Xsyon is a scam

illmaculateillmaculate Member UncommonPosts: 11

Easy money grab for Notorious Games with no intention of spending money to further develop the game to a playable state. Total scam.

If you agree, say why. If not, also state why you think so.

The feature page, containing blatantly false information, remains as the only way to read about the game without being a Xsyon forum historian.

Nearly every system previously discussed at length by the developers was never implemented or even brought up again.

They sold preorders weeks before their initial release date in Q1 2010 before decided it might actually take until Q2 2011 to release the nowhere-near-finished game

They actively lie to their customers; It's a scam.

You could start yourself with stating why? You make a rather unfounded claim here. I even doubt they make a hell of a lot of profit to invest anyway.

I don't think it is a scam. I think it launched with too many features incomplete, but to think they had some scheme to defraud potential customers, an investors, makes a lot of assumptions including that such a scheme, which would include building an engine, assets, writing, UI, sound, etc. would be profitable to create as a ruse. In other words, would creating all the work for fake, be cheaper than doing it for real? Especially considering that if they set out to fool people, they would be discovered at some point and risk law suits. It also assumes that all the staff and investors were in on this scheme and failed to leak information as to its falsity.

Occam's razor would suggest a simpler theory, that they wanted to do all these things for their stated reasons, but failed to do it well.

I remember when people used to say this was the best game in the world, the true sandbox and so...

Always wondered what happened to the hype, i guess it starts to show now.

I agree with astoria. Heck, I'll go one step further. For it to be a scam would be to give the developer a modicum of credit for having the skill to pull off something so elaborate. The sad truth is that the Xsyon team is just that inept...

I thought the same thing. So far (lacking punctuation) the title looks much closer to a statement then a question. So where are the OP's reasons?

    Are you suggesting coconuts migrate!?

People are crazy to keep giving these low budget companys their money. Its takes real money and real developers to make a real mmo. I am all for Sandbox but until I see something comming from an established game company that has the people and funding to make a true sandbox I am not touching these poor excuses. All of them look horrible so I dont see why people buy them.

Features page really needs to state that some systems are not implemented or fully working. That being said, I have come a long way since pre-order and have implemented and fixed a lot of things. The game is still nowhere near a complete game but they never said it was, thus why its called Prelude.

I will say they do communicate pretty well about updates and what they are working on. Its a small team that has already been replaced once so its hard to hold them to higher standards.

I don't think it is a scam at all since they aren't taking the money and running off. But I do understand the many frustrations that players have had to endure. It's moving along albeit at a very slow pace.

I was never interested really I am glad I stayed away and feel sorry for those who got shanghaied. I did however think it was very dodgy and one of reasons I did not buy it.

I dunno, I preordered, didn't like what I saw, let them keep the 40 bucks, was no big deal for me.

I don't recall them every promising to be more than what they displayed, though I never did spend any time reading the web/feature pages.

It's not a scam, it's a small indie team with a very slow development pace. They always gave back the money to everyone who asked for it without a word or making any difficulties. The OP is a hater who could have asked his money back long time ago, still he stayed and kept posting hating posts on the official forum...and they only banned him now, after more than a year. Finally. It's really pathetic that he comes to this forum to continue his mission here.

Xsyon is unfinished and needs a lot of work, but I just can't understand people who even pay money to be able to post on the Xsyon member forum although they hate the game and wish it to die asap.

There is certainly an element of extreme ineptitude, however to say that these guys haven't been deceptive is just untrue. Read the tlinked above. They admittedly recieved a MUCH higher reponse than they claimed they expected, yet development has stagnated.

It has NOT come a long way, since pre-orders thats an absurd thing to say. The only change that has had a positive effect on the game since launch has been architecture upgrades, which itself is incredibly simple and inconsiquential. Every other change, from item decay to scavenging changes, has resulted in a game thats even less playable.

The label Prelude doesnt change anything. They stated they would release a functional but shallow game and gave a plan for improvment going forward. The  product that was released was nonfunctional, and they haven't followed their plan in the slightest.

Why is it hard to hold them to higher standards? They recieved the attention of nearly every sandbox community, a lot of which preordered. Their response to this increase in demand? They have allegedly hired a 'combat specialist' and someone who would focus on the UI. Only very minor UI changes have been made, and the combat changes that were released only made the system even more awkward and less playable. They're done with the combat system by the way. It's being left at that and they're moving on to carts.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say with this post. "Yeah, I got scammed."?

You bought a product that was in someway misrepresented to you. Either out of pure apathy, falling for the ruse that changes are coming soon, or having a sick 'indie' appreciation mindset.... you let them keep the money. You got tricked out of your money -- you got scammed.

Again, read the link in the post above mine. This sort of response was very common.

I wouldn't be suprised if we all found later that we somehow installed a virus haha. This game has barely made any progress from beta to now. The game is so weak they even let people who pre ordered but arent paying their subscription fee still log on to add to the low population.

  • sk8chalifsk8chalif Member UncommonPosts: 666

I pre-Ordered the game with one of my friend,The game was totaly buggy and definitely not finish, and its was not what we thought its was. We still played the game 2 week,

After the 2 week passs, we both send a emal saying i want  a refund,. i got my money back the day after.so did my friend,

You could ask them refund anytime. most of the people i know who tryed it got refund to and saw that the game was totaly crap.

I have no idea how u did not noticed it ,Its was obvious

Honestly if you take the game for what it is, its actually not that bad. If you can get past being butthurt about the fact that a lot of the things it has claimed to be, it is not, it is actually quite enjoyable. I played Xsyon for 3 months, I built a little castle of my own, I had hours of fun shaping my camp site, building something truly unique. Its really more of a persistent world worm or minecraft as it is atm. I would still be playing and happily paying if there was more developement. Right now Im in wait-and-see mode, who knows, maybe a few months down the line i might play it again. I dont regret subscribing and spending money on this game, I had no preconcieved notions of what the game could deliver, so im not dissapointed and i dare say I got my moneys worth.

Tbh I dont find this post very constructive, Fuck, its easy enougth to throw stones when things dont work out, but you shouldnt berrate notorious for trying, thats just stupid. This is just the attitude that make it so hard to build something new and unique in this industry. Dry your eyes little one, leave the butthurt behind and go play something else. :)

Its not a finished game by any standard but It is most certainly NOT a scam.

Its an awefull lot of work this tiny independant developer have done to actually deliver the game they promised, they havent been able to but I am quite sure they tried to and intended to deliver, I think they tried very hard. Considering that they do refunds i think you should be very careful with your words, mister. No its not a scam or a fraud, its just not fisnished.

I woulnd't play it. I knew better because of the reviews. As for excuses, they have none other than the common "lack of funding".

    you guys are so funny

"Easy money grab for Notorious Games  ..."

easy money grab? do you have any idea how much money it had cost to get the game at least into the state it is now?

do you know why most of the mmorpgs fail? because it costs INCREDIBLE amount of money to build a mmorpg, especially 3d one.

" .... with no intention of spending money to further develop the game to a playable state."

really? patches are comming out almost every week. thats not what i imagine under "no intention of spending money to further develop the game to a playable state."

do you have any idea how much work is needed to make even a slightest feature work?

I will give you (all) a little advice: try to learn basics of some easy programming language (that can be achieved rather easily and relativly quickly) a try to program some really basic singleplayer game. you will see how much work it really is, and programming a mmorpg (or any other type of persistent client/server game) is MUCH worse. Not to mention the fact, that programming 3d for PC is nightmare because of completely different computers players have.

I have a programming as my hobby and over the years (even tho i did take a long break and only lately i started to program under windows, my main programing years ended with end of ms dos and end of 8bit computers era) i wrote quite a number of programs and trust me when i tell you - until you try it, you have no idea how much work can be even the most simple feature.

imho the most probable reason why xsyon was released in the state it was is really simple: they overrated their abilities and underestimated time and money they need to create a bug-free (well thats more or less myth, but lets say almost bug free)  and fully finished MMORPG.
