basically you are inviting someone to a trial. all P2P MMos have those before they are willing to give a 15-day trial without invitations involved...

It's a bit more than a trial. The program gives the friend a copy of Rift. With a trial, you'd still have to buy a copy of the game to play.
Few things I notice about that... #1 the codes are only given to those people signed up for multi-month subs. #2 because you aren't technically buying the game, I wonder if you don't get a free month and you just start paying the sub after the first 5 days. Basically trading the game cost with the sub cost for the first month and giving a slight discount to friends of the people who have their multi-month subs...
Of course this is speculation, unless someone signs up and sees what the terms are for these accounts it may be different... but either way.. no Rift is not free sadly :P
"They essentially want to say 'Correlation proves Causation' when it's just not true." - Sovrath
Trion seems to be so desperate that they now start to hand out the game for free? The next logical step would be to pay the players i guess...
And STILL, after all the discounts, special prices and whatnot offers Trion has NOT anounced 1mio solid subs. And i suspect they will ever do so.
Sad thing is, with some more depth and possibly a 3rd faction, i can imagine Rift could have had 1mio+ easily already, but they rather cling to the raid, token, gear grind-formula most people are beyond sick of.
It wouldn't surprise me to see Rift turning into some premium F2P hybrid within the next 6month.
Rift is doing alright at present but Trion is at least realistic. They know as soon as SWTOR turns up and then later in the year GW2, and others, then there subs are going to drop drastically. So basically the're trying to get as many people as possible to sign on and pay now while there's no new alternative.
It's smart from a business sense a bit pathetic long term really.

Well, making as good a ROI as possible is one of the MAJOR reasons for this exercise... ^^ But at this point, its looking like GW2 may not launch this year. As for TOR, that will no doubt attract many people, but again, I doubt its going to casuse massive numbers of people to leave Rift (or WoW) forever. From what I've seen and heard its basically WoW with light sabers. ^^ Over all, the demise of Rift, while it may be a fond wish of the haters and WoW fan kiddies, isn't in the cards at this point.
Hmm before they do go F2P, they should consolidate the servers. There are far too many, and I'm sure some are just 'ghost towns'.
I was on one of those ghost town servers believe me.... its crazy that a server is up with 200 level 50s possibly less
See, thats just ridiculous. Just seems that they want to get away with it by using Free server transfers/week but doesn't do well for new players to the game to go into a server with that kind of population.
Releasing 1/4 of what other themepark games offer (and that fourth being the same as in every other game gameplay wise), you can't charge 100% of the regular price as we see. People just don't buy Rift at 49,99 anymore. Period.
If Rift would be a more bigger game (world size, activities...), I would jump into it at once -of course so for 49,99. But reading all these posting of reaching max. level in say 3 weeks and being forced to token/gear grind/daily quest after, i'm afraid the game doesn't offer enough longtime entertainment in it's current state. Playing mmorpgs i'm used to get hooked for years, if i want a 2-3 weeks quicky, i usually pick a shooter instead.
So, with this perspective of playing no longer than about 3 weeks, I would already be out of Rift again before i've even gotten into any other mmorpg in the past. While this is not about investing my money, they can cut the price even harder if they like -as long as Rift is not worth to invest my time, Trion's not going to get a deal with me.
Almost 2 weeks later & I am still seeing Rift Listed under Free MMOs to Play Now! , does MMORPG have some deal with Trion to try & trick people into playing Rift thinking its free..
I'll try to explain some of the confusion. Rift is free 2 play on a trial basis.
That said - they are basically giving the game away at this point. With their box sales and subs Scott Hartsman has already commented on their revenue being the reason they can focus double time on content.
The VP of Trion has stated on the recent rift junkies that the game is doing far better than any of them have predicted and they've been responded as quickly as they can. They will be doing monthly updates, including releasing a new zone by the end of the year. They are focusing on RvR PvP, Solo 50 chained quests/instances, more raids 10-man and 20-man, more warfronts, more skills/abilities/equipments/items/cosmetics. All of this by the end of the year.
The business strategy at Trion is simple - The customers are paying for a monthly service and that service is continual updates and delivering new content and fixing issues as they arise.
They are focusing on the subs, not the purchase of the game itself; which is why they are practically giving it away at this point.
So it's not F2P because there will be a sub. It probably won't be F2P for a while, so I have no idea why this site lists it as such.
There could transition to a RMT expansion/content model that people pay for each month I suppose, but I haven't heard anything about that yet.

Wishful thinking? Some WoW kiddie has infiltrated MMORPG's staff? ^^ More lilely just a mistake.

I just opened my email inbox and got an email from Trion offering RIFT for Free. All I have to do is give them the serial code I got sent.
So Rift is now almost Free
Did you mean the free weekend from last week?

That is not correct.
At the momment for anyone who is refeared as a friend still has to purchase the game after their small 15 day trial.
This is giving away the game, they will not have to purchase the game after their initial 5 dyas. All they will need to do is SUB to the game.
The give away shoudl be in this line.

Rift should go freemium or B2P. This is just a waste of time.

Almost 2 weeks now, Rift still listed in the F2P list.
Guess it must be some sort of bigger "issue" then.
