I really hope this game doesn't let people down. I am still very much on the fence with this one though. In all honesty I hope this game is what people have been waiting for. I've decided to wait and see how it all pans out after release.
Every single fantasy mmo has built on whats gone before it . WoW built on games like Everquest and was called an Everquest clone before its release . I'm guessing you've proberbly only been playing mmos since WoW was released so naturally everything will seam like a WoW clone to you but what your really refering to is a genre. For instance first person shooters pretty much all have similar basic game play in various settings but no one still refers to them as Doom or Quake clones any more because they know to do so would make them look foolish .
What you should be asking is StarWars the Old Repbubic fun ,playable and polished and does it have some degree of challenge . WoW offers only challenge to the most casual and novice gamer now ( a little end game content and pvp arenas and battlegrounds aside ) .
If going out and killing x amount of mobs etc is something that you find unacceptable in a new mmo I would suggest either trying something totally different like EvE or giving up the mmo genre altogether because nothing thats going to be released in the next decade or two will be acceptable to you .
There are only so many ways to lay out a mmo, I don't know why people can't get this through there head, if you really think about it go back to everquest and any thing that came after it was an everquest clone. WoW was NOT the first mmo out there fairly far from it actually. It was just the first one to appeal to the mass market and the kiddes.
As another poster said every mmo builds on the ones that come before it, in fact every product does this, just look around, how many cars do you see look almost identical, how many consoles look almost identical ? soaps ? ipad like devices ? ALL of them no matter who makes them look alomst not exactly but almost identical. get over it.
blabla wow clone blabla.... how can it be a wow clone... seriously.
it does not have orks or elves, it does not have axes and mages, it does not have orgrimmar or UC.....
is every shooter a doom clone for you guys? seems like it.
Of course not, Thane, don't be ridiculous. They are all Wolfenstein 3D clones!!! I'm so sick of people acting like Doom was the first FPS blah blah blah yammer yammer yammer babble babble babble, drool.

This is actually not true. Think about it, would you say the same thing about all multiplayer games? Multiplayer games span every genre of game that exists, and some are even creating new / hybrid genres of their own. The only difference between a multiplayer game and an MMO, is scale and the fact that is requires an internet connection.
MMOs aren't nearly as limited as most players are currently led to believe. Ever see someone accuse second life of being called an MMO? What about Eve, Wizardry Online, All Points Bulletin, Word of Tanks? Some games are trying to break out of the classic model, some more successful than others.
I hate to break it to ya, especially because of the amount of Stigma attached to it, but SWTOR (for all the coverage and info that I've seen) is a WoW Clone of sorts. It is based off of the same model that Everquest created. It may not have elves, or orks, or dragons, but it doesn't need to. It still has the same type of themepark setup, the same types of classes (the holy trinity). That being said, it DOES have very distinct differences. It is trying to do some new things (cover mechanics, more hybrid class heavy, more directly story driven).
It's definitely not the same game, it does have it's own charm, it's own features. However it is based on the same model as WoW was.
Given the very limited previews that Bioware has done, either they're playing ti really close to the vest for no apparent reason or they have a lot ot hide. I'd also like to hear if they plan to nerf endgame content every 2-3 months like Blizzard/TrionWorlds. I'm not sure that I want to be on the poop sock / bleeding edge just so that I can play through challenging content.
Preview weekends...
1/ It's a marketing tool - not a beta. Very little "testing" gets done by players in the honeymoon period.
2/ Why the restricted beta access? We have seen this before... and it hasn't ended well... ever.
I would like to believe Bioware can get this right - but I have more doubts than ever.
3. More you complain about WoW Clones, the more addicted you are to WoW in first place..
Enjoy the Games for what they give, not for what other ppl complain about all the time, take the time to become your own hero and tell the Trollz to get a Bloody Life..
well, lets see if one can get to test and then influence me to leave what 2 games i am currently playing (but am bored of) for this one. I made a decision that i would not jump into anything new unless having tried it beforehand (way too many shoddy and utter rubbish) has been thrown out at us consumers these past few yrs that i have kinda lost faith in the developers thesedays.
A name does not cut it, hype for a game before it actually release's means absolutly jack diddly (in fact these games usually turn out to be the worst release to date) alias why i have not even bothered reading much about this one yet. So a series of trial/test weekends is a good start. All one can do is wait.
This game is dead to me, no southern hemisphere (or red zone as it is now called) release for 6-12 months. GTFO !
For a game all about storyline seems moronic to release in limited areas so those players can spoil the storyline for everyone who is waiting to play.
I guess EA & Bioware just went Full Retard.
Er... I am not sure that is official from EA / Bioware? If it is - please link.
What I just read (Official) said that Aussie players can still purchase via digital distribution (no IP Blocking) which makes sense.
But, this concerns everyone, because past history has shown that games companies delay release in Australia for one main reason...the game is not ready for retail release and our consumer laws could be a problem as a result.
Technically there is no reason why games cannot be released in Australia at the same time as the rest of the world. But legally, if the game is overly buggy and / or does not ship with the features advertised then it breaches Australian Law (Trade Practices Act) and can be returned for a refund.
So, I am always very suspicious of any game that doesn't release here simutanously. Its a definate 'red flag' that something is not right or that the publisher is not sure if the game will be ready to ship in a 'retail release' state.
In the case of SW:TOR the second glaring red flag is the limited 'beta' schedule. What was the last game that did this? Was it STO?
So, that's two red flags already.
Now, I am sure the people over at Bioware are working overtime to get this project up and running and ready to go by the deadlines they have. And II am sure they want to release a polished product up to their own high standards. All credit to them.
But I also think Bioware might be realising that there is a bit more to this MMO thing than they initially thought.

Not accurate in any way. Websites like that pretty much just throw darts at a calender to choose a supposed release date.
If they are doing beta weekends in September, I predict September - November release date. Just in time for Christmas.
Preview weekends are always awesome. I'll be fine with a November release, that ,means more Space Marine and Dead Island game time while waiting.
Hehe
The following statement is false
The previous statement is true
Also looking forward to skyrim, but since its singleplayer only i think i will wait bit longer with it and get it on sale after a few months
So we have Swtor,Skyrim and possibly Diablo 3 and maybe a little later Gw2.
But guess what we dont have time
So we are closing in on the stress test phase... Good good
This have been a good conversation

one more thing, if you don't like the game don't play it. no one will miss the negative whineing.
Hope will live up to hipe ... and I love theme. For now I'm very happy with my Wow and Rift ... if another will join the top I'm all pro.

BETA TESTER
SWTOR
1. It's Nothing like World of Warcraft..
2. WoW Don't have Space Combat, Tisssss..
3. More you complain about WoW Clones, the more addicted you are to WoW in first place..
Enjoy the Games for what they give, not for what other ppl complain about all the time, take the time to become your own hero and tell the Trollz to get a Bloody Life..
On a added NOTE..
This reminds me of Tabula Rasa and Starwars Galaxies combo..
Tabula Rasa will Rise Again!
Starwars Galaxies will rest in peace at the end of the year when SWToR opens..

According to what i have read... neither does SWTOR.
Isn't it 'on rails'? Hardly 'space combat'.

I sorry for your lack of patience, most of us here have waited for SWTOR since '08, and they will release before 2012..
This Co-Insides with Starwars Galaxies Shutting down with SOE.. since Lucas Arts owns it..
This could also mean they might employ the Staff that currently run SWG *speculation* and boost more expansion output to keep everyone on their toes..
Storyline - Did you not read the DEV blogs or Watch the Movies from DEVs?
1. You can SOLO it, w/o doing any storyline..
2. You Group with others and still not do the Storyline.. " EPIC ! "
3. SWTOR will be World Wide, that was specific..
4. Don't blame BIOWARE, they're going through rough times with the US Market in Dire-Straights.
Specially when ppl they don't buy the games and use SkidRow or Torrent Hacks.
(NOT looking for TROLLERz)
