When Planetside was first released I like many jumped on the wagon and started to love the game. I then noticed strange lag (at that time many suspected memory leaks or poor DIMM's) I then noticed it was hard to find a fight since the game had a few servers per location. Now I take it they combined servers? My questions to the current players who have been through it all.

  • If youve played for more then a year has the game mechanics improved beyond the 'get base' move to next base, original base now taken by enemy - endless circle. Basically are there more goals to the end game now?
  • Have the DEV's increased the games overall performance? better fps? less bugs?
  • Are the engineer certs still fun to play with? I always loved the turrents :)
  • Bottom line, if you played the game for over a year what keeps you going in the world of planetside?

The games just going to go downwards until SOE cancel it!

THe populations are going down and Corecombat, battleislands, new map and BFR's really killed it for many people!

Alot of the dev's left due to SOE making bad choices and alot of them devs were important like Smokejumper and Sporkfire

Personally Bfr's killed it for me and i wont ever go back unless they go

Man I remember those DEV's Spork and Jump, they left because of poor management? and how is the game taking a nose dive? This game was released in ...if I can remember 02? so after 3 years its barely hanging on? Im surprised to see so many people hate the new content (from what ive read) instead of enjoying new content. I mean thats what MMO's are all about new content!

What rock have you been under the past year ? The populations are not dropping, they are actually increasing quite steadily. The new patches coming out soon is really taking care of stuff in the right direction. Smokejumper wasnt nearly as good as Samhayne is currently, this guy gets shit done even though SOE isnt throwing as much cash on the game as before.
These days you can practically log onto Emerald anytime of the day and always get a big fight to participate in. Experiencepoints for supportclasses are coming, and so is an overhaul of the engine towards Direct X9

So please, check your facts before being "honest"

They play around with it too much tho : The Bfr's really ruined the foot zergs and made alot of vehicle useless, i still think after playing it not long ago. Even tho theres now as many, they still ruin the fun i used to have! The bailing function in aircrafts ruin it too, now you can't get too much damage or you cant bail! The pounder going back to AV sucks too and the surgile changes

This is what Smokejumper sent me after i emailed him :)

I don't think SOE will cancel PlanetSide. Mind you, I don't work there anymore, so it's just an opinion, but the game is low-cost to continue and *does* bring in profit, so it doesn't seem smart to cancel it.

However, SOE doesn't always do the "smart" thing, so all bets are off. ;)

Core Combat was a mistake, plain and simple. We told management that it was too soon to create an expansion and that adding more real estate to the game (new gaming areas) was a mistake due to what it would do with population density. They required us to create the expansion anyway, and then didn't allow us time to test it.

Thus, you got what you got. Not because the Dev team wanted it that way, but because the company needed cash.

We did the best we could, but 3.5 months is not long enough to create *and* test a full expansion product. And that's all we were allowed.

So...in short...I agree with you. Although I think there were some really good things that we added after launch, that expansion pack was an error. (I *do* think Core Combat could have been great if we'd been allowed to test and tweak it properly...but without any signficant public testing, it was doooooomed.)

Have fun with the game anyway and I wish you the best.

Wow man thanks for the email output, ex dev shedding some light on bad management. You know as soon as PS was released I thought to myself 'some other company will take the Planetside idea to a whole new level....years have passed and yet no company has stepped up to the challenge.

---Ya. its about the same i guess. take a base and move on to the next, I've never had much of the problem with this as it never seems to go the same or as you expect it too.---

---As a cloaker I still have quite a bit of fun with them if thats what you mean. but ya, they are bout the same as they have always been. they are adding support EXP and merits as well so that'll help alot for leveling without being a killwhore. And SamHayne has hinted to special equipment for dedicated Engineers.---

---Not sure what keeps me comin back. just a big fan of the game. When it all falls together and we manage to use tactics, its great. Just puts a big smile on my face blowing up someone with a boomer or knifing them.

Yes there are more goals, not just hack base and get exp.  You can add modules from caves to give you added bonuses.  Capturing caves also gives incentives.  Gme mechanics have improved and will continue to improve  - more tweaks to PS are in the works.

I actually left the game for a month soon after CC was released.  It caused my gaming rig to not work when ever I tried playiong for longer than 1hr.  I constantly CTD'd or my system just froze up.  Turns out it was a glitch in the CC programming that didn't like AMD's.  That has been fixed now.  I went back after just being gone a month and haven't looked back.  I no longer CTD, the game never freezes on me - ever - and I get upwards of 90+ fps in the largest of battles.  Is the game performance better than it use to be - yes.  Is it better for people with 1.3ghz cpu's and 512 of ram - no.   You need at a minimum of 1gig - 2 is awesome!  Get a 2.0ghz cpu( Pentium 3 or better or equivalent - I have an AMD FX53 on an awesome Asus Mobo).

Next to sniping CE is my fave.  They have mentioned giving us CE love in the near future.  Like deployable manned turrets, deployable medical terminals, and inviso bubbles.  :)

What keeps me going?  I absolutely love PS.  I have played ever MMORPG and or bet's them from UO to EQ2 and none of them can touch Planetside for sheer fun.  I do not play games to go to "wirtual work or a virtual job"  - Planetside is none of that.  It is fun from the first time you sign on and keeps on going, and going, and going.

WoW so much negative towards PS.
First of all, population is not going downhill. It did went down right after BFR release, but it has been nothing but increasingever since BFRs got fixed. Nowadays, at least 2-3 conts are locked at all times.

All those who hate core combat, relax, CC has been pretty much absorbed into PS. There are often battles in the caves, but main fights are always upstairs. BFRs were nerfed so they arent much of a threat, in fact, one single trooper can kill BFR fairly easily. What I like about BFRs is that they did make landbattles worthwhile, and they pretty much stopped foot zerg. Todays battles are more intense, more lengthy and sometime it can take a whole day of non stop fighting over one single base.

PS started off a bad foot with all the latest patches, but SOE pretty much fixed all balancing issues.

About goal, there isnt realy much of a goal besides total domination (capture all bases) which is almost impossible to reach. There is more to PS then just go in and kill what you see, there are lots of strategies and tactics that soldiers, squads and outfits use to beat the odds or turn the tide of battle. Quick precision strikes, backdoor drops, generator squads, max rushes, backhacks, techplant killers are just a few of different tactics you can use. In my personal opinion, PS in general did get better. Fights are no longer decided by who has more troops/vehicles.

Even one Bfr is too much!

I'd say to new people then yeah try it, but to veterans who didn't like the changes then don't come back.

You obviously haven't given Planetside another chance recently.  BFRs are not the overpowered all-conquering beasts they used to be - they're really just another sort of tank with very definite weaknesses which is why you don't see that many of them.

Are you man enough to accept that you might be wrong, and take a free trial to see how it's changed?

    in my opinion.....

If you want large scale fps action then you would be better off picking up a copy od battlefield 2. It will support 100 players in a large scale battle so you get all the fun of PS without the monthly fee.

Sorry, you're way off the mark.  It's only 64 max with BF2 on a tiny map, compared to 399 per continent on Planetside.

Honestly man, there hasnt been many game making additions to the game since release. EVerything has sucked.

BFrs are annoying, these planets ...meh...the caverns are nearly useless.

The game was better when people asked for your BR/CR before letting you into a group, and that is sad.

So, everything sucks?  That'll be why literally thousands of us are having fun playing Planetside every evening then?

Indeed. After the server join Ive seen reduction in amount of people. But after a while, ive seen a steady increase of people. it used to be be bad, barely 1-2 conts were locked at one time. nowadays its 1-2cont lock per empire, so that means 3-4 conts can be locked at one time in peek hours. That only proves people are coming back to PS, and new people are joining in. I also see a lot of cave activities, so no, caves are not useless. Each faction gives a pretty unique experience so when i get bored with lasher or Jackhammer I go with machine gun.

For all those who are questioning coming back because of CC "ruining" the game, BFR's can be taken out with 1 person with Deci's and jammers (with skill).  More than one = BFR has no chance.  Cave fights are a lot of fun since it's a change of scenery and you never know where an enemy may be hiding.  Not only that, but with the Cave locks, the CC weapons and vehicles bring a lot of unique possibilities to the fights above ground, making it more interesting and exciting.  I, for one, just joined about a month ago and I have found NOTHING that is "over-powered" or "unfair", and if there is, it's usually fixed quickly.  If you're considering coming back, then download the 7 day free trial and see for yourself; you have nothing to lose.  In my opinion, it's the best mmo game out if you're looking for raw fun and the thrill of battle.

BFR's added alot to the game, as with any change, some losers just can't handle anything that makes them adapt.

They were used to just driving their planes around killing helpless grunts with no risk.

I do not drive a BFR, but have gunned them, they are easy to kill.

I have been playing since Beta and i have never stopped playing. There is just 1 key thing in my opinion that will make you enjoy planetside. Join a very organised outfit with a voice over ip server. I Have been with HMX-1 since the beginning and I love every second of it. If you wanna see a good planetside video of organisation. Watch this I highy recommend that you watch it all the way through. Thanks Guys

Let me tackle this one in an orderly fashion.

If you are looking for a game that has a start and an end, I believe you are in the wrong area of games. Isn't the fact that the game is endless one of the key characteristics of an mmorpg?

Personally, I have had a more enjoyable and better performing gaming experience

    Engineers are always fun image

Now for the big one: the bottom line. What is it about this game that keeps me coming back? Well it is the best pvp game I have ever played. It is damn fun to kill that sniper who just got to a great sniping spot and to know that he may very well be cursing and banging on his desk because he has to respawn.

And personally, I really enjoy the new content. And absolutely love the battle islands because he keeps the battles close together. Another super big plus is the support experience that you can now gain from doing "support" tasks. ie- healing, repairing, hacking, galaxy drops, setting up an ams etc etc.   and here is a very good site if you are curious about the number of subscriptions in todays mmos: www.mmogchart.com Notice that at the end of July there are about 55k subscriptions, which may seem low compared to the top games, but remember that you are always around these people. As long as you stay with a fight, the game constantly feels massive. For example, just yesterday the planet of Esamir was in constant battle for 6+ hours. But should you go wandering out into the wilderness don't expect to find much =P (maybe some pve is in order?)
