I'm new to Vanguard and looking for a good class that will allow me to effectively hunt and kill bosses without too much trouble. I'm assuming that the tank classes won't hold their own very well against bosses because they cant heal themselves very well. I'm also assuming that if I'm looking to run dungeons I'll always be looking for a healer whereas if I was playing a healer class there would be the option to tank the dungeon or heal depending on what classes are available at the time.
I'm currently playing DK. Am I better off to re-roll a healer (disciple or cleric?) with boss hunting and dungeon running in mind? Basically I'm looking for a class that can stand toe to toe with tougher mobs with good gear and player skills.

Keep your DK for one, they are always welcome in a group for tanking. Cleric and Discs are both fun and great for groups, and IMO VG has the best Cleric class I have found in an MMO not a fast killer but survivability is crazy and they are just fun to play.
Shaman is pretty good. My wolf shaman was sneaking around the world smashing bosses, good times. Only problem was againts 4dot+ healers what with no interrupts or stuns. Sometimes possible with trickery, like keeping a weaker buddy of healer around and beating him down but not dead over and over so healer keeps healing him. And other times you just fight each other endlessly.
Healers in general are the best boss solo'ers that I've seen and I liked all the utility and options I had as a wolf shaman. Sneaking(combined with ability to summon group members to a boss or such is neat), good regen, really fast run speed, pet with snare or for some offtanking, it just all added up to an enjoyable experience where I felt like I was rewarded for paying attention and keeping on my game.
Two exampes:
30-45min fight against a 6dot named snake 5 levels above me in a toe-to-toe fight where any wrong step would kill me.
Or kiting a big named cyclops around for as long that would have killed me really fast if I tried to stand up fight it.
Both really stood out as different types of a fight that required constant attention to what was going on short term staying alive and long term in managing damage vs running out of mana.
There were some things I could not solo where a cleric or disciple might be able to and vice versa, but I liked wolf shammy the best all around for solo. And bloodmage for group!
So it sounds like I'm better off to re-roll a healer type class rather then DK? With heals alone I'm sure any of the healers could outlast a tank in a fight against a boss. A well played cleric with good plate gear I'm sure would easy stand toe-to-toe against many of the boss mobs around the world. I'm also looking to craft heavy armor so a class that can use it would probly be best

Disciples are the best soloers. I haven't played a Cleric, but I imagine a Disciple does more damage, except maybe up against undead. If you prefer fighting up close while simultaneously recieving heals than the Disciple is right up your alley, not to mention most of their heals rely on endurance/melee strikes, so mana isn't a terribly huge issue, and as long as you time your heals/switch stances when you need to, you can fight on indefinently.
Also Disciples just look bad ass swinging a martial blade around.
Cleric is the slowest DPS ever. If you are into soloing, do not build a cleric. While their survivability is crazy, killing anything takes ages and you will get bored quickly. Cleric is, all the way, a class to be played in groups.
If you want to play a soloing healer, I also suggest a Disciple.
This is the best site for classes that I had found. They go in detail with abilities and even a walk through for each class up to level 20 :
http://www.tentonhammer.com/vanguard/guides
I would also recommend a Disciple as there Like monks that can heal dps and tank.
One thing I would say about Disciple is that there clam to fame are it's " endowments ". they are special abilities that you get if you do certain other abilities in order. Unless you use third party web sites such as the one above you would never even know you have endowment abilities.
You get your first one at level 4, here is what ten ton hammer has to say about the first endowment you get :
Endowment of Life With Cyclone Kick, you will also be able to use your first endowment, Endowment of Life. Endowments are not listed in abilities until you discover them by doing your attacks in a certain order. The Endowment of Life is a healing effect you will get from using Blessed Wind followed by Cyclone Kick followed by Void Hand. You must perform the moves in that order, but other moves can come in between so long as less than 8 seconds pass between any two moves in the combo. Since Cyclone Kick costs 3 Jin, you can open a fight by using Void Hand twice. Then you can use Blessed Wind to start the chain. You'll have the 3 Jin needed to use Cyclone Kick. You complete Endowment of Life with another Void Hand. You'll get a nice heal of roughly 180 points at level 5 and scaling as your level increases.
Now one thing about Vanguard is that tanks are hard to come by HOWEVER many classes can tank, such as Disciples and Clerics. I love my Disciple and had tanked in several instances along with group healing. My problem is that, at times have a hard time fighting healing and tanking, but that's just me. I'm sure many are good with it.
I decided to roll cleric. I've heard different things about them as far as soloing goes but I think in the long run their probly a killer class to play simply because of the tough mobs they can take down. With a cleric I'm assuming I won't have any issues defeating that 3-5 dot mob I come across in the world as long as my gear is decent.
Also clerics use heavy armor which I plan to craft for myself at some point. Something about crafting light and medium armor has never appealed to me. Although I may try it on an alt at some point.
So ya I decided on Cleric for the heavy plate, hopefully awesome survivability, and ability to tank dungeons if need be. So far I'm enjoying the class. If I was to go war cleric and use 2handed weapons, would that not give me a decent boost to dps? I can't imagine their dps is as bad as some of you are making them sound.

the funny thing is my Pally can solo easily and heal himself . so if you like sword and board that may be a way to go
