Premade characters may not be a good example. Several games with last name options don't require there to be one, its just an option. They still may include them, but they aren't talking about that yet.
They said no surnames, I'm not gonna dig for it. If you don't believe me go out and find it yourself. You can separate 2 words with a dash, but that's about it.

Actually, they said they weren't talking about it yet.

They have actually said they have no surnames at the moment.
People keep saying that, but I see no source. When I see one, I'll believe it.
I'd also like to point out that for a game that is supposed to be all about immersion in the Star Wars universe and feeling a personal attachment to your character, not having a surname is completely ridiculous.
I'd be really thinking about it if I was bioware due to the shear amount of people going to play the game...
Yeah, thing is first names will always be more important than last names. Everyone has to have a different first name to make things work smoothly. It can cause issues when communicating, trading, mail, reporting ect if you don't remember the last name.
Say I mail someone 10k credits named "Bill Blank", well there is already another char on the server named just "Bill". I send the credits to "Bill" because I don't think the last name is important and "Bill gets the credits while "Bill Blank" has no idea I even sent them.
Last names are extremely important to a Star Wars game.
Luke...Luke who?
While I know at the moment there are no surnames, its strange Bioware are so tight on the matter. It's just a surname...
Agreed, but they do limit people severely when answering pre-release questions, and after looking for these answers their customers WANT surnames. They would be disappointing several potential customers by not including them.

They could even force us to have one surname across our account, so long as we can have ONE.
If they release without surnames, I would bet money its added in later. (don't hold me to it I'm broke...maybe I should stop putting money on my opinion =P)
Its a feature a lot of games have been leaving out anymore so its not the first priority when making a game, but in this IP's case they really should have them. Heres hoping they do.
In February I read a "character creator" breakdown that specifically said there WAS last names in the creator, but it did not show the last name on the screen when you played. I just went back to that site though, to link to it, and the site was taken down, maybe due to NDA problems (just a guess to be honest) so I can't link to it.
I guess we just have to wait until we get better info. Here is to hoping they absolutely do have last names when it goes live since things can change.

There was a leaked Q&A from a tester not to long ago stating there were no surnames.

They still aren't answering at this time.
So nobody knows yet.

There is a reason for it.

I just hope they dont force us to use surnames, no pun intended. I don't mind having the option of surnames, but I rather not use them personally.
It would be a real pain in the butt if they have surnames and you have to type the first and last name just to send a /tell....
I heard you had to have the Collector's Edition to get a Surname.
I'm sure they were just trolling though...

Doing it the DDO way would probably work, you don't have to enter a surname and people don't have to use it to message you.
I agree entirely. Sometimes I use them other times I just like the single name, but the option should be there.
