I've been feeling the death of PC gaming for YEARS. I grew up with the Apple ][e, and it was fantastic . RPG's fell off the face of the planet YEARS ago, which were my favorite genre.
I can't stand thumbticks either.. I'd go toe to toe with ANY kid with a controller vs. me with my trusty mouse and keyboard. You CANNOT get more accuracy via one finger (a thumb at that) vs. an entire hand, let alone the DPI accuracy you can attain with a mouse.
I dunno.. I feel old when I say I miss the good 'old days, but, I miss the good 'old days!
I've wondered this myself, going into Best Buy lately, why the PC rack is shrinking, but then it occurred to me... online distribution.
But is it possible the PC will go away?
I think there are enough technology companies out there manufacturing processors, motherboards, sound and video cards, etc. and constantly pushing the curve on the technology... they're ALL invested in this, they WANT to make money, and I don't think they'll all suddenly capitulate to the XBOX / PS3, especially when THOSE things don't perform a myriad of other tasks.
The controller piece was classic too btw, you know, maybe its my old school bias but I tend to think console gamers must be a dumber cross section of the population ( or at least less technologically sophisticated ). That's always been my elitist thought. People are generally dumb and these things are popular because they don't require anyone to type. Haha.
I can plug a mouse and keyboard into my PS3, that would be my G15 keyboard and my G5 mouse, and they work.
The 360 and the ps3 ARE COMPUTERS, just like my PC; just like an Apple is still a computer.
At some point the PC will cease to exist, yes indeed. Or at least the personal COMPUTER will, it'll be replaced by personal CONSOLES. You'll use a mouse and keyboard with it, it'll do everything your current PC does, the only exception being it's not the computer you use today. It'll be a slimmed down, more powerful version of the PC you use today.
The PC really only survives because of work and school, but the tablet has changed that. Eventually the PC won't really be needed for home use, even to watch porn. The console itself just needs to evolve a little more.
allow me to give you a one sentence answer to this question of "will gaming solely be on consoles or will pc development continue?"
the answer is~ Games will go wherever publishers damn well want them to.

Thats the stupidest statement ever. I hope its half true though. Maybe all these facebook, farmville, WoW, users will go away and play with their overpriced devices/toys, so that game devs can start making games for gamers, and i dont mean the death match console junkies.

The computer is vastly superior to consoles, however, that doesn't mean the masses always choose quality over quanitiy. Just ask Ronald McDonald.
Furthermore, I disagree that the PC is harder to create games for.
How many indie companies have Xbox titles compared to PC titles? Its so much easier to program for the PC, yet these huge corporations want people to think its the other way around. Why? Its so much more expensive to start up a console gaming studio. Activision and EA don't like competition. On the PC there are lots of competitors, and the entry in the PC market is cheap. In the console market its pretty much an oligopoly - only a few producers are out there due to the expensive start-up cost.
However, since people are sheep and believe whatever lie is told to them, they think the PC is inferior and more expensive to create games for. However, once we look at the facts its clear to see the PC is far more powerful and far cheaper to create games for.
I don't think the computer is going anywhere. Now, if a system existed that would hook up to my computer and take over when I want to play a game, all while I still get to utilize my mouse and keyboard, this might be a possibility. Especially if you can go afk, tab out, and look at pictures, dirty or otherwise, when not much is going on in game. That way I can have a cheap computer I don't have to upgrade while still getting to play the latest games at my desk, with the tools I'm familiar with while having full internet access.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

I think you are severely underestimating the power of a PC. I'd like to see any console run 3 games at once, have excel working in the background, surfing the internet, and have a video playing. Each on seperate monitors. A lot of PCs can handle this easily.

There is well over a billion PC's in use around the world. Tap ten to twenty percent of that and you have a larger market then all the consoles combined (well not including the PS2).
Some genres just play better with a keyboard and mouse, but to me, there are also some genres that play better with a controller, and I'll choose my big HDTV over my 23" monitor any day of the week. I don't plan on abandoning PC gaming anytime soon, but I've played games on consoles my entire life while my family didn't get our first PC in the house until I was just about to graduate high school, so I'll always feel just as comfortable with a controller as I will with a keyboard and mouse.

For one thing, pc is generated and moved forward by technology and the need to connect and share information at speeds of light. People will only switch from pc to console if the console allows them to implant software, tweaks, and technological advances for their work and entertainment. If I had to choose a pc over a console, I'd choose pc at this moment. Hands down I dont just game, I work. Don't spout nay say and gloom for pc, it's perfectly impossible for some people who make a living doing games or making software or even doing construction to work solely from their phone. Show me a phone that can run 3ds max or zbrush and mudbox and I'll switch over.
I struggle not with life, money, emotions, and world, but against old mindsets and selves to be proven obsolete in a age and time of rapid changes. Go create fun, so you can have fun.
I used to work in computer sales. The margins have shrunk to the point where it's no longer worth your while having an actual build shop. Online stores, buy the parts and build it yourself is the way to go. Laptops are matching desktops for power, so even then you needn't build yourself a rig anymore, though expandibility is lost.
Ultimately, the hardware in the gaming systems is quickly catching up to the PC because the PC is stagnating. There's nothing really new going on there. Eventually you'll see all the game systems do everything a PC can, and do it cheaply and more stable. Unless there's another PC revolution (like in the early 90's) the PC could be in trouble.
Well you can already hook keyboards and mice up to an Xbox 360 or a PS3, so really if PC's do fade out as a gaming platform, all is not lost. That is, If developors start actually letting you use a keyboard/mouse combo for games as a control option!
Heck maybe next gen consoles will come with Keyboard/Mice in addition to their controllers!! They should, imo. If at the very least to be able to browse the web with ease.
I see Tablets and phones as the future, PC's will remain as gaming devices for a while. Android and Apple will own the home market eventually, Microsoft will still have the enterprise market. I already can invoice and print from my phone and the upcoming quad core tablets will have great graphics. Future phones will have fold out screens (coming sooner than you think) and very fast cpu/gpu's. Things change and the traditional computer as we know it will pass.
You know, put a keyboard and mouse on a console and it is no different than a pc,,,as far as gaming is concerned. Would love to play FPS on my wide screen.
