I've never played vanguard, mostly because it's old and has a very low population, but one of the things I actually liked about it is the lack of updates. Any updates (bug fixes aside) will likely just make the game more like WoW, I fear. I voted no.
That's kind of a concern I have going forward.
I mean, look at everyone who has a favorite game. At some point the devs go to a place where players don't want the game to go to and many people say they eventualy ruined it.
UO, EQ, DAoC, EVE, Lineage 2, LOTRO and I'm sure the list goes on.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Add SWG to that list. It was made for that list, hah.
Played: SWG, SWG:NGE, EQ2, Vanguard, LotRO, WoW, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Mortal Online, Rift, Guild Wars, Fallen Earth, EVE Online, Ryzom, Dungeons and Dragons Online, World of Tanks, Aion, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2
If Vanguard is 'too old' then so is city of heroes, DDO, Guild Wars, EQ2 and WoW, because they are all older than VG.
Also I am forced to wonder if people mean 'lagging' or 'hitching.' Either way Lagging isn't SoE's fault since I seriously doubt the servers are stressed, and for me I don't get any hitching because I actually play on a gaming PC. Seriously if you can't run a 5 year old game I hope you don't plan on playing SWtoR or GW2 on that machine lol.
Personally my favorite aspect of VG is that they did classes RIGHT. I'm particularly partial to how they did Rangers. Even when I made alt characters for other classes I found each one of them interesting opposed to other games that simply depend on you picking the role you like in a group for satisfaction. Loved how they balanced classes too, really quite simple. they made them all OP. If content needed certain amount of healing, defense or offense to complete, all the classes were easily capable of doing it. You didn't need a certain tank class, certain healer or certain DPS to do things, any of them would do.
The people who created VG 'on paper' were brilliant (save for drugged up Brad McQuaid), too bad it didn't get good followthrough.
I'd love to come back to Vanguard as long as I could play it the way it was meant to be played by taking advantage of all the group content and dungeons rather than hopping all over the game world scouring for what few soloable quests I can find at level 35.
If there were enough people to play with I would play. It is an amazing and rich game, but like others have said, after they got their shiz together most players had split. If there was a decent population I would come back. Their dungeons throughout the levels are freaking great....but I can't do a level 20 dungeon by myself. lol.
Why would they keep long term plans for Vanguard? They'll not have this still going by the time Everquest Next is out as that will be a huge smealess world on a much more advanced engine built for huge zoneless words with physics built in. Mark my words VG will go the way of SWG once EQN is slated for a release date. SOE will not have this game getting in the way of EQN imho. SOE want to push on with its new era of MMO's on its new MMO engine and VG will feel a bit dated to the next gen SOE seamless world MMO of EQN a thempark sandbox hybrid.
I still have not used my free 45 days. Why you ask, it is simple. Nothing has changed, nothing is going to change.
Show me where they are actually working on it, and not some mouthpiece of the company trying to pull the wool over your eyes so you continue playing.
I want to see some concrete notes that they will be doing this, this and that. Otherwise those comments were all a smokescreen just to keep folks on the bandwagon.

No worries. This time I belief they will do it. For the most simple reason: Station Pass.
For many people Station Pass was only viable regarding EQ1, EQ2, SWG (and to some extend Vanguard).
As DCUO failed misserably on the PC version and is practically dead, it doesn't reall add any value to Station Pass.
Now SWG gets shut down by the end of this year... and you can see that Station Pass is starting to run dry and losing it's value quickly. Eventho they lowered the price two months ago.
So for now.. the main focus for them on current live PC games will be EQ1, EQ2 and Vanguard (and some extend DCUO...altho PC players have already given up on it).
So no... I think SOE is coming around and really is going to be working on Vanguard again. They will have to.
I would only come back after seeing what the updates are. I loved Vanguard. I would love it if they either sold the game to a company who cares about the game, or moved to a f2p model.
I abstained from voting - a promise and confirmation are worthless, especially coming from SOE. If they are serious, then they will invest in a nice update upfront as a good faith measure. Only then will I give Vanguard a go.
Thank you for all the replys, I hope something fruitful comes out of this as SoE has to see to potential for this game, even if its a small profit, it is worth taking in my eyes. Those who will not return, I completely see your point, it's too bad SoE fudged things up when the time was ripe (should have let Sigil have another year or so before launch).
Same playing from England and never really felt the usual Euro-ghost town job that you find elsewhere, provided you're on in the evenings. When I'm being a pratt and logging on at 11AM with a coffee cause I've nowt else to do till uni starts up again then yeah it tends to be fairly quiet =P
I just repurchased the game online (since I lost my discs in the move, along with 1-2 other things). I'm looking forward to playing again . I was considering Rift.. but while pretty and polished, for me it lacks the depth and immersiveness of Vanguard. I'm really looking forward to playing! The promise of new content (or at least interest in fixing some of the old) is really nice, and the memories of my old guild and great community make it an easy decision.
I would definately try it if it wasnt for the timezone issue (EU). Playing a game with seriously low pop AND playing only of off hours... no thx =/
Huh? Are you playing on the Telon server? You have to get away from Halgar(EU) server, as pretty much no one is playing there anymore and moved their chars to Telon server!
Telon is at Medium pop during EU primetime with over 500 people total online. Pretty impressive and something I have not seen in a long while.
Isle of Dawn is packed with players at the moment, with over 50 people roaming around during EU primetime. I even ran into camping issues with some quests 2 days ago lol.
I joined the Twighlyte Song guild and that one is very active with over 25 people online during EU primetime hours. Not bad either.
So far it's pretty impressive to see this kind of activity in Vanguard again. As it's a fun game.

All they need to do is make it f2p to get a playerbase again. But this is SOE we're talking about, logic fails them.

I am actually trying out Vanguard again and it seems everyone is now pretty much on the Telon server.
Seriously, I have never seen that many people on Isle of Dawn the last couple night, since it was launched!
There were over 500 people online sunday night! I hadn't seen that on a single Vanguard server for years.
So it seems the whole update announcement has triggered some people to come back and have it another go.

They would have to spend some proper money on it, but I would like to return to it.
Chins
Glad to see they still care. Hope they can bring people back with some meaningful fixes. I would give it a go.
