Hello everyone,
I play WoW, and I've been playing it since release. My curse is comparing every mmorpg with WoW, not just the graphics, combat and ui, but also the feeling/ambience of the game. This completely sucks because it makes settling in a different mmo almost impossible for me....
I have tried; LOTRO, Aion, Age of Conan, Warhammer...basically every other so called theme park mmo. I always came back to WoW. Why? Because they were like WoW but not WoW, so why play them instead of continueing WoW...Anyway, not long ago I stumbled onto Minecraft. I laughed and didnt take the game seriously...but then after having played it at a friend and realizing its potential I was very impressed with (mainly) the concept of the game. This led me to the point that I wanted to play more open-ended mmo's. The problem is, having played only the theme park ones briefly and WoW for 7(?) years, I have no idea which ones are best...That is where you all come in.
A game concept like Minecraft, Xyson, etc appeals to me, but I miss some indept combat here. I tried a Darkfall trial and loved the open-ended gameplay and full loot pvp, but there wasnt anyone on it appeared...only some high skill level elitist that have been there forever.
So I like: Survival/building game concepts, housing, combat, teamplay, player driven world, etc. I am not shy of pvp or full loot pvp. I'm looking into DAoC, Vanguard and Dungeons and Dragons atm....
Thanks for your input! Highly appreciated!
Kon.

Hehe yeah, I tried Rift.
Too similar to WoW...didnt see the point:S
Darkfall, youll ethier love it or hate it, or cry after the first time u die and lose everything and run back to Themepark MMO's
(Edit)- if u already tried it, i would suggest being in a Clan, thats where all your activites come from. most people arent on the mainland, they are usally around certain locations, if ur in a guild u get a crap load of action
I said I tried Darkfall, did you read the whole post? Anyway, thanks for your input!
edit: Hmm, might try that if all else fails. Thanks:)
Yea, your guna need to go to a Darkfall Politcal map, and pick some1 to join, if not, then go to a chaos city, but not much there usally ethier, the game is very Clan based, if ur a loner, you might only get lucky once a day.
if you like mechs you could try perpetuum online. has a 14 day trial if i am not wrong.
has similiarities with eve online (which you surely could try also ^^) but overall the combat is more engaging with taking cover and that sort in perpetuum (tho still quite "releaxing" if you compare it with darkfall or WoW). the game is not unneeded overcomplicated/annoying like some things in eve are from time to time tho it is still quite complex. it's also offline skilling like in eve and has a similar ui but the rest very much differs if you look closer.
it's more or less pvp focused with alliances fighting over outpost ownership (on beta islands) but also has safe areas (alpha islands) where noone can attack you while you do your buisness. PvE is more of a utility to make money as with most sandbox games tho but i find it quite fun and challenging and it always pays off to group up which i like.
it's a fairly new game like a little bit over half a year old with a small dev team but as it stands it's playerbase is growing nicely and patches role in at a decent rate also.
hope that helps if not i would keep an eye on darkfall nevertheless as they are soon to release quite a remake of the game on which they focused like nearly 1.5 years, maybe that will bring more ppl back and new ones to the game..it's also the reason why darkfall is so empty atm, they have severly neglected their live game for too long - sadly
There is also EVE if you want to give spaceships a go. Of course eventually getting into a corp will be the key to enjoying the game but you could start out by joining EVE University which is a good bit of fun while you learn about the game.
Perpetuum is also good and growing. Same thing as EVE but with robots.
Seems like finding a good Fantasy sandbox is hard though. Been meaning to give DF a go but haven't gotten around to it. I am watching ArcheAge but that is still a year or more away.
All die, so die well.
Found Perpetuum very samey and quite dull after a while. My problem with the theme park/ sandbox divide is that the divide is often too large.

There is a reason why WoW got the subs it has got...the game is 'good'.
While you listed some preferred features, you did not really explain what you are looking for, what are your expectations.
So far you tried PVE games, you tried PVP games...only option left I see here is sandbox - EVE Online.
Could try Mortal online, it's got it's problems but you could like it. Never know.

It's sort of a slump right now for those type of games especially in population; really, these type of games were always a niche anyway, I guess. EVE is probably the most succesful, still kicking, game of that type.
Vanguard is a good compromise between the major MMO types, I think. It's a pretty damn open world (gigantic) but still has the cohesive questing that most people enjoy in WoW types MMOs. Unfortunately you'll probably run into the same problem here as you did in Darkfall: the population.
Truthfully, I'd probably play Vanguard in a heartbeat (even swallowing my pride against never playing another game with SOE's involvement) if they were given ample amount of backing to create content and support the game. Sadly, you're not really given a second chance in MMOs it seems, so it's doubtful the population will ever recover unless they were to open it for free-to-play.
The market place is saturated so you survive or fail on launch. Look at how well a non-descript game like Rift has done purely on the back of a smooth launch. But it is a shame that titles like Vanguard fail.

The preferred features I added clearly show what I am looking for...a game with those features. Don't see what is not to understand about that. Ill try to be more elaborate then. These are some of the things I'm looking for in my new mmo, dont need all features in it, a few is enough to get my attention--->
-More player driven world then WoW i.e "sandbox"
-Lively world; WoW is all about going to places via portals, the world itself is dead.
-Survival(eating, fishing, etc)
-Building/farming; building your own shelter, housing, etc
-F2P(doenst have to be, preffered)
What I dont like
-Mech kind of games or sci-fi games like EVE.
Thanks for the information on EVE and Perputuum(spelling:P) though, appreciated.
I tried Mortal Online, it kept crashing and everything lagged...tbh it felt like a mess:(
It's difficult because all games seem to be heading towards dip-in, dip-out, solo-orientated play. Fallen Earth is by no means a sand box, but last time I played had a good sense of a world, dunno what pops are like now?

Fallen Earth is going free to play at the start of the August, I believe. That might be another one to look into.
Haha, hivemind!
Fallen Earth? Hmm, I'm going to check that out:)
Read on some forums that the population is very very low:( Anyone with an update on how that is?
World of Bees. Know what pops are like?

Checking out Mabinogi now....seems like building/housing is in it, combat, etc. The graphics are a bit too cute-ish, but maybe I can get used to that...Anyone with Mabi experience? Is it any good?

edit: Bleh nvm, it seems you have to pay for ingame items to make the game fun...
Features are one thing, implementation, how they operate and interact - the game design, is another.
Two games can have very similar list of features, yet they can play and 'feel' vastly different due differences in design. That's why I asked about your expectations rather than list of features.
To me, while many games are more or less similar to some other, each game has something unique. Going through list of your preferred features, it seems to me you picked up unique features of various games and put them on the list and I am afraid you won't find such game, solely because of method the list assembled.
I would say there are following types of games there:
1) PVP games - Darkfall, Mortal Online, Perpetuum.
2) Sandbox - EVE Online.
3) 'Minigames' - Global Agenda, Heroes of the Skies, World of Tanks etc.
4) The rest - WoW like games.
Then there are a exceptions that have 'strong' unique elements but it is mostly a personal preference and consideration. To name an example - Pirates of the Burning Sea.
Is there a MMO vastly different from WoW that has no spaceships? No, I do not think so.
look into www.primeonline.com
Oh my, Prime certainly looks like what im looking for!
3 faction PVP too, awesome:)
Too bad it wont come out until end of this year, so unplayable for me now, and i need to get rid of WoW...NOW!
You may not like this Kon but... Any of the Fable games (especially 2 but only on console), Portal 2, DA2, GTA IV etc. Have a bit of time off, can play multi-player on Windows Live.

Have you heard of Ryzom? I just started playing it yesterday, I started with Ultima Online so filling that void has been nearly impossible, Ryzom has something about it though. It is supposedly pretty sandbox-ish.
Anyway check it out maybe, wouldn't mind having someone to play with.
http://www.ryzom.com/en/
Hmm, taking a break of mmo's isnt working for me. I bought Mass Effect and Dragon Age, but even though they are AWESOME games I feel like I "need" an mmo.
Ryzom huh? Will check that out asap!
Thanks for all the input, highly apreciated!
Because of this quote alone... You should probably take a break from MMOs. Once you start feeling like you "need" an MMO, that's when burnout begins because nothing will meet your expectations. (been there, done that)
I'd recommend (even though you've already tried it) is a Free acct with LOTRO, just when you need the MMO fix, and play through Mass Effect and other single player games for the time being. Once your done with that, maybe SW:TOR will be out or we may have more information on Arche Age.
Of course, this is probably not what you want to hear and will ignore it. Just throwing it out there.
No, I won't ignore it:) Because I party agree with you.
Thing is, I enjoy playing mmo's more then single player games, so a break from mmo's is not for the best I think. I also think that there should be an mmo out there for my to play until games like Archage(sandbox, player driven, everything I am looking for).
