Installing DoTA?

smokey1223smokey1223 Member Posts: 23

Hi everyone, I have been trying to setup and install DoTA but the guides i have found are like reading hieroglyphics. If anyone has an guide or link to a guide it would be appreciated, Just FYI I'm using win 7, and have noticed that i have to add things to my existing game folder. I do own Warcraft III pack and have played alot of private servers so i have an idea of how to do things of this nature. But for the purpose of this thread lets pretend I;m fresh off the boat and have no idea what im doing. Thanks in advance for your help!

Basically DoTA is a sub game in Warcraft 3. It is a user created map, for online multiplayer. You go online in warcraft 3 TFT and you find a game hosting dota, the second you join one, you will end up getting the map straight from someone else in the game. Unless you want to manually go online and find the map files download, and put it into your warcraft 3 maps folder. DoTA isn't it's own game, it's just a user map.

well that explains why i couldnt figure it out. I was referred to diff sites as if it was it own sperate game mod. If it is as simple as entering a map with no file changes thats good news. I guess now its just time to try and find one! Thanks again!

ok well i still run windows XP but this is what i did:

download wc3 + frozen throne, install normally (can be found on pirate bay if you know how to use poweriso or another program to mount an image file)

then go to getdota.com, download the latest map, and put that file into your wc3/Maps/Download folder

most people play on garena, go to this site and download their client http://intl.garena.com/~client/

there is a guide on how to use their client there so you can find out how to play there.

Yeah, it's referred to as that because of how huge it got. Most MoBA games are based around DoTA. League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, and games like that are all based off of DoTA. I don't remember what started it all though, I think it was a starcraft map.

This is basically liek the guide i found, but I wasn't sure if it was official. I didn't want to get infected before double checking. While I'm sure this is useful to start my own game, I think I will just join one and see how it goes.

Just join a dota game on warcraft and play, no need to download all this other stuff which could be filled with who knows what.

The SC map is called Aeon of Strife that inspired dota.

if you think garena is a virus then i don't know what to tell you.  if you try to join a dota game and download the map you'll likely get kicked by the host because they wan't want to wait for you to load.

i'm not sure how many people play on battle.net anyone as far as DotA goes, but garena there is always at least 50k people online.
