In this week's Star Wars: The Old Republic column, Mike Bitton takes a look at the recent announcement that BioWare will be... er, making an announcement at this week's San Diego Comic-Con.
An announcement of an announcement? Have we come to that point? A number of our readers balked at the news, and while I must admit I personally found the notion amusing, it was altogether innocuous. I do understand that the hype level for Star Wars: The Old Republic is at a fever pitch, but some cryptic wording to get people buzzing about an upcoming show is really no big deal. The much more fun part is the buzzing itself!

The SWTOR forums pretty much are at a consensus (a few naysayers notwithstanding) that the announcement has to be for the pre-order. Several sites have leaked the same pre-order information, which lends credence to that claim - but of course, until we have the official announcement, everything is just rumor and speculation.
The fact that Bioware hasn't squashed the speculation on the forums is pretty good indication that pre-order information will be rolled out at Comicon.
Like you said though this is just speculation until 3:00 Thursday. Though if I had to place bets...
Well, the SWTOR site is down today. It may be they finally got a higher-up who said "pull the plug" until they could get it all under control. Still, you're probably right.
It was down yesterday as well and really pulling the plug on their site wouldn't get that under control. They could just as easily take down the forums or lock them. While leaving the actual site up since its their best advertising and they want people looking and gettying hyped... with the comic con thing on the way.
Personally I'd say the downtime is unrelated to "getting anything under control" and likely updates for other things.
Perhaps even something to do with tomorrows expected announcement (just my guess).
Not sure about yesterday but today is wensday...they always have maintance..they have for every wensday i can remember. It's usually a couple of hours long. Never means anything though.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
There will be no release date announcement. This was confirmed via a German Moderator on the official German SWTOR forums.
An announcer that announces that there will be announcements made on some later date needs to be slapped. I think it is clear when ppl use the expression ' Dont shoot the messenger' they are not talking about that kind of messenger. These were the messengers that made Kings come up with snakepits and crocodileponds.
The degree of "secrecy" and this childish "I haz secrets but I don't tell, neener neener" has something comical with Bioware and SWTOR. I always found this amusing. Only this time it's really a new level of complexity. Personally, I could not care less were they make their announcement, as long as the substance is good, and not more story-blah blah.

Probably release a release of a release date for a release date.
Anouncement: THIS GAME WILL HAVE A FULLY VOICED STORY.
The forums would turn into even more of a comedy.
Well, I think Mike brings up an interesting point here. This IS comic-con, and maybe thinking of things as expanding the game to the mainstream makes sense here. They wouldn't need to show anything relatively new to do so, they just need to make it playable and enjoyable to bring in potential players.
In that regard, if they are truly targeting those that weren't initially interested, announcing something like a "New PvP Endgame" wouldn't strike those potential customers as very enticing.
HOWEVER, apart from a release date, what WOULD strike some of those fans as exciting, would be the release of the Collectors Edition information, especially if it came with some kind of dramatic comic series, and of course the figurine if what has been shown to be in the CE will actually be there.
A release date may be all thats missing, but I wouldn't fault BioWare for playing to the strength of the convention, and pushing some CE information or something not as game oriented.
And then just before that announcement, they announce that they have to postpone the release of a release date for a release date to a later date yet to be confirmed.
It's Very funny. These devs though have to be carefull of what they say. TOR fans can be scary!
Riots will erupt if they don't get something from BW. It's very fever pitch on those forums right now. Last few days has been the 08 subscribers e-peening with their forum sign-up dates. So childish but funny to watch.
it's gonna be a frenzy if they give release date!. The TOR forums will be down allot this month i think.
ETA......TBA later this year!

.......officially losing my mind now. And YES, I am buying the CE.
While I think the announcement of the announce of the release date is a bit much, a lot of the other secrecy makes sense. If you reveal a new feature in your MMO too far before release, some other games can and sometimes do steal your idea before you get to be the first to have it.
Personally, I'm hoping that instead of a release date they tell us what their new 'twist' is for endgame. They have said it's something never seen before in an MMO.
The idea of announcing the opening of pre-orders is very unexciting to me. Of course you will be able to order the game sooner or later, since it's going to come out at some point.
I don't know if you've heard yet but EA is no longer saying TBD, it's now TBA.
I think I just heard a few faint sounding whistles, I'm wondering if a train is coming this way? hmm....

The announcement will be the release date. The release date is Jan 3 2011.
I wish people didn't act like they were born last week and act like everything is new and shocking!
People send communiqués that they will be making announcements at certain events all the time. Get over yourself.
Wooo hooo time travel . Very cool. I will go back to jan 3 2011 and buy that sucker.
I have to be honest, here. I am one of the people that has been trying to keep from getting too excited about this game. The long lack of a release date and hints about "something" coming up at the next event that turns out to be OMG WE HAVE TALENT TREES is starting to get on my nerves. If the announcement turns out to be NOW YOU CAN PREORDER BUT NO RELEASE DATE OMG I think I am going to break something.

That doesnt make it less ridiculous. I find the buzz about the buzz amusing because of it. It is nothing but hot air and still some people go all 'ooh and aah' over it lol.
