RIFT released four (SIX months not four! sorry) months ago.
It opened 99 servers between NA/EU.
The games seen a decline to the point of only have 60 active servers with the rest being designated to Trial player creation only.
With the release of GW2 and SWTOR in the next 3-8 months will this game be crushed under the wake of the two super mmo giants?
Right now Rifts population seems steady with 1.4 and talk of AA and solo/duop instances in 1.5 and new questing zones later on.
But will that be enough?
I personally dont know, so im asking you guys.

Why do you care?
Because i play RIFT, pre-ordered SWTOR and am looking forward to GW2.
So i was curious to see what other peoples opinion would be on the subject.

If only every MMO started dying the moment a new MMO is released, we would be left with couple of MMOS. This topic makes no sense.
It won't kill it. They might hurt the player base numbers when they first releases but Rift will survive. Trion seems to have their act together so I expect them to solidify their niche in the mmo industry.
i dont really care about games getting "killed." but it is my opinion that yes, absolutely, superfluous games like Rift, Aion and TERA will get killed by the 2 giants. acting together, TOR and GW2 will probably take many many people away from WoW as well. when it comes to allocating time (not money), i think many people will prefer to play GW2 over other fantasy-based MMO's. everyone and their grandma will most likely be subbed to TOR though, at least in the beginning.
A game getting killed to me is basically turning into what warhammer is a game near death with only 4 servers left out of god knows how many.
Or a game forced to go F2p because it cant hang with the competition.
Obviously it wont shut down. hell EQ and UO are still around.

I do not think so. SWTOR is a sci fi, GW2 will be B2P. I dont see why it would kill a P2P fantasy game.
P2P games usually kill themselfs, only the good ones have a slow painless death.
Instead of asking yourself whether they will kill a specific game, have a look back or remember the times when other big titles (including Rift) were releasing and the same questions were asked "will X game kill Y game?". Now have a look at all those games and see how many have actually been killed (to me that means shutting down) or are on their very last legs. None. I can think of a couple which are indeed on their last legs but that is due to lack of effort or mismanagement, not something other games have caused.
All older games take a hit whether permanently or tempararily when newer ones release but it very rarely has as much of an impact as people seem to expect.
Edit - I just realised your poll asks the complete opposite question than the title of your thread. I only mention it as it's likely to cause errors in voting for some therefore skew the vote
Killing a game means from 300k-400k subs to below the criticam mass to be able to survive, however many (or few) that may be. I hope not for Rift's sake, though it is quite possible that games will have to fold.
Waiting for Guild Wars 2, and maybe SWTOR until that time...
GW2 is not a sub model so I can't seeing having that much of a direct effect on RIFT. And they are under no obligation to provide any further content.
SWTOR is looking more and more like a tarted up KOTOR, yes it may initially have a effect on all MMO's, but think it may end up with its Niche group of followers.
I think with Rifts amazing content updates, it will keep itself steady through this period and start to really shine next year, they have some great stuff on the horizon to grab people in Trion are soon to be a company to be reakoned with when they start down the entertainment route with syfy
I voted it will survive, quite easily.

I kind of hope this happens i really like RIFT but hate its current Raid or die direction.
Something that trion is working on to imporve. i would like them to keep enough players so they could turn the game away from being this hardcore centric raid focused affair.
My plans are to continue playing RIFT, while trying a month of SWTOR and playing one of those full time while keeping GW2 my second mmo.

As much as I enjoy Rift...it really doesn't stand much of a chance against those 2. Will Rift shut down? Probably not, but it will see a severe decrease in their paying playerbase.

Rift has its own unique place in the world of mmorpg land and that will not change ever. Its a great game and has done very well. Looking at disasters like earthrise and ffxiv, and games that failed to live up to expectations like star trek online and warhhammer online only makes rifts accomplishments more pronounced in the tough landscape I guess hehe.
Its far more likely that Rift took subs from world of warcraft in my eyes then either gw2 or swtor will ever take from rift.
Simple answer: No
Reasoning: SWToR is remoing choices from MMO's. Yes they are pushing the RPG part of the MMORPG thingy, but it sound more single player the more I hear about it. I mean come on guys companions are basically digital friends.
No dual spec. They are not launching with cross server war fronts. People are going to bitch and moan about the graphics (we all know this is coming), the content updates MIGHT take forever because of the voice acting. EA is running the show and god knows if they will magically no screw up. It follows the Trinity model and everyone already knows damn well that means tanks/healers will not be played as much a dps...I mean come on guys. They will need cross server LFG and I doubt it will ever happen because Star Wars fans are hard headed.
GW2: PvP game with pve sprinkled in. Entire end game on the pve side is based on some 5 mans with various story lines and dynamic events. This has not and will never be enough for people at end game. If you say it is then you are blatantly ignoring years upon years of games that failed because of this set-up.
Trion is dropping content updates every single month. No excuses. They are flat out putting Blizzard to shame on their dev pace. They have already pissed all over the idea that transfers should cost money and revealed every greedy SOB company out there for what they are for charging for this.
They are about to add Single/Duo instance into the game. Last I check SWToR does not have this and GW2 has something like this I thinkkkkkk. This is stuff they announced like 2 months ago and it is already being put into the game.
You should change the name to "Can WoW survive GW2 and SWToR?". WoW is about to get it's population completely gutted by those two games. Blizzard has been making 500 MILLION DOLLARS A QUARTER and they still charge for ridiculous stuff that should have been free years ago. Now they want to put in more premium services. They seem to care more about cash shop vanity mounts, then actual content. They deserve what they get.
You should have another option like weaken it. Cause I definately think they will loose subs to these two.
The word ever above is a bit extreme. I personally think Rift will lose a good many subscriptions upon the release of both games, with some people returning after the complimentary one month. I think Rift will remain an active player in the "theme park" genre, but unless it continues to add new features and functionality (not just content), it will eventually be left behind as new "shiney" games are released.
nha the first 6 month are the worst for games!cost vs income ,after 6 month if it did fair it will do good
from the number i see in xfire they wont have issue at all!oh it wont be a wow or a gw2 but it will do better then eq2 witch has been around for years!
gw2 by the way as 12 month of dev in front of them before they release anything before that and player will probably find lot of issue with the game!
It might not kill it completely, but it will have a major impact on the games subs and I would suspect that Trion will look to turn it into a f2p game as their subs drop even more. To the OP, Rift was released MArch of 2011, that means it has been live for 6 months. I know some people do not think xfire is a good measure of how well a game is doing, but if you look at Rift today from where it was 6 months ago it is now ranked below Aion for hours played. In another 6 months, once GW2 and SW:ToR is out I suspect Trion will be doing whatever it takes to keep their game alive and one way of doing that is to go f2p.
oh good catch, you're right it has been 6 months...
Damn time flys doesnt it?

Yes, they will. Rift has always been nonthing more then a filler mmo till the big boys come out. LMAO
Aion 4 completely lop sided servers with no dev team and still an extreme grind
Rift 60 servers and over 30 of them were reading high pop last count as of 8/10/2011. You tell me which is doing better. X-fire is a horrible way to count number. According to x-fire WoW is losing all it's subs to League of Legends.
well its no secret that Rift took the majority of Aions NA/Euro subs.
Half of my guild are from Aion and while thats no proof or anything it at the very least shows me that its had an impact.
Most of the wow people i know went back to WoW with that Firelands patch a couple months ago

Yes. They won't shut down but you'll see a MAJOR decrease in the population.
Anyone who denies this, you haven't been around too long.
I never assumed Rift will have a long lifespan either way. *shrug* But that's just my opinion. It's like WAR. Fun a while and then it burns itself out. TOR and GW2 will just be the final nails in the coffin.
