As the title states. Would you play a purely pve game with maybe 1-2 pvp servers that were a sideshow gimick for the players who wanted it like everquest?
The reason I ask is because I think pvp is slowly killing off the RPG factor in the MMORPG because every class needs to be built the same and be balanced for pvp. There is very little variation between what one class can do and another cannot. This post could also go into group interdependence and how not every class should be able to solo easily but I don't feel like going there but I want to know if you would play a pve only game.

yes i would i got bored of pvping.... i mean yeah you kill him get points and braging rights and stuff but it all depends on the person whos playing do they really like pvp or they like pve every one likes different flavors in games pvp is not dying its just people prefer not to pvp i dont know why maybe its not there thing to pvp like, i used to in alot of mmos i played. but it all just depends on the person i mean i cant call the pve person a carebear maybe its not for him or her whos playing the game. every one has different enjoyments of games..
.....
I'm probably in the minority - but I'm tired of PvP being in mmorpgs. To me, it's a lazy way to have content. I'd much rather developers spend the time on perfecting smarter AI and making a game more open to continuous updates. But meh, it seems this world is bent on competition as the only driving force to live.
Yes I definitely would..
I love EQ and Vangaurd and still play them both.
That said,I also like pvp,if its the right kind.Daoc/Planetside style pvp is my favorite,I can live without the instanced style pvp.
.....
Now to get this out in the open, I'm not a PvP person so much. I like tiny doses of it, every now and again, but I'm a PvE player at heart.
I enjoy challenging PvE, but if the game has mediocre PvE, then it sort of needs that something else (PvP in most cases comes in here) to add the fun factor or just to add to the list of things to do in the game.
To be honest, I think a lot of games are already like this - PvE focused, with bits of PvP shoved in there. That is the mould that has been set. Maybe it needs breaking, maybe it doesn't. For some people, it will - personally, it needs re-moulding and would be better to keep on PvEing games up.
Put through the personal paces of my crippled fingers.
I already do. I play Lotro. Monster play is kind of pvp but, i have never heard a dev or a player say any class has or needs to be changes for pvp. In other games it is a constant problem. To me this is the main strength of Lotro, not have to change Pve to make the pvpers happy.
Yeah, in fact I'd prefer it. That way devs wouldn't nerf classes every 5 seconds. I never like pvp or even death match games. I prefer having fun, not getting frustrated all the time (which is what 99.999% of all hardcore pvpers feel when pvping unless they are winning). When playing co-op its much more enjoyable.
I will admit however that open world pvp has an up side for non-pvpers. When people try to pk me in games like city of heroes or conquer online, or mu online, i always end up supprising them and myself by getting them instead. But if they do PK I get upset, because some jackass just determined what happened on my screen.
Overall pvp isnt a terrible thing, but its not that great either. But yes, I'd enjoy a pvpless game
In most of my exp PVP so brings out the best in and of people... I know it does in me.... did not care for NGE changes in SWG but untill they closed my server i would go back to gank people and be cheap in the battle zones when ever they gave me free time. I see no pvp as a selling point.
PvP is one of the biggest factors in current MMOs being broken and unplayable.
Balancing classes/skills/powers/gear for PvP ussually fails and leads to flavor of the month builds and constant nerfs/buffs that hurt the community.
PvP has brought the E-peen clowns to MMO's and the general nitwits that think people are somehow harder to kill than anything a programmer can come up with.
PvE content can be incredibly harder, faster, and more complex if devs want it to be.
lastly, PvE content is co-op well PvP is antagonistic.
I am all for PvE only games at this point.

Few years ago, you'd have seen a lot more people saying they need PvP. Now, it's been so long since we've seen the release of an MMO with decent PvP, it's just like, **** it, screw PvP, at least get the PvE right.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
ive always preferred pve games.
yet in the back of my mind, the idea of FFA pvp also in interesting .. in an ideal situation .. but that can never exist apparently .. ive at least never been able to fathom it.
there is something appealing about being the true rogue. with chaotic evil alignment .. shunned in towns.
but then theres the ganking and corpse camping that I wouldn't play for more than 1.23 seconds.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
Unless its DAoC2 i could care less if any new MMO has any PvP. Like many have said allready trying to ballance classes constantly tens to ruin a game.
I only PVE in MMORPGs.
I only PVP in true PVP games.

I would prefer most fantasy mmorpgs that are like Everquest and it's progenity to be PVE only. Why? Not only will the developer likely screw up the PVP system, but they will likely screw up much of the rest of the game when they try to incorporate the crappy PVP system. World design, balance between the classes, end game, etc, are all likely to be wrecked by the incompetent developer trying to provide players with some PVP.
Not to mention PVP instancing is completely unimmersive.
I prefer games that don't even have the option to PvP. I understand that there are things to enjoy about a PvP-centric game, but it can't coexist with quality PvE. It is used as a tool for griefing, and tends to introduce balance issues among the races, classes, and builds (and makes balance issues more important since players are fighting each other directly rather than competing in a contest against AI).
For me, a viable MMORPG should offer PvE only or PvP optional servers as a default. If they also support PvP servers or optional PvP, that's fine by me. Force PvP as the only choice? Forget it, not interested and subscriber numbers of games that have tried seem to prove it's a bad idea if a game wants to succeed.

No. I've tried but just cant do it.
Polls like this are silly. Everquest had over 500,000 subscribers at one point and was almot entirely PvE as was FFXI.
That said, I think that in this day and time, I think it's rather dumb not to include "some" form of PvP, most probably battlegrounds, but I hate world PvP. To often, when people say they like world PvP, they're just looking for an excuse to gank people.
A good game doesnt need PvP involved at all and can easily be played without any at all, the idea of players fighting players seems counter productive in most cases, and developers like to just throw in faction fighting to give it a reasoning that it happens.
As a player of table top games for over a decade its very easy to play a game without PvP, Players are there to work together against a common enemy, and if Developers would make bosses or just creatures in general with real tactics or AI of any sort then PvP would never be needed. Honoestly I'd love to see a game where the bosses are ran by DMs live so that they are dynamic and challenging, not just have some strategy that has to be used because they have so many abilitys that they use on certain timers and craplo like that.
Mess with the best, Die like the rest
I play a game to play THE GAME. PvP has it's place and some people seem to enjoy it, although me experience with it was along the lines of attack someone 10 levels below you or the traditional gank fest.
I think there are enough twitch games to keep the PvP crowd happy
Yes I have finally given up on my dream of a good PvE game having decent PvP. I'm now playing EQ2 for my PvE and EVE for my PvP and do not see anything changing that anytime soon. Just about every MMO I have played in the last 10 years builds a foundation for either good PvP or PvE then tries to tack the other element on as an afterthought.
I have and I would, but for how long is another question... if they have no PvP they better have some VERY interesting other end game activities if they want me to stick around, and raiding doesn't cut it.
For a while I enjoyed playing a Ranger in AOC and becoming invisable and ganking someone but it became old fast
thank you everyone for the discussion and view points. It was worth the read
I'm an avid PVPer but even i would play a game with only PVE. I can get my PVP fix from any number of mmo's so one where i can just log on and have at it with some crazy hard AI's would be fun. How about a game with an AI faction instead of PVP that could be interesting as well. I definitly like the idea of being able to have a character without getting nerfed to holy hell
