No depth whatsover, and all the better for it. See sig.

You fight, and thats about it. Your main motivation is the story in PvE, and having fun in PvP. You flesh out your character very little, and there isn't much scope for making your character look unique (even 15k looks similar to the rest of armours).

The missions are well written and have some nice setups, conflicts and resoultions. The quests are mainly 'go meet x person', 'go kill x mob' or 'go collect x items' and as such are more incidental than anything else.

The weapons are deliberately low ranged in terms of damage to provide competitive PvP. All it does is put people off that like seeing big numbers and having unfair advantages over newer players. The same goes for armour and shields. The upgrade system works quite well, with most weapons having interchangable parts like sword hilts and bow strings. Unfortunately it doesn't change the graphic.

PvP is extremely tactical, it has striking comparisons with card games like Magic: The Gathering except played in teams of 8 vs 8 giving each team a possible 64 skills to base their playstyle around. 6 classes may not sound like much, but as you can pick a second class at no penalty it creates a huge number of different characters to play with. While you do get 'flavour of the month' builds, the presence of counter builds usually means it changes quite regularly.

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

Definitely for the casual gamer.  Especailly if your looking for a non traditional mmorpg or "online rpg" as ncsoft puts it.

Played many other mmo's including wow, and I enjoy this game very much.  It takes a fair amount of skill, and is very fast paced.  Hardly any down time and if you ever get tired of people, henchmen are a quick fix in some situations.

There is obviously room for improvement, however well worth the small investment for the enjoyablility.  Be warned however, there are quite a few people that stuggle with rudamentary skills and lessen the overall community.  Finding a solid group of friends is key to late game enjoyablility.

Hmm so if this game is so great then how come there is no charge for it like wow?....how else do they make money for upgrades and patches and such?

So if I want a good online game, I have to pay every month for it to be good? So you base your critiques of online games based upon monthly fees? Come on....

Anyway, there are expansions every 6 months or so. Otherwise, they stream free updates to your game, though they aren't huge ones. Also since all the areas are instanced, it requires a lot less bandwith so it costs them a lot less on that.

As far as mechanics and strategies go, Guild Wars is one of the richest games ever concieved. Take a look at some of the stuff over at http://www.guildwarsguru.com/...

    http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content/attribute-point-distribution-id270.php

    http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content/game-mechanics-id674.php

    http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content/skill-effectiveness-id1103.php

And check out this fantastic website too: http://www.gamesanalysis.com/games/guild_wars/index.php

There are something like 75 skills for each of the 6 professions in Guild Wars. You get to choose from 2 different professions. You only get 8 skills to take into battle and most skills are linked to an attribute specific to your profession.

So, because of the limited number of skills you can pack at one time and the 150 that you have available to choose from, you can easily see that anybody who claims that Guild Wars lacks depth is just another WoW tool trolling for a flame.

What Guild Wars does indeed lack is a significant amount of time-involvement. It isn't exactly a one day event to go from level 1-20 with every skill and every item you need, but it is only a couple hundred hours. And that makes those people who thrive in worlds where time spent playing is more important angry.

You see, thanks to the formulaic grind of games like UO and EQ, many mmorpg players are stuck with a pre-concieved (and ill-concieved) notion of what an online rpg should be. And since Guild Wars, doesn't prescribe to the time spent = capacity to "pwn" line of thought, those fanboys who get their rocks off by ganking people who have lives and don't play games in place of a full time job are a little pissed off.

Also, Guild Wars is about PvP. There are a few people who, again expecting the typical time-sink of mmorpg's, get upset at the linear feel of GW and somehow prefer to hit things midnlessly for a thousand hours instead of spending a couple hundred hours in PvE and then "get stuck" with just PvP left to experience.
