I think this is a fair, if somewhat bare-bones article. I would have prefered a more in-depth (non-numerical) review of features but it does touch on many of the high-points someone already familiar with UO would want to know about the "current" game.
I never liked UO myself. I found the interface awkward, the PK excessive, and the random placement of houses all over the place drove me a little crazy (this is from memory so it may not have really been that bad). The flexibility of skills was a nice feature for someone with a large MUD-ing background, but I just couldn't get into the game and went back to my non-graphics MUDs (especially the old Wheel of Time MUDs... used to love them).
Then Everquest came out and my love with MMORPGs really began....
I've heard it one of the best mmos ever as well as one of the first, but future games most likely increased the time commitment for daily grinding and other time consuming investments with little payback.
Did they take out house decay? I would think there shouldn't be so many vacant houses if that is still in place.
I only quit because of the scrolls that were about to be put in place to exceed your skills beyond 100. I would play if I could get a shard that only went up to when Lumberjack Warriors were introduced. I know this would mean Trammel would be in place, which I never went to, but I had a lot of fun with my lumberjack warrior. So I guess even more perfect would be to have that and remove Trammel.
UO is the best MMO on the market to this day. It provides a unique experience that no other MMO can. If you're tired of the same thing with every game, try UO. It may take you a while to get involved, but once you do, there's enouch content to keep you busy for 10+ years.
Great Article. UO is definitely my favorite MMO. EQ did come in second when it was released. There is nothing like being in a world like Britania. Some of it is nostalgia, but not all of it. I've been able to get the same feeling from some other sandbox games for a while, before it shattered from sloppy implementation and stuff like that. I will never lose hope for a new world similar to what Britania was. I think the key ingredient for me really is the freedom to do what you want and non-instanced player housing and fun crafting / Good skill system. Here's to hoping we see this again some day!

UO is an amazing world with amazing possibilities and people ! So much so that I've made a UO inspired scream metal album! It's now up and available for FREE DOWNLOAD at http://inred.bandcamp.com .
The title is "Serpents Hold". The story is of a young rogue who finds a sacred artifact, granting him the power to control minds! Follow the lyrics to find out what happens next!
Many cheers and thanks to all in the UO community that I'm so proud to be inspired by!
They really need to port this to Android and iOS. I know the hardware can handle it now. My Sensation 4G is probably faster than the PC that I was using originally, and of course, the wireless speed is much faster than my 56K modem. With the influx of new people gaming on mobile devices, this could renew the excitement of UO all over again.
played UO for a long time .. it was great in its day ... i know the game isnt dead because of all the features and freedom....to my point quickly thought is fel is dead and only trammel remains ..... for those that dont know .. trammel is a safe haven ,, no pvp ,, just pve .. sorry but boring .. was a great game though
UO was my first MMO and nothing has come close to it since I quit...
These quest based MMO's are all the same, boring gameplay and cheap thrills; You level up, get more stats and eventually max your character... It's thoughtless, mindless and I don't get how people find it fun.
Still play free servers on and off but it's not like it was back in the day. Here's to hoping Archage can pick up where UO left off...
Sadly for me comming back to UO isn't an Option. It's not that I don't like the direction it's taken or that I can't deal with the graphics anymore or anything. It isn't even because of the tram/fel split. The reason is I played UO for over a decade lol. I lived in the world of Sosaria for way, way to long to ever go back. I loved my time in UO, but after so long I just can't go back, no matter how much changes in Sosaria I still feel like I've been there and done that.
If there were a new UO built on the same core principles with a new world, it wouldn't even need good graphics to get me standing in line with my money waving in the air. But as it is, I just can't go back. Many great memories though.
Yes.... I still remember the name of the world in UO lol. Even if it was shattered.
I'd go back if it was how it was in 1998 or so. I have tried the demo from time to time recently and I can't say that I'd recommend anyone playing at this point. It's just not the same and it is very aged. Only if it went back to its roots.
I often wonder what some of these old games would be like, population-wise, if they didn't have hundreds or thousands of updates and numerous expansions that morph the game completely. Save bug fixes and obvious exploits, I wonder if the games would be more popular in their original form. Perhaps not zero updates or expansions, but less than half, and without the highly controversial ones.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
What's keeping EA from making an UO2 from the ground up? I doubt it would be a flop just from watching activities in mmo forums. People are begging for a polished sandbox mmo. In a pessimist analysis it would at least have a loyal following just like EvE.

I think EA has shifted a good bit of the Mythic team over to Bioware to work on TOR. They probably don't have anyone with enough passion or yearning to make it.
Seriously, though, this game is still god damn amazing for all of the mechanics they've screwed. I'm fine with the graphics, for the most part the 2D (not the 3D) art still holds up surprisingly well, and the variable manner in which items could be used on your paper doll still has yet to be matched by another MMO, as far as character customization goes. It's really hard for me to play current MMO's and not think back upon all of the things UO did right, and still does right, that this recent batch of MMO developing morons can't seem to grasp. Really? It's hard to understand that players want tons of character customization, skill customization, and world customization?
This thread just makes me sad, because it reminds me of all the shit (and I mean asbolute SHIT) we have to play compared to the UO that came out in 1997. Sorry guys, but it's true.

I didn't get the net til 99, and UO was my first foray into online gaming almost straight after buying a modem.. What a ride..
Within a couple months I had purchased a second phone to be able to play it with my brother and we lost inordinate amounts of hours harvesting, dungeoning, and eventually both Gm'ing
When too many patches started to affect the gameplay, moved to free shards for a while to get the old "feel" including Novus Opiate Seclorum and more, and recently, UOGamers:Hybrid
My first MMO love. . . . .
Garriott needs to return to his roots and get a sequel rolling with the emphasis on the gameplay THEN graphics, Not the other way round. Many would thank him for it

Actually UO developers admitted that they 'stole' the AOS features from Diablo ... so it is definitely Blizzards fault!
When i think that they are killing this game over and over since 15 year, and it doesn't want to die...

Yeah, that's the most amazing part of it all. They've had more than just a couple blunders that should have sank the game but it still persists.

A 15 year old game with 2.5d graphics is getting old? Gasp

UO does not exist anymore. The game that calls itself UO today, is a walking corpse, mocking the original.

She took my Virginity. There is always, and forever, a special place in my heart for UO.
