last time i played was in beta and 2 weeks into launch, had ok fun, nothing special but hit a wall around lvl35.
Then 2 weeks ago I came back and rolled a new toon, a necro, warlock combo and see what has happend in Rift after i left.
The preformance is better, much better, had good 20fps extra than I had when i left, got into a good guild, did the invasions, rift, the boring quests, dungeons, i skipped crafting this time beacuse crafting in Rift is the most boring and pointless that I have seen to date, even the low budget asian MMOs have better crafting.
Everything whent well, got good gear, did PVP and as i sead, rift ect, then BAM.....brickwall around lvl 30, I couldnt force myself to log back in again,so I unsubbed again and whent back to Vanguard, where the quests are fun and challenging, the crafting is excellent.
What's up with Rift and it's brickwalls, seen many people hitting the wall around 30, then later in mid 40s and ofc the mindnumbing, boring lvl 50 grinds.
As i see it now, I doubt I'll ever return to Rift, dosen't matter if they release a new expantion, they need to rewamp the whole quest system, take away the handhelding bonanza system that even a 5 year old can quest without much trouble, and yes, they need to scrap the whole crafting system and make a new one that's acual is worth a damn and fun.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

The wall seems to happen just after scarwood reach.
Up to that point the game is flowing nicely its holding your hand the entire time, quests logs are full you have access to a couple great dungeons and three fun Warfronts...
Then u get to moonshade in your mid to late 30's.
Suddely the game opens up with three zones. your jumping from moonshade to early droughtlands and early ironpine peak.
You have a couple quests here, a couple quests there and its just way too much porting back and forth.
THe dungeons kind of dry up a bit and mentally u know u wont see another warfront until endgame...
in rift levels 36-50 are kind of painful because the game does something noone expects, it opens up!
Theres a reason i leveled from 44 to 50 doing nothing but earth rifts in shimmersand... because the game become unfocused.
many people here should appreciate that though, because the main complaint is that rift is way too linear.

Nailed it.
@Torgrim
I think you mentioned crafting twice. Define what you mean by "pointless." What would make crafting fun?
I ask because I've played UO, EQ, Vanguard, EQII, WOW, Eve, COX, Champions, DCUO, STO, AoC and now, Rift.
I don't think I've ever found crafting "fun." I don't mind gathering materials for other people. At least that way, I make some cash. But, I've never had fun with crafting (actually making items).
What makes it fun for you?
So far, I'm having a blast in Rift. But, I'm not at that level you mention is a brick wall, yet.
I'm not sure if it's just me, but the mechanics of the game remind me alot of a mixture of WOW and EQ.
I enjoyed both games.
But, I did not enjoy crafting in either game.
It's not about fighting, it's about balance. It's not about enlightenment, it's about balance. It's not about balance.
Once you really get to thirty you begin to see how restrictive the world is and small. I do not blame them for that actually it was smart make it small and expand. But then you get to 50, and it is the same grind as wow, no way to really improve your character post the 50 stage yet.
A lot of things will change when they introduce the AA system, i know most of my guild are hoping for AA akin to Everquest 1. We all talk about how awesome that AA system was.

How is the world small?
In your mid 30s (after scarwood) you run right into Moonshade which is a big zone and then hop from Droughlands and the first hafl of iron pine peak.
Once both Moonshade & droughlands are done u still have the latter half of iron pine and all of stillmoor and shimmersand laft to finish.
If anything the world opens up. shure the game isnt like wow with multiple continents with twenty freaking zones to quest through but it does open up.

Found the problem. You played Vanguard. Just let it die already man. Not sure when Rift sub forum became the recruiting page for Vanguard, but I see a lot of you guys basically copy and pasting each other.
I actually have a better solution:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%3AAdderall
If you have trouble reading quest, then stop bothering Rift/WoW sub forums and go wait on the STar Wars sub forums. They read the quest to you. Obviously it does not matter anymore if this adds tremendous amounts of time to the content releases, but the ADD/ADHD generation is apparently taking over MMO's.
The hilarious part is the same people do not have the attention span to read the quest, but they also will not have the patience to wait extended periods of time for new content to be voiced over. Talk about irony.
Here is another interesting find:
Search "Why vanguard sucked?" in google and I get roughly 755,000 results detailing why
http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&source=hp&q=why+vanguard+sucked%3F&pbx=1&oq=why+vanguard+sucked%3F&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=1989l5050l0l5832l20l17l0l3l3l0l249l2300l2.10.3l15l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=e7cad2287860ab4d&biw=1100&bih=485
Vanguard and DAoC fans seem to be the most bound and determined to ressurect those games that they relentlessly pounce on any new game that appears on the market and pray it fails.
Here is an idea. Watch for my post. I keep the board updated with every content release. It will save you money. Only one of your complaint they fixed was making the crafting worthwhile, but apparently not on Vanguard levels whatever that means.
Despite popular belief of Vanguard fans not all of us played it because we heard Sony was going to let it die. If you could go into detail about why the crafting/questing/leveling system was so revolutionary it would help someone like me.
It's easy to get a group, especially when you hit t2.
I also think the crafting system sux. Not the crafting itself, it's the same as most mmo's out there.
It's how you get the recipes that are actually worth making. Why cant they make crafting quests for recipes?
70 monk eq1
80 bruiser eq2
43 druid wow
Currently playing : rift
And this is why i only craft consumables in themepark mmos.
All of the crafts in these types of games are worthless unbless you're making potions, runes or something that is constantly needed.
I kind of wish they would add in more consumable craft type jobs. one of the things wow has going for it is that its consumable crafting is rather good.

This is why it pays to actually play the game or atleast read the updates I post:
*Take my word raiders are crying about this change
http://forums.riftgame.com/official-rift-news/patch-notes/236198-rift-1-4-8-00am-pdt-8-3-11-na-1-00am-gmt-4-08-11-eu.html
CRAFTING
* New recipes are available on the Armorsmith, Outfitter, Weaponsmith, and Artificer artisan store merchants. These are new Epic crafted items with set bonuses. Each set includes 2 pieces of armor, 1 weapon, and 1 ring to complete the set. Recipes can be purchased for Plaques.
* Recipes for new materials are available from the various profession trainers for 20 platinum - Enchanted Shadethorn Lumber, Tempered Orichalcum Bar, Steel-Stitched Leather, Bolt of Radiant Witchweave, and Infinite Essence. Each recipe has a 24 hour cooldown and are used in new production recipes.
* Crafting trainers now sell new reagents needed for the new recipes: Ethereal Flux, Magical Oil, Enchanted Lacquer, and Endless Dust. Foraging trainers now sell reagents.
Some people were saying the world 'opens up' in the mid 30's, where as I feel the way you do in this manner. I could deal with the grind through the 20s, but something seemed to happen at 30 that just began to really drag the whole thing. If the world really 'opened up', then I wouldn't have minded it. One of the biggest draws for me in a game is to have multiple places for me to go at each level and explore new places. But offering 2-3 places for each level post 35 doesn't really help in this game, because there is something too repetitive, even in different places. This is coming from an ex-EQ vet who knows well about the grind. I think part of the problem was that levelling was never levelling for the next level, it was just about getting to 50. There was no real satisfaction in gaining a new level, because it was seemingly insignificant, because each level would go by too quickly to really feel invested (this is all subjective, of course).
I played the game from beta till around may. I ended up with 1 50 and a whole bunch of 30 somethings. Once I got to 50, it was apparrant that the class system and grinding was not what I was looking for (another DPS race), so that was that. Games will have what you want, and others won't.
Trouble reading quests, how on earth did you came up with that?
The point with RIFT is that you dont HAVE to read quests they are so easy and lit up on the map as a christmas tree that a 5 year old can complete them, I wrote that in my post but for some strange reason you manage to turn that into I don't read quest
Speaking of ADD/ADHD, have you trouble understand my post?
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
Your post made atleast 5 references to Vanguard under a pretty big assumption that your target audience played Vanguard. Tis game was targetted at WoW players and chipping away at that Behemoth with insane amounts of disgrunteled players.
Honestly I got no idea what you are talking about when you say Vanguard because I was told by my friends to avoid it because it was being completely ignored by SoE and was released 2 years too early.
My reference to Vanguard was about challenging quests deep crafting, that's why I talked about Vanguard, If quests in Rift was more challenging and more diverse I would be still playing, not as it is now, half asleep you can complete a quest, they feel hollow and emty they are all the same, always kill 8 mobs, always pick up 5 glowy dosen't matter how epic the quest text potray the quest it's stil on easymode.
I know Hartman have sead prior to Rifts release that Rift is not about quests it's about endgame and hunting rifts, but what i've have gathered is that endgame is is pretty boring and shallow, and hunting rifts, that novelty wore of early lvl 20 for me.
The world dosen't feel alive, even the mobs is placed so exact that a auto mob placement program must have been used when they populated the game.
Sounds like you enjoy Rift good for you, it's all about enjoyments, have fun with it.
On a side note, your friend was right a month ago but not today, SOE has announced they will put in more resources into Vanguard again and a dev team, a small team but atleast SOE finally understand that Vanguard is a goldmine, SOE was blinded, ignorant or plain stupid to understand what Vanguard can really do for thier company so they put most of thier resources in thier flagship EQ2 and put Vanguard on lifesupport.
First real bugfix update for vanguard today first update in over a year and people are comming back.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
This is like NCSoft West telling me they will suddenly make Aion better. It does not change the fact they shit all over me for two years with my trust. SoE is no different especially thanks to those pricks I had to get a new credit card thanks to their LULZY security.
It is kind of crazy because why should we trust they will not pull the same crap in a few months with Vanguard. Most of the critics of Vanguard are "What would Vanguard look like if it as run by a betetr dev?"
Vangaurd was the true heir apparent to Everquest, it really goes to show how great of a producer Mr. Mcquaid was, problem was vision of the world was too big so instead of focusing on what was tangible they reached for the stars and lost.
Being an Eq1 vet and VG vet, trying to decipher the quests in VG was half the fun. EQ1 epic quest was not cut and dry I actually used the daily journal thing to type out my current quest stuff. The first mini blog as my wife likes to say.
With Rift the quests are got to big yellow circle, use item, kill, or gather then come back to me ... or go talk to dude 1 about this then return. your an errand boy in Rift the feel is not there when it comes to it. The dailiy rep grind sucks (hell i dont do dailies in any game unless i need money). After playing Rift for a while and being 50 since early April, I am now raiding and honestly raiding for 2 hours 3 nights a week pretty much is my play time.
