Honestly aside from some sub par RTS games and for me personally City of Heroes (just couldn't get into being a super hero) nearly all the games I've purchased have been worth it. For a list of some of the ones that I remember fondest, EQ, SWG, Vanguard, STO, NWNights 1 & 2, ME 1 & 2.
For MMOs, Mortal Online, STO, CO, and WAR. Each has its critics, but each was/is a lot of fun for me. If I was to pick the top one, it'd be MO, because it provides a style of gameplay that can't be found in most other games.
I don't play a lot of other computer games anymore, but I'd like Out of the Park Baseball, any of the Space Empires series, TES, Sword of Aragon, and Darklands.
The vast majority of games I have purchased have been well worth what I paid. I also purchase most of my games on sale.
I agree: The best bang for your buck is when the buck = 5$. :P.
Well, there was this one game on the NES that flat out sucked. I don't remember if I bought or if it came with the system. That game was Burger Time.
"I used to think the worst thing in life was to be all alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel all alone." Robin Williams
Pretty much any SNES game, Tony Hawk for the playstation. Phantasy Star Online! EQ1, EQ2, and WoW were pretty much the main games I got my playtime out of. Oh yea, and Dance Dance Revolution.
For MMO's it can only be World of Warcraft. Not my first, but by far my favourite...no game has ever consumed so much time and money on my part!
Single Player, it has to be the Championship Manager series (before it become Football Manager)...the only game that can come close to WoW for time and enjoyment invested.
RIFT! Most fun I have had since World of Warcraft ..before they retardated it. If RIFT had of came out before World of Warcraft I would prob not have even played WoW. Along with probably everyone else for that matter.
Hey, if you're dividing hours_played by game_cost for "worth it", you get a #DIV/0! error from F2P games! It's some kind of cosmic code!
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
The Orange Box. 4 of the best games I've ever played for the cost of less than one. Specifically, Team Fortress 2 is one of the best balanced class-based PvP games I've ever played. And so many options.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Hands down FFXI, no matter what anyone thought of that game I accrued actual years in playing time. It's kinda sad at times really, but dollars vs hours played and enjoyed nothing comes even remotely close to that game and probably never will. At this point in my life it just isn't possible to play that much.
Every single game I ever bought was worth it. That's why I bought them.
Pretty much this. I buy games I already know I like. I think the real spirit of the OP's question, however, is asking what our favorite game is. For me that answer is a virtual 10 game tie among the various Final Fantasy titles. If I had to pick just one though, I'd go with FF9 followed closely by FF7 then FFTactics.
When I think about significant video game purchases, Pokemon Red/Blue comes to mind. I was 12 when they came out back in '96. I had 2 friends who played them. One was generous enough to let me borrow his gameboy and play it for a few days. I was enthralled. I simply had to save up money to buy my own gameboy color, which I did after about a month. The 3 of us would compete and battle against each other, then we'd work together to "catch 'em all." It was totally worth it.

MMO goes to SWG but that was 6 years ago.
Single player goes to Elder Scrolls 4 and that was a while ago too.

FFXI and WOW
DAoC, WoW, Eve, UO were worth Buying
Asheron's Call, FF11 online, Diablo series, Call of duty(Original), oh and orginal Age of empire.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

Ha! My dad loves that game...for some reason. >.> But ya, I buy all my games on sale too, so they're all worth it for what I paid.

Master of Orion.
Master of Magic .
Master of Orion II.
Those were the days!
Every 4x game after that sucked.
Have a sense of humor, no need to get ALL MODDY ! A Simpson's quote shouldn't be worth a warning. You are lucky anyone is bothering to read this rag.

Heroscape :P Reason being is .... It brought years of enjoyment and when I sold it all, I made a hefty profit :P
As far as MMO's go.....
Since UO the only game I stuck with for very long was FFXI. So UO or FFXI, the rest.... well they were ok had some fun but meh.
There is definitely more than one, but my favorite was probably Baldur's Gate 2. The best video RPG I have played in over 30 years of gaming.

Red Dead Redemption
Bought it after being goaded by a bunch of people at the game store that it was "amazing"
It was all that and more, and more than that - it is an alarming look into the way I imagine GW2 will end up playing.
People think it's fun to pretend your a monster. Me I spend my life pretending I'm not. - Dexter Morgan
AION... Assassins Creed, Star wars TFU,
...... Rift I guess was worth it, just not worth my sub every month.
