I think this game may be just what we are looking for...

It seems to have a very good backstory and an excellent diety based system that would allow for alliances or guilds to rally around certain gods to facilitate the pvp portion of the game.
The pricing info rgiven by the devs indicates the game will be moderately priced
Client Software free for all Beta testers
Dark Solstice Subscription $7.95 per month / $80 per year
definitely worth a look so head over to the site and see for yourself. This may finally replace EQ original or UO for those of us who still enjoy roleplaying and games with actual depth instead of the "next gen" MMOS that have delivered little more than rubbish grinding sessions.

I'm happy you found their site. I agree completely on the appeal. With the look of the latest big name games, it seems that all that is ever concentrated upon is the color and flash of a spell, or the photo-realistic backdrops. One could post a landscape scene from any of a number of popular games and without help, players would be hard pressed to identify the game. They are similar in so many ways.
It seems with Dark Solstice that they have gone after and achieved a look somewhere between cartoon and photo. Add that to what they are describing about gameplay, roleplaying, and community, and they have created a recipe for success at a bargain price. I am hoping that this game meets all of my high expectations. for it.

OMFG It's The Realm all over again!!!! This could be cool, this could be crap but I'm checking it out no the less.
Come to think of it.....
It is rather reminiscent of realm. I really like the attitudes of the devs and staff so far they seem to be genuinely interested in making a quality game that caters to many playstyles. The "2.5"D graphics really do look good as well.

I've checked it out, too. I play Realm now, but I'm willing to trade up for this game. If it delivers what they are promising, it's going to be awesome!
Heh maybe this game will be what the Realm never delivered, Realm version 4. If they do create a roleplaying friendly game, I'll be there.
They're definitely not your typical graphics style but I find that I like this look. It reminds me of great games like Quest For Glory, only with much better graphics & color.
Then again, it does make me wonder how one will interact with the world.

Yea.

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby
The lore about the 4 gods and the Dark Solstice itself is rather intriguing. There is a lot of potential here.
Graphics may be seen as low quality compared to other games, but I'm hoping the overall gameplay will provide that enjoyment pretty eyecandy does not.
It's worth a look, here's the FAQ compiled by Lydia - http://www.solsticeserver.com/MessageBoards/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1093
