TERA: The Birth of a Lancer

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

TERA writer Bridget McKenna gives us an exclusive inside look at the birth of one of the game's most revered classes: the Lancer.

People often ask me why I chose to make my reputation with a lance. I suppose I could concoct some heroic tale of my early training, my dedication, how I dreamt of the day I’d be distinguished by my superiors for greater things, but in fact this was never the career I was aiming for. The career I was aiming for was “idler.” My parents, on the other hand, were set on my entering the priesthood. I admire a nice suit of robes as much as anyone, but what kind of self-respecting castanic becomes a priest?

Read more of TERA's The Birth of a Lancer.

Still don't get how anyone can fight with a lance on foot, you certainly can't use it in melee with much success.  I want to lilke this game, but idiosyncracies like this deter me.

I agree Jakdstrpper. I was stoked for this game but with so much on the horizon I'm wondering if I can find the time.

guess that was the next logical step. they went to the max for sword's length allready, couldnt enhance it anymore, so they needed a longer weapon :)

just imagine, if swords (one handed) can  range up to 5 meter or sometimes even more (there are enough mmos with such big weapons out there), how long a lance could be!

anyway, totally agreed on that one. i never liked 13 meter big swords and i dont think i like this one either

Well it's a fantasy game. Not a medieval times game. If it were, I could see how you would be in a position to think that it was idiotic. There are huge monsters... what would you rather kill them with a shortsword or a devistating greatsword the length of your character or even a lance? Of course, it's your opinion. Just remember, there aren't many guidelines in fantasy games, its imagination-driven.

i think i'd actually chose the weapon i'd be able to carry *G*

you know what they say about "long equipment" right? substitution for... well.. you got it i guess :>

If this game doesn't launch before GW2 and SWTOR, it doesn't have much of a chance of making an impact here in the states. You can keep interest peaked with screenies for only so long...

    This.

Every MMO I play is just a placeholder until Guild Wars 2 comes out. I have to admit, waiting for TERA is frustrating. Since it's taking so long to "westernize" the game, I expect big changes given the amount of time it's taking.

  • Entropy14Entropy14 Member UncommonPosts: 675

I am losing interest in Tera as well, with SWTOR, GW , secret world......

I will have to see what is said, and how populated the worlds are, I am sick of playing MMO's in zones with 1-3 ppl in them.

I agree with the others. The wait with no date and the CENSORING of the Elins really makes me hate En Masse. I mean come on. Taking the producer from Aion? He did'nt deal with the spam bots in Aion, but he has the motivation to change the looks of something because it goes against his beliefs?

I dont understand why people want this game to hurry and launch but are fine with waiting it out for games like Star Wars and Guild Wars 2. Afther all these too early mmo releases that we have gotten in the past any reall mmo player should know its best for a game to be completly ready for launch and that a bad launch can totally destroy a mmo. It just sounds stupid when I hear people say if this game does not hurry and release I wont play it.

Its hard to enjoy a game where simple physcis are 'broken' so that someone can carry thier huge epeens in thier hands.

What would make that 'huge monster' more of a challange, or feel like a big accomplisment, defeating it with 'realistic' sized weapons, or somehow managing to 'swing' a weapon 1 1/2 your size, and twice your weight, as if it was a tiny penknife?

Sorry, but i tend to agree with them, tera looks real good, except for the silly-oversized 'belongs in foolish anime' weapons.

I thought this was vaporware .. this article only slightly changes my opinion on that fact.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

Amen to that. There was a time where I would have bought it blindly, now I would have to see lol.

Because releasing before those 2 titles could mean a big difference in box sales for that game.

A LOT more people will try that game if it releases before either of those two titles.

Not to larp on you guys, but a lance isn't a weapon unless couched. It's a impact weapon. This class is  innately silly sounding to me. Lancer on foot... That's like...Why not spears?

    Lances are super super specialized.

    As in mounted combat only.Couched.

Then again it's fantasy, but hell if Game of thrones can get it right, you can.

Lol you just reminded me sephiroth's sword in final fantasy 7(i think?)... was ridiculously long, dunno how he used it

Well, they announce and start to advertize the game too early, about 3 years ago. Another big flaw in the long westernization of the game and the recent bad news (like a weak pvp and pointless censorship), expecially the late year release. They overdone it in so many levels, so much exagerated that a lot of people start to think this game as a placeholder for something else, like GW2 and B&S. More they wait more the challenge will turn into a hard battle considering that GW2 is a B2P game with tons of followers in the west yet.

  • SouldrainerSouldrainer Member Posts: 1,857

This game did look promising, but with what's coming out next year, I don't see how they can afford to not launch it in August.  Do you really think Tera will even fare reasonably well against heavy hitters like SWTOR and GW2?  No.

Pointless censorship?  Did you even look at the Elin videos on the web?  I mean come on, let's be the slightest bit realistic here, it is a very child like race and dressing them like they did is just ridiculous.  I am all for freedom of speech, but the original Elin race design and dress was across the line imo.  There are many that agree with that, why risk major controversey and fix the problem?  Grats to en masse recognizing an issue and correcting it.

If they only censored Elins, I'd have to say that was a good call.

Is that all they censored, though?

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
