I'm not a hipster in the slightest and don't think it makes me a better person to say that I like a console controller better than a keyboard for many types of games. For about 30% of games, I prefer a keyboard, but the other 70%, personally, I understand why they make gamepads for pcs and not keyboard hook-ups (as far as I know) that replace controllers for consoles. I grew up on the sonsole controller, so it will always feel more native to me and it's the exact same situation of "Why should I comform and learn what YOU want me to to play a game I can play on console."
I generally believe that as a gamer you should learn how to use all mediums masterfully and THEN bitch about the differences.
I can play things equally well with both, but for 70% of games, I prefer console style controllers. In an ideal world, I'd have both. A gamepad with the ability to customize the controls for action and twitch based situations, with a keyboard on the side for added control and when things slow down. One in my hands and one in my lap. I don't consider the console controller to just "f###ing suck, like you do. I don't know of any of my friends that do. I generally hang around a crowd that uses both, likes both, may lean one way or the other, but doesn't straight out bash one or the other. It's the same as the Xbox v. PS debates. Buy both, play both, learn how to use both, and quit whining. :P
The inability to lighten up doesn't make you hardcore.
Also, I don't foresee the "end of pcs" in the slightest. Consoles and the other forms are always going to be "handicapped" versions of a pc. The pc will always be the base and the others will always be crappy versions. We won't just stop making pcs or gimp them for the sake of tablets, etc. I personally do not own a tablet or some of the other types of things BECAUSE of how pointless they are comparatively. Not to mention the redundancy. Spend 600 bucks for a redundant system because I can walk around with it doesn't appeal to me (especially when I have a netbook which can do the same things for 300) and is actually SMALLER.) PCs will just get more powerful, smaller, and smarter, they won't be phased out entirely.
The inability to lighten up doesn't make you hardcore.
To Avalon, tablets , phones and iPads will NEVER be as powerful as a pc, NEVER! Your iPad , tablet can never be upgraded, and constantly there are upgrades for pcs comming out like crazy. there is no way one of those devices can out power and out preform a computer which cost about roughly 5000-10000 bucks, and a video card with a value of 500 to as high as 2800-3000. pcs are here to stay , if anything the tablet and iPads are fads and will either die ( because they are useless ) or the companies that produce them release a new one every 6-9 months just to keep up with the latest tech that pcs have.
Yea... no matter what they do to consoles... The PC will always be there for gamers... And will always out perform... and out graphics what a console has to offer...
On the topic of developing for muli-configs... its not as extreme as you make it out to be, Program asks OS "what video card do we have" it says "we have xxxxxx this is how you use it" dont need to code for every possible configuration. Coding for a Colsole i imagine would be frustrating because you are limited by the hardware having to vigoursly manage your memory and what not.
Didnt actually see a conclusion to your argument...or maybe i missed it..

I think a lot of people just like having PCs. Don't need a computer room in your house for a portable tablet. I'm not honetly too worried about them becoming obsolete. I have a PC and a console, and there are different types of games I prefer to play on different systems. MMORPGs are far superior on a PC. Gotta Alt + Tab while waiting for a raid to start.
I can plug a mouse and keyboard into my PS3, that would be my G15 keyboard and my G5 mouse, and they work.
The 360 and the ps3 ARE COMPUTERS, just like my PC; just like an Apple is still a computer.
At some point the PC will cease to exist, yes indeed. Or at least the personal COMPUTER will, it'll be replaced by personal CONSOLES. You'll use a mouse and keyboard with it, it'll do everything your current PC does, the only exception being it's not the computer you use today. It'll be a slimmed down, more powerful version of the PC you use today.
The PC really only survives because of work and school, but the tablet has changed that. Eventually the PC won't really be needed for home use, even to watch porn. The console itself just needs to evolve a little more.
So the consoles will become pc's and thus pc's won't exist???
It's a proven historical fact that beer saved humankind.
I play games on PC and on console systems. For me a controller is much better then a keyboard/mouse. Why?
1. You move your character with a joystick. That is much easier then WASD or mouse and you have much better control over your character.
2. You look around with a joystick. The same argument as above. So with only using two thumbs you have very fine control moving your character and looking around. How many fingers do you need for that on keyboard/mouse?
3. Beside 2 joysticks you have 20 basic keys on a controller. You can have more if you are using combination of keys, like using SHIFT or CTRL. Using 20 keys on a keyboard (beside WASD) without looking is difficult as hell. On a controller you can very easy remember their locations because of the configuration of a controller.
Three more reasons why I prefer console systems over PC:
1. You can play on a big TV.
2. You can have great sound.
3. You can sit comfortably in a sofa.
Trollin', bro?
I have joystick, gampad and expensive sound system plugged into my PC as we speak. I could plug it in a large TV if I wanted and I could change my chair for a couch.
This is why consoles are selling, PC's are too complicated for some to comprehend. Even when things are pretty much plug and play these days.
When you can have as much control over the functionality and capability of your console/phone/tablet as you do over your pc, then you'll have a pc competitor.
Today, you have so very little control over your non-pc devices (Mr. Hotz can attest to this) that I think people will only relinquish that when the functionality of these devices can exceed that of a pc.
the only thing that will do away with the home gaming pc, are biomimetic implants that will make the user themselves the most powerfull type of computer ever seen.
and as far as i know biomimetic implants are a figment of my imagination
First off you have the various big hitters that depend on it. The likes of Intel, AMD, Nvidia etc. and then you have the companies that use the products created by the big hitters, Gigabyte, MSI, Asus etc. Do you honestly see these people allowing their main revenue stream to vanish because a few MIT nerds in the games industry want an easier time of it? of course not. The likes of the companies above would rather destroy the consoles completely before they allow the PC to die.
Secondly it's the PC that drives innovation in the games industry where the consoles create stagnation. A new console hits the market every four years or so and then every game created for it for the next four years is stuck at that level of technology. The PC is constantly evolving, getting more and more powerful week in and week out; and with every new advancement the games industry pushes the envelope to take advantage of it. No industry can ever survive in a state of stagnation so if the PC died I have a feeling that the games industry would not be that far behind it.
Why not go the best of both worlds. I've got my PC hooked up to a 46in LCD TV and real surround sound. Wireless is king.
The problem of non-standard design wll likely be less of a problem into the future. Every developer/manufacterer knows that its the main issue and will be concentrating on reducing the conflicts. It just makes $$$ sense.

something like that would take years, and we would have heard of something way before it hits the streets, but it's just not happening, and non-standard configurations are only getting worse as MS loses computing market share, and people are becoming less interested in desktop PCs in general.
This article is Win-eriffic. That being said, I enjoy "looking down" on console gamers...and that's not just because I'm tall. One of the things driving me crazy is the rise of tablets. I mean, really?! You can buy a laptop for half the price that is way better!...but...you have to use a mouse. Ugh

This wholeheartedly goes for the controller issue as well.

That was epic. I've never really loled at anything on this site, but that was the closest I've come. Well done, Coyote.

What's with the chopstick hate? Is it now cool to hate on other cultures?
I've been reading this supposed claim that consoles would take over PC gaming in tech/PC/games magazines dating back to the late 90s.
the only thing that will do away with the home gaming pc, are biomimetic implants that will make the user themselves the most powerfull type of computer ever seen.

Nah! the PC isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

There's no way this trend is reversing.
PC will always > game systems.
Sure my Atrix replaces my PC for most internet use, but gaming, and studio work will always require a hotrodded PC.
PC are not going anywhere, just most people don't need a full PC. Those who just surf the net and socialize.
My PC is my home entertainment center. Cable TV is what has become obsolite
