Do you think we should have more next-gen gaming consoles?

We already have a PS3, XBOX 360, Wii, OnLive. We now have a Wii U coming and Sega is on the comeback as well. Do you think that their should be more, but to get gamers to buy through different approaches.

I dont care.  They should stick to their original plans.

Sega may have had boycotted consoles but maybe all they needed was a break to get their stuff together.

Idk about you but i LOVED the dreamcast.

So if Sega decides to join again, I would seriously hope they go and combat wii u even if it releases a year after.

I dont think ms and sony should rush their next gen consoles.  They planned on taking their time on the ones after ps3 and 360 and they should definitely stick to that.  Rushing out to combat Wii U will leave Ps architecture in a mess because they tend to make theirs quite complicated.

As for microsoft with their "advanced pc wit ha different operating system" state will have to take their time on making the deals go especially with searching for the right hardware.  REmember that the GPU and CPU companies will make their bids on who gets to make chips for their consoles.  Sony on the other hand makes their own (iirc)  Rushign the suppliers will cost microsoft quite a bit.

    Is anything you said correct????

Sega didn't "boycott" they lost big on dreamcast, and even the genesis before did horrible, as well as a handheld which no one seems to remember.

Simple put sony used the most effective instance of ghostware or vaporware(pick your term) on them by delaying the PS2 launch and advertising the hell out of it, to destroy sega's console division with users and developers.

Sony doesn't even make gpu's and cpu's they use an nvidia chipset. Microsoft and Nintendo(on the wii at least) both use ATI. I never bothered to check the processor manufacturer or the motherboards etc.

Also  "rushing the suppliers" wouldn't apply because they have to build it as a whole and check for compatibility and build drivers as far as cost goes that proccess is just that process. The only thing that could affect that significantly is negotiation, or their own design.

As far as true next gen console everything is slowly or rapidly migrating to the cloud the whoever gets that right in the long run will win, which prolly isn't possible for a few years.

Nex gen console i see only newly released XBOX or PS4 as new nex gen, not old ones there ancient DX9 limited consoles and WII U already old before launched with old ati card from 2 years ago inside.

Sega Dreamcast 2 would be awesome but i doub it will ever see the light, with all the Sega inhouse developers making awesome games like new SHENMUE PSO SONIC or Skies Of Arcadia and many more great games they made on Dreamcast.

Man, SEGA is a horrible company lately, my opinion is that they had lucky 20 years ago with SONIC, but they didnt repeat it´s sucess again in 20 years lol.

Last games i player from SEGA was horrible as usual, the exception is to Vanquish and Bayonetta, last one in special is one of the best hack n slash that i ever played, but they just had sucess because of the game director who cames from Devil May Cry series.

Anyway i know that SEGA is smart enough to know that they can´t stand a chance with the giants sony PS3 or microsoft XBOX or even the next gen.

I cant wait to buy my PSVITA, that one will be EPIC!!! This december i will have to share my time between PSVITA and Blade&Soul which is the best looking mmorpg game by far!!!

i doubt we will sega release a new console, in regards to their reputation the dremcast did bad commercially but till this day is a fan favourite among enthusiasts for retro games. i bought it on release and it had one killer app at the time soul caliber, really was amazing compared to the ps1 offerings of the time. the ps2 had yet to launch for sometime and it had some bad early games, but later releases and mass 3rd part support along with the dvd functionality made it outsell the dreamcast.

dremcast had quality over quantity and its best were mostly made in house, some standouts were shenmue 1 and 2, crazy taxi 1 and 2, jet set radio, house of the dead, virtua on,metropolis street racer. others i never played but are held in esteem phantasy star online, skies of arcadia, ikaruga, rez, plus they many solid ports of their arcade games like street fighter its daytona games virtua tennis. the dremcast just never caught on in europe and us, although did  well  japan for a few years, it was far ahead of its time with the first console with internet connectivity and browser.

the dreamcast might have been seen as another sega flop like the saturn, so the public stayed away. again the saturn did badly compared to ps1 and n64 but still is regarded as having many classics especially 2d fighters and side scrollers, the virtua fighter series sega rally and panzer dragoon were some of my favourites. sega really were top dog in terms of range and quality in aracde games for the early 3d period which all saw console ports, the virtua fighter series, virtua cop/house of the dead, its racers daytona virtua racing sega rally, virtua on, virtua tennis.

the megadrive/genesis on the other hand did really quite well sold well and made a lot of games varying in quality. it was competing agaisnt the snes for most of its lietime it released a little earlier and wasnt as powerful, but for the most part evenly matched until snes started to make things like starfox which megadrive could not replicate.it saw  lot of classic side scrollers and shooters and rpg's. i think someone said in this thread megadrive/genesis was a fail, not so without the sucess of the megadrive they never would have been able to bankroll the saturn and dreamcast. they could even afford 2 other failed consoles in the megacd and 32x, both were flops in sales, but the 32x did have about 5 very decent games and best home port of doom at the time.

everything after the dreamcast i never played so i will tend to agree will earlier poster they lost their way a lot, i havent heard or read any reviews of any triple aaa sega game in a while ever since they stopped making consoles. they have sullied the sega name with sonic in recent years the swithc to 3d never worked, but there is a hella of a lot more to sega than just a lucky break with sonic games.

anyway more consoles difinitely ,only question is when.

back on topic, went off on a sega rant, i was sega fanboy bought all their consoles.

whats more interesting is microsoft taking out the url  microsoft-sony.com. yes it might be just for some laptop/phone they work together on but recently developers sony/microsoft/nintendo have been making sounds that the whole console business is very expensive and they might start working together in the future. i dont have the quotes but someone from nintendo said in the future they might team up for a console, and some game devlopers have said it might happen.

this would be nice if games were not spread out among 3 consoles, and there was a unified platform. i reckon they will release another round of consoles, but its going to get awfully silly naming them, sony has painted themselves in a corner with ps1/2/3 im not sure people will rush to buy the playstation 4!

of course there is gaming on the cloud, where it would all be streamed to us, but i dont see how they will get over the barrier of bandwidth, im in london and use the uk's biggest internet service provider and they havent upped their speeds significantly in years, unless internet speeds make a great leap cloud gaming cant take off at least mass market, from what i understand services like onlive are limited to 720 resolution and there a noticeable lag.

the only way you can have a 'console' that can contend with PC's is to have one that uses a service much like Onlive.. the biggest problem consoles have, consistently.. is that by the time they have been designed and built.. and then marketed, the tech has moved on.. both the PS3 and the XBOX 360, were using outdated tech by the time they were on sale, they may have been new generation 'consoles' but they were old generation technology.. its why PC games are invariably higher quality than console ones.. .. but.. the downside of Onlive of course is.. you need an internet connection.. and .. you never actually own a game.. i know that i personally couldnt accept those kinds of limitations.. but.. im also the type of person that can't accept console limitations either... the question then is..  can consoles survive as a gaming platform? .. can't afford a decent computer or a ps3/xbox.. a service like Onlive might well prove to be the 'affordable' alternative..  of course.. what happens if Nintendo make their console Onlive compatible... one of Microsofts ..and probably Sony's biggest nightmares would probably be that you could play their consoles signature games, or .. even games like WoW.. on a Wii..   now thats a scary thought..  Wii kiddies playing WoW image

Sega failed mainly becouse of lack advertisement or wrong advertisement like Arsenal soccer club shirt sponsor nobody knew what dreamcast was they wasted 60million pounds on that one.

I remember in holland in everyshop that sold games they had a Sega console ad display but becouse of lack adevertisement on television and magazines mainly ignored or said PSX1 was better it was downfall of the SUPERIOR dreamcast compared to ps1 and 2. It had tons of good games on dreamcast but people should know its out there to buy hehe.

Soulcalibur-sonic adventure- shenmue- Phantasy star Online- Bluestinger-MDK2-Shadowman Daytona USA name but a few superb games and many more. It also had very good online gameplay with games like PSO and QUAKE3. Shame half life never was released on dreamcast it was already finished game bah:(

Still got my Dreamcast that play both EU-US-JAP games with keyboard and posibillity to play on PC monitor.
