AMD: Xbox 720 graphics will look like Avatar

WoW if this really happens I would say people will be utterly amazed. Death to the pc you say ? It isn't so far fetched as some think.

I'm not a PC elitist, but don't all consoles start out ahead of their PC counterparts?

They always say stuff like that. In a year we will see tech demos that look better than what the console can do. Happens every time.

It will end up looking very good. But I doubt developers will be able to pump out games with graphics looking like that in actuality. It will definately be capable of it, but unless they have 10 years + in developing it then I don't think it's possible.

whatever exec spouted that nonsense should be fired.

    I call shenanigans.

The succesor to the Xbox360 is coming sometime 2013 (if the world is still alive by that time ^^). The technology simply won't enhance that much within the next year and a half. We don't even have hardware yet, that can handle more then some 10-15 million polygons, forget about having all of them animated on the fly.

Stuff like nurbs or voxel rendering would be needed to achieve the level of detail found in Avatar, and that stuff can't be rendered on the fly for the next 10 years I'd say.

Look at 3dMax and see how far you get with current GPUs in that regard. It takes ages to render photorealistic scenes with current desktop-hardware and even the newly introduced V-Ray 2.0 that uses GPU-acceleration for the render-process isn't as fast as required.

    So yeah... it's all marketing-blurps.

Remember the day when they were talking about the PS2 being able to render Pixar movies. I have a feeling that what they say will not be the truth. :D

    BOOYAKA!

Sure. But every year our computing powered has doubled end over end. Not to mention the fine tuning companies will have with consoles (esp Sony/Microsoft). I'm excited to see what the next gen of console will be like. Hell, Im just playing KOTOR on my 360.. and from that to current games the difference is unreal.

All is speculation until it's released. I love how fast our technology is advancing every year. Core i7 in 6-8 months will look like a baby compared to Ivy Bridge. Think of what we are going to be able to accomplish in 2014-2015. Exciting times for console and computer gamers alike.

Even if it is true, I still find it very exciting from a PC gamer perspective. It really doesn't take very long for our pc cards to match and surpass consoles' abilities.

Moores law is incorrect and doubling in performance has stopped allready a few years ago. The new IvyBridge and new GPUs released next year might improve by 5-10%, but that won't even be doable without increasing power-consumption or drastically decreasing the process-width. 28nm won't do mircalces compared to the currently used 32nm.

And sorry to say, but powerconsumption.... A console using the amount of power used by a high-end-desktop isn't going to happen. You simply can't sell a console that draws 500 Watts of power, forget about cooling it in a box as small as current consoles.

Next-gen consoles might be able to produce the quality of graphics of current desktop-systems, but that's far far away from being photorealistic rendering in realtime.

We need Quizzical in here.  But Avatar level seems a bit extreme but I can see it looking pretty good.  I'm sure by then we will have PC's that can do that though.

Not at all, the difference is game developers are able to attempt to tap every ounce of horsepower in the consoles from day 1. When developing a PC game they must always take into account the vast majority of PC gamers do not have state of the art hardware. This gives the perception that the brand new console is more powerful than a state of the art PC when that is not the case at all.

This.  Additonally, many games (Skyrim is said to have this) have higher res graphics for the PC than the consoles due to the possibilty for PC's to be more powerful (which they are for sure.)

    Speaking of Skyrim....

Oblivion was a 360 launch title, it was also released on the PC.   The PC version was superior even though it was hindered by the broad range of hardware it had to run on.   Which is another reason ppl think new consoles are superior, not only can dev's make the most of the hardware they also know that EVERYONE has exactually the same CPU/GPU/RAM etc...  that makes a difference as well.

In the end, it is true when a new console is released the games will look better than a lot of pc games, it's not because the console has superior hardware.

To the OP,  it was also said the PS2 would deliver Toy Story quality graphics... they are blowing smoke, again.

Console games are written to the metal and can get so much more out of their hardware compared to the PC. Also games today are made for 6 year old console hardware and not for modern PCs, so us PC gamers just get poorly optimized ports and that's why it seems so far off.

Epic released a trailer a few months back of what they could get from a PC with 580SLI or whatever and that looked nearly CGI quality and that's what I think AMD mean. I can guess that new consoles if released in 2013 will have 2012 hardware and that'll be a 680 and 7970 or whatever ATI and Nvidia call it. So written to the metal and not APIs like on the PC then you could get far better than that Epic trailer.

So I can believe it will look close to CGI.

I hate hype.  Remember when the first videos of Doom 3 emerged and people said "Holy shite, that is impossible!", almost universally?  Now, you can run Doom 3 on a cell phone.

It's nice to know that the tech will be forthcoming, but not any major surprise.

Yeah, another one fell for that scam apparantly. The amount of RAM needed for this, if we take the numbers told in the video for granted would be an amazing 2.1 TB...
