about how they make GW2 is that the engine were already done 2 years ago when Strain left. Most other companies are working on the engine a lot closer to release, that is what caused so much problems for AoC and WAR.
ANET and for that matter Zombie labs have a very different way to handle making games. All employees play the game they are making 2 hours every day, and when I say all I mean all (possibly except the janitor).
If that makes better games or not is something we can discuss but it do sounds a lot better to me than Activions "We want to take the fun out of making games" idea.
