No way, but those two won't do the population of any MMO out now any good. They will casue the mmo population to be even more spread thinly than it already is.
But you do get more and more choice...choice to play on a MMO server with less and less players.
Rift has its own unique place in the world of mmorpg land and that will not change ever. Its a great game and has done very well. Looking at disasters like earthrise and ffxiv, and games that failed to live up to expectations like star trek online and warhhammer online only makes rifts accomplishments more pronounced in the tough landscape I guess hehe.
Its far more likely that Rift took subs from world of warcraft in my eyes then either gw2 or swtor will ever take from rift.
The word ever above is a bit extreme. I personally think Rift will lose a good many subscriptions upon the release of both games, with some people returning after the complimentary one month. I think Rift will remain an active player in the "theme park" genre, but unless it continues to add new features and functionality (not just content), it will eventually be left behind as new "shiney" games are released.
Yea but what mmos have we seen recently that have done as well as rift fall off the radar. Even when something comes to an end its how they got there that matters. Rift did well, it was fun, It will always be fun and bring new people into it. Its a shining acheivement I think and I for one really enjoyed my time with the game and look forward to coming back to it after the dust settles.
I would definetly say, and I keep thinking it since I played Rift that people that are getting there emotions running with delusions of grandeur. What exactly my thoughts were you ask when I played Rift. I new right then that Rift was going to be the best mmo out of the 3 and Im sure I dont need to tell anyone which Im refering to. Why you ask, well maybee someone else thinks this also. I just get that feeling, swtor I would never miss in million years playing, even if it was worse then Pirates of the Caribean online but I already got my fix on at an 11 with star wars and galaxies. Now for the other game, which we dont need to say the name, im sure there have been plenty of people like me arguing that the first one was a real mmo to mmo vets that never payed attension to it. I dont think people are going to take it seriously since its not your typical mmo like wow and aion with your skills the way they are suppose to be. Its painfully obvious, although gw and areanet are more solid then chevy trucks when it comes to keeping players playing the game and giving people something to do and gw2 will be no exception and it will be on an entirely new level which I lookfoward to as well.
I never assumed Rift will have a long lifespan either way. *shrug* But that's just my opinion. It's like WAR. Fun a while and then it burns itself out. TOR and GW2 will just be the final nails in the coffin.
There is no denying that Rifts population has been decreasing the passed few months.
But to say its like WAR isnt true. maybe it could be in a year or so but remember wars population died very quickly.
I remember playing WAR and one month it was jam packed and the next everyone was gone and i was forced to transfer my characters... Nothing like that has happened in RIFT.
GW2 is not a sub model so I can't seeing having that much of a direct effect on RIFT.
life is about time time time. people wont have time to play 2 or 3 mmo's. when someone realizes theyre having fun in one game, they will play that game.
You should change the name to "Can WoW survive GW2 and SWToR?". WoW is about to get it's population completely gutted by those two games. Blizzard has been making 500 MILLION DOLLARS A QUARTER and they still charge for ridiculous stuff that should have been free years ago. Now they want to put in more premium services. They seem to care more about cash shop vanity mounts, then actual content. They deserve what they get.
Right, because the MMO currently with more content, 11 million subsribers, and a customer base that has been defiantly loyal to that IP for years is the one that needs to worry, not the up-and-coming inferior clone that really hasn't added a single innovation to the genre and is already hemmoraging subscribers after only a few months on the market.

All games compete with one another, even ones outside sub-genres.
Every developer is competing for your time.
As an example Right now all of my free gaming time is going to two games Terraria and Space Pirates And Zombies.
Two open ended single player games while I havent logged into rift in five days and am about to let my subscription end.
So yes GW2 could have an affect on Rift just like games like Diablo 3, Skryim and Dota2 can.
As for the original question, SWTOR and GW2 won't "kill" Rift, per se, because I do think Trion is a strong enough company to keep the game afloat, but they are going to see a major dent in their numbers, and they will be hurt. Anyone who argues this point has simply not been paying attention.
BioWare is going to release a solid, polished game. That much is a given. SWTOR will not be revolutionary, and it will not be a game-changer in terms of offering innovation. They are going after the WoW themepark crowd, just like Rift did. And that will be enough. Solid gameplay and polish in addition to carrying the mother of all IPs (Star Wars) will be enough to take quite a few customers from both Rift and WoW. The difference is that Blizzard has created such a juggernaut that they can much more easily absorb the blow than Rift can. One of the posters earlier in this thread said that after the initial sales die down, SWTOR will have a "niche core" of customers still playing it. Newsflash: The "niche" associated with the Star Wars IP will be millions of screaming nerds. That's a pretty big damn niche. All they need to do is release a polished game and provide solid content updates to hold onto them. SWTOR will basically provide the same kind of thing that LOTRO does: Nothing game-changing, nothing spectacular, but a solid, polished game, and the backing of tons of fanboys.
ArenaNet, like BioWare, is also a solid company. What GW2 offers is something completely different than what WoW, Rift , and SWTOR offers. And that alone is going to make it a very successful game. The innovation that they are bringing to the table is going to attract a ton of curious gamers. And if their dynamic events prove to be half as good as they claim, it's going to put all of the boring, drab, Rift invasions to shame. I'm still not 100% sold on them being able to base a levelling system off of dynamic events, but we'll see. If it works, this game will be a monster.
Rift is, quite frankly, a boring game. Nothing in the way of true innovation, and nowhere near the content of WoW at any point during the life cycle of your average character. It takes about a month for the slowest levellers to reach cap, and then they are sent on a WoW-esque chase for dungeon tokens and gear grinds. Unfortunately, they don't do it as well as WoW, and the end-game content, which comprises nearly ALL of the updates that we've seen from Trion, simply isn't deep enough to keep people from leaving. After about 5-6 months, they've already merged from 90 servers down to 60 (And yes...the public test servers were nothing more than a merge for dwindling populations), and they will be further dwindled once SWTOR and GW2 hit. And the same thing will happen with WoW, although they can absorb it better. Trion is doing the right thing by pumping out content, but as of right now, the content they are releasing isn't the kind that's going to keep their game fresh. If most of your game is based on endgame, but your endgame is dull and boring, you've got problems. However, the Alernate Advancement idea is a major step in the right directtion. If they can truly deliver a great alternative to the gear grinds at endgame, this could be a game-saver for them. IMO, Alternate Advancement needs to be mandatory for future MMOs at some point. As of right now, the only games that do it, and do it well, are EQ2, AOC, and to a lesser extent, LOTRO.
Bioware is about to release a set back in the genre and the hype is going to kill it in the first month. They think not having dual spec is new and cool. They think not having cross server war fronts is cool. They think 4 party instance is new and inventive.
Outside of the story that game is about to get hammered. I am not touching SWToR with a 10 foot pole until it proves to me it is actually an MMORPG

Nothing BioWare will give us with SWTOR will be inventive. Just like nothing Trion gave us with Rift was inventive. As long as they have a polished game and a solid release, they will do very well. And they have a monster IP to back it up, as well as a company in BioWare that will make any necessary adjustments to their game to keep it fresh. And unlike Rift, it will will take more than two weeks to get to level cap, so they'll have plenty of time to crank out more content as they need to.
Originally posted by Sulaa Nah, Rift will take a hit in subsfiption numbers but it will survive imho.
^^This. It's one of the reasons Trion is adding Solo and Duo raids to the game for alternate advancement. Their raider population is going to take a hit (1) and (2) they already have people who want to play the game, but don't want to depend on 8 or 9 other people to raid.
If they offer something the other games do not have, and the other games boil down to raid grind gear collection, why not play the game you know you like?
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
It's been mentioned before but I will also like to point out that OP's poll is trash because it asks the exact opposite question that thread title states. A lot of people probably voted the wrong way, and the only reason why I'm concerned at all is because this turned out to be a really good thread on the subject.
Yes, they will. Rift has always been nonthing more then a filler mmo till the big boys come out. LMAO
The big boys are about to have to play catch up with Rift. Built in fraps, single/duo instances, dev speed that blows other MMO's out of water and free transfers. Try and keep up Bioware we all know they will have that cash shop up and running from day 1.

yep sadly most games are going that way soon all games will have cash shop me i dont care really. as long as i am happy spending my money for fuffyness i am happy.
It prettymuch seems like everyone in the world is going to subscribe to SWToR when it first comes out, so I imagine all the other MMOs will take a hit, at least initially. After the newness wears off, however, I suspect the population will spread back out and most games will survive with levels close to what they have now.

I doubt SWTOR will have as many subs as Rift did after six months. Being heavily story based is fine in the short term but it won't have any longevity. It will be dying within three months of launch.
You can't really make a comparison with GW2. With no sub, the only measure of success will be how many boxes it sells at launch. I suspect that will be a huge number. How many people are still playing after a few months isn't really important as long as another huge bunch of boxes are sold when the expansions come out.
I don't see any one game having much effect on Rift in the long term but the accumulative effect is that is will slowly be overtaken by newer games. I already played Rift for several months but am bored with it now, have SWTOR pre-ordered and am sure to buy GW2 too. There's always a new kid on the block.

SWTOR and GW2 will absolutely coexist with flying colors.

Thats what the OP means. Killing a MMO is a phrase, not to be taken literal. Just like a "Tank" role, or "WoW Clone"
they all are terms. not literal meanings.
