Wow, I think I've seen the excuse "It's Bioware" used to justify just about every aspect of this game. 'is this game going to be good?' - it's bioware, 'is there any reason to play this game other than story?' - nope, it's bioware. lol.
I see nothing wrong with that statement. Do i question anyone's faith in Anet? nope. I don't roll my eyes when same kind of reasoning is given regarding GW2. Believe me when i say that reputation speaks volume and when a company has a track record like Bioware it is hard not to trust them with SWTOR.
But what about Gameplay? What are some advance gameplay features for SWTOR?
Because if I play this game, I will likely skip quest and stuff like that. I want to make sure the gameplay is fun and interesting before I invest in such a game.
Does SWTOR have aimed combat?
whats going on gameplay wise?
/Sigh...
Well game-play is what you experience from level 1-??. They are a gaming company after-all, so i would assume they've at least tried to make that part fun. I'd suggest watching some video's, reading some hands-on impressions. There's also many stickied threads on a few different sites to look through, that give a good run down of all to expect from TOR. If in the end you see nothing that appeals to you, you're free to not play or purchase the game.

I don't think real MMORPG's are for you, you are better off looking at [MMO-]shooters, or maybe dungeon crawlers/slashers (there are quite a few asian ones released rescently/soon).
No real [MMO]RPG will be fun if you "skip quest and stuff like that", quests and story are THE gameplay.
Wow, I think I've seen the excuse "It's Bioware" used to justify just about every aspect of this game. 'is this game going to be good?' - it's bioware, 'is there any reason to play this game other than story?' - nope, it's bioware. lol.
Back on topic, though, the game is definitely pushing very hard on the personal storyline aspect of the game. So much so, that I'm starting to wonder if they think it'll really be enough to hold players interest. Some of the videos I've seen recently seem to indicate that they expect players to play through one story, then roll and alt and do it all over again (similar to DA2). I'm not sure how much I buy this, but the game does seem to have other features that could be fun. The pvp looks like it might be alright, though we haven't seen a ton of coverage on that portion of the game. There's also crafting and space combat, though the space combat looks pretty bad imo.
All in all, the story should probably be the main reason to play this game (though, as others have pointed out, I wouldn't be expecting masterpiece theatre.) If you do plan on playing the story, there does seem to be other aspects to give you a break from that, but they definitely don't sound like the highlight of this game.
All in all, I'm still a bit skeptical about this game, but will probably play it as a filler title.
That's because its Bioware damn it...
Bioware is 150% about storyline. That is what ever single game they've ever produced has been about. They aren't going to produce a game that has some sort of innovative combat system, sandbox PvP, etc. They are doing what they are good at, and thats the best chance of success they have.
It's still an MMO, with all the same mechanics and game systems cut from the same mold of EQ/WoW. People pretend that because its innovation is story based, that its not doing all the same things that every other successful MMO up to this point is doing, and thats ridiculous.
Also, going back to the OP... the idea that a personal storyline, which is the very definition of an immersion mechanic... would somehow cause detatchment from your character is farcical. You want detatchment? Play a game that has no storyline mechanics at all.
Besides the fully voiced storyline the rest of the game is an homage to WoW.
Raiding and instanced PvP with generic WoW-style combat is what they are hoping you will do once the story is over.
This pretty much sums it up. WoW with focus on storyline and typical Star Wars stuff (blasters, droids, lightsabers, etc).
I get so sick of reading the word WOW. When will Blizz fans realize there's more to this genre than WOW? The combat isn't WOW combat, it's typcial MMO combat. Calling it generic (i'm going to assume, you say that because it's been done), is like saying BF3 will have generic FPS combat. If you don't like turn based combat, why are you even into MMORPGs to begin with?
I also get really sick of reading opinions from people who obviously do not like the genre to begin with. Go play action games if that's what you want, diablo comes to mind or torchlight. If all you want is action combat MMO's aren't for you. I'm sorry turn-based combat is one of the foundations of an MMORPG, if it's not your thing, MMO's aren't your thing.
Comments like the above show you only played an MMORPG to jump on the bandwagon when it became popular. You had no stake in the genre, or love for it, you just liked playing with other people.
I prefer to be able to type and communicate while I play an MMORPG, Turn-based combat allows that, it's about strategy rather than action. I can get action anywhere if I want it, that's why there are other genre's!!!!!

1. We don't need to justify this game. It will do well. If it's for story or gameplay is something we will have to wait and see.
2. If the game is mostly story based, then it's called a role-playing game. Until recently no one picked up an RPG just to press the "fast forward" button and pick up the reward. The journey and experience is the point.
3. Those who don't like the "standard" or "WoW" style of MMORPGs are typically those who don't play games for role-playing or imagination. They play for rewards. These are they type that read the last chapter of a mystery novel first. They want dessert before dinner or just dessert.

No, we play for community. If we played for rewards we'd thrilled to death with wow clones which throw purple items around like pieces of confetti.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already

I'm talking pre-carebear, OP classes, click here for instant level up WoW. The one that is copied most but never actually duplicated.

1. Probably true.
2. Agree. This game is literally a massively multiplayer role playing game. In other words similar to a single player role playing game, but it's massively multiplayer lol. aka It's a real MMORPG, it's not just using that title figuratively. aka If you like grabbing a bunch of quests without reading them and completing the objectives really quick and running back to collect your xp and rewards then you might not like a real MMORPG.
3. Disagree. I think most people that play MMORGs of any type today play it for the competitiveness, to compete against other players. To compare who has the better gear, or who has the better combat skills, or who can reach endgame the fastest, or who has progressed farther in the raid endgame. Bringing the Story aspect of an MMORPG back to the forefront makes those gamers a little uncomfortable. Maybe because the they think "What's the point of an MMORPG without competing against each other for gear and status?"
If you "skip quest and stuff like that"...then you should not bother to play this game.
good way of saying skip this one? yeah.
The most "interesting" thing I have seen is the implementation of a cover mechanic for some classes. other than that, feel free to expect nothing special in combat.
Other than the cover mechanic which is for i think 2-3 classes max, and the voice acting during class storylines, the rest of the game is a fairly generic world of warcraft clone from what I have seen, just with a starwars skin. Bascally if WoW bores you, SW: ToR will probally bore you as well, especally combat wise. After I seen the recent flashpoint vid, I lost interest in the game due to how overly generic the combat looks, they didn't even try, a cover mechanic good for 2-3 of the 8 classes or something is not enough uniqueness for me. Combat wise GW2 wins out hands down, due to cross class combo's and such features added to an otherwise wow/generic combat engine. I bet all of the class storylines at the core will be the exact same story just told diffrently just like bioware games usually are. I dunno though I think there is going to major backlash/flak when people relize the game is just a generic world of warcraft clone yet again at the core, it happend with rift which isin't near as high profile as SW:ToR is.
All said and done if your looking for a MMO that feels fresh and new, SW: ToR is not the one for you, save your money and give GW2 a shot maybe, or better yet just hold out and play some f2p titles till late 2012.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Now see that right there. This is the kind of stuff I have been saying from the beginning. Today's shallow, young, immature, gamers born and bred on World of Warcrack don't give a rat's ass about reading or listening to no storylines or quest descriptions whatsoever. And that's the main problem as to why today's game developers continually develop games nowdays with braindead and shallow content. It really makes me want to hurl when I think about it to much. That's all I'm saying....
No, we play for community. If we played for rewards we'd thrilled to death with wow clones which throw purple items around like pieces of confetti.
Are you serious? hardly anyone plays for community anymore. I'd love it if people did, people want these games to become action oriented, that's why they've strayed so far from community to begin with. There's no time for it, they are all to busy chasing "carrots" (in other words) rewards.....
Edit to add-- the only gaming communities that are left are those that travel together from game to game. Most friendships like this were formed in older games, very few new ones have spawned great communities.

Well they did start MMO's with WOW, which means they are probably diablo players as well, it's all about reward and killing, they don't listen to the in-game music, listen to the atmosphere, read or listen to dialogue, they're too busy rocking out while farming loot.

Has anyone not asked themself what they will do once they experience the story a couple times, maybe across a few alts?
ToR has shown it has no end-game beyond the treadmill chasing the carrot on the stick for better gear.
They have in a sense made a very linear story driven game that lacks any sandbox elements or anything a roleplayer would be interested in doing.
Pretty sad to see a game that spent so much money for developement but has so little to show for it.
The pvp, crafting, ship housing, space combat all look subpar and or tacked on and after thoughts that were added to the game and the game was not build around these.
It's almost like they took a single player game and added multiplayer and then added on from there.
And you know what I have followed the game and what all the fanboi's say, I watched E3 coverage on ToR, I have watched over 10hrs of leaked player videos showing all elements of the current meta game and nothing shows anything that should warrant the budget this game has....
For the most part ToR looks and comes off as a online game and not and online world.
Blizz perfected the chasing the carrot for gear.... and people have grown tired of it, Wow is bleeding subs like crazy and has lost over 1 million subs in the past 6 months.
If anything games like TSW and ArcheAge are the true next gen mmo's people should be looking to and excited about.
Played: MCO - EQ/EQ2 - WoW - VG - WAR - AoC - LoTRO - DDO - GW/GW2 - Eve - Rift - FE - TSW - TSO - WS - ESO - AA - BD Playing: Sims 3 & 4, Diablo3 and PoE Waiting on: Lost Ark Who's going to make a Cyberpunk MMO?
Has anyone not asked themself what they will do once they experience the story a couple times, maybe across a few alts?
ToR has shown it has no end-game beyond the treadmill chasing the carrot on the stick for better gear.
Isn't this something you have to ask yourself about any MMO? No endgame? All about chasing gear? WHy? Crafted gear is almost just as good, very little advantage for PVP gear etc... Why would I need to chase gear?
They have end-game it's a question of how long it will last, My guild for isntance PVP's, we look forward to little else in end-game, most from my old SWG server are of the same mentality which is why we're working to ensure we all make the same server, multiple guilds all looking to continue PVP from the past. both friend and foe.
All we really need is something fun to play and each other, everything else is moot. As long as we have fun playing the actual game there will be plenty of longevity in that. Hell in SWG we had nothing, nadda, squat, outside of PVPing with no incentive to do so, we had tons of fun. Community is what creates longevity afterall.

This post is so full of win and truths, that I'm going to give it a
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

No, it's actually not. The GDC/skill cooldown timer/fast energy regen combat was first introduced by Turbine in AC2 which Blizzard stole and improved upon. So technically it would be AC2 combat, but since that game was cancelled people such as my self refer to this style of combat as WoW-style combat because that is where it first became popularized. Every game before WoW did not use this style of combat.

Ah, turn based combat. I get it. Except, I don't agree with you. Dozens of MMO games do not have combat that resembles WoW as closely as TOR does. UO, AC, EvE, EQ1, AO, AoC, SWG, BP, and CO just to name a few have a very different feel to combat than WoW.
I also get really sick of reading opinions from people who obviously do not like the genre to begin with.
I think you are missplacing your aggression a little here. I am a fan of SWTOR, I've already invested over $300 into the game and there's not even a solid release date for it. I am, however, not a blind fanboy and I have assesed hours of beta footage and actually had a chance to play the game myself. The combat is closer to the "feel" of WoW than any other MMO game on the market right now except maybe LOTRO.
The actual mechanics are closer to the way CoX works, but it doesn't "feel" like CoX when I played it, it felt like WoW.
What I don't understand is why that's a bad thing in your eyes? WoW has great combat and so does SWTOR. Arguably the best in the MMO genre. Personally I prefer LOTRO in overall gameplay, but I recongize that WoW has superior combat.

Funny that you can take one comment I made and extrapolate an entire game library from it. The Diablo comment was especially amusing as I have not liked any Blizzard game ever released in their entire history. There have always been much better alternatives already on the market or that were released around the same time. I much preferred Baldur's Gate/NWN around the time Diablo/Diablo 2 were popular.
Torchlight was OK, but only held my interest for a few hours. I'm just not a fan of those types of games. On the other hand I've put well over 400 hours into LOTRO, not including beta gameplay time.
Comments like the above show you only played an MMORPG to jump on the bandwagon when it became popular. You had no stake in the genre, or love for it, you just liked playing with other people.
Since you seem to want to create a fantasy of who I am I will tell you a little about my gaming history.
I've actually been playing MMO games since before they were called MMO games (1994-1995 approx.). I've played every MMO game to be released in North America that cost money to purchase or play. I absolutely hate what WoW did to this genre and how stagnant it has become over the last 7 years and I have not stuck with a game, besides LOTRO, for more than a month or two.
Despite that I still harbor a love for this genre due to the incredible games that were released before WoW and I still hope that some day the genre will get out of the rut it has been in and we will get another online world to explore instead of just the current string of assembly line single-player games that can sometimes be played with other people.
It seems that games like SWTOR and GW2 are moving in the right direction but I think it will still be years before we see games that are more than cleverly hidden skinner boxes show up again.
I prefer to be able to type and communicate while I play an MMORPG, Turn-based combat allows that, it's about strategy rather than action. I can get action anywhere if I want it, that's why there are other genre's!!!!!
I'm not really sure what this last part has to do with Dionysys or my comments. WoW definitely does not have any faster paced combat than SWTOR does. I mean, their GDC is exactly the same, so in reality, they are exactly evenly paced so I'm a bit confused by this last statement.
Try learning about the person you are quoting before making wild accusations. You just come off sounding silly when you have no idea who you are talking to.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
But most of us haven't played the game yet so it would be hard to judge this but from the looks of gameplay videos it seems like the basic click and wait gameplay.
The games unique feature is story pretty much so if you're not interested in quests or story then this game is not for you.
Are you all not done whit this yet , were all biast to our fav games, every single one of us, even I know that I am biast sometimes due to my brain being what it is..a human brain, and those just reacts biast to whatever it likes.
and its not like its going to chance anyting .. waisting time on a forum countering each other post .. exsiting stuff! ... ..
not that this (what im writing right now) is very exsiting but eh,..call it my good digital deed of the day.

My response was to both of you, some parts are about what you said, some are about what the other did. Overall though it's an opinion on what I feel after reading forums for a day or so. If that's not how you feel, or you feel my statements don't apply to you, that's fine. This wasn't an attack on you personally, just an observation. I am like I said, sick of what seem to be non-MMO fans bitching and moaning about turn-based non-twicth combat. To me it is no different than going to a FPS forum and complaining that those games don't have turn-based combat.
I have no clue how closely TOR's combat resembles WOW's, or if it's closer to AC's I haven't played TOR so how would I? I'm referring to the form of combat not how it's executed.

I'd be surprised if I ended up quitting before 4 months. I have no doubt the stories will last me that long. The end-game I probably won't stick around for. I've spent a good chunk chasing gear already. I might swap to GW2 for endgame, as their PvP will no doubt be notches above SWTOR. GW2 will probbaly carry over their $100,000 tournaments... in which case, I can chase that instead of gear.
Or just mess around with the smaller tournamets, either way, I'd prefer end PvP over end raid.

I prefer to be able to type and communicate while I play an MMORPG, Turn-based combat allows that, it's about strategy rather than action. I can get action anywhere if I want it, that's why there are other genre's!!!!!

Reading this thread brings a few things to mind:

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
I'm sorry but when I read this kind of drivel it just pisses me off to no end and I just had to chime in with my two cents worth.

Played: MCO - EQ/EQ2 - WoW - VG - WAR - AoC - LoTRO - DDO - GW/GW2 - Eve - Rift - FE - TSW - TSO - WS - ESO - AA - BD
Playing: Sims 3 & 4, Diablo3 and PoE
Waiting on: Lost Ark
Who's going to make a Cyberpunk MMO?

This post is so full of win and truths, that I'm going to give it a
+3
The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
The amount of times wow has been uttered in this thread is astonishing.
It's almost like that's all we think about.
Groovy.
Try learning about the person you are quoting before making wild accusations. You just come off sounding silly when you have no idea who you are talking to.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
The gameplay is pretty much basic mmorpg.
