I have a quite ignorant view I suppose on this subject. These are role playing games right? So I figure people are gonna make the character they wanna be. I usually pick a warrior whos big and strong: while I am 6' 3" in real life, I can't go around killing people and wouldn't want to (mostly image) but in game I can do that and it's what I like to be.
I figure guys who play female characters want to be girls. I have never made a female character because I don't wanna be a girl. But lots of guys make girl characters and say "I'd rather stare at my female toon for hours no end than a guy one." That is fairly valid I suppose, although if I wanna stare at a girl I have my gf and plus real life girls are always gonna look better.
I used to say "If you make a girl toon, you're gay!" That's a little too ignorant for me as I suppose I have reluctantly grown up over the years. Now I say "If you make a girl toon, you wanna be a girl."
Still ignorant, but hey, I'm evolving slowly.image

Why you got to be gay to play as a female? I do it and I'm straight

I think they get hit on WAY to much, whenever im grping with another girl and another guy, 99% of the time the guy is hitting on the girl, even when im screaming for help cause im gettin my ass kicked, they still just sit back and throw out crappy pick up lines and still dont get the picture that SHES NOT INTERESTED! its just annoying. now im not sayin ive never hot on a girl ingame, hell, all guys have, but i dont hit on every friggin girl that comes by

The simple answer is 'YES!' and it's true. I think we do get hit on too much, but I can't complain as I could easily play as a guy character if I cared. In truth I do have several male characters on various games, but being a girl is so much more fun! (we have cuter stuff)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I also would like to add that guys shouldn’t hit on girls in games because they are often played by guys. Like my brother who plays girls all the time 'cause he gets free stuff. (I'm to blame though 'cause I used to force him to make female characters so I could play too)

You know ma'am, I never knew femals still played videogames around that elderly age (I know my dad is somewhere around that age and he owns the Xbox)....well, my mom is around your age (i think) and she sticks to Ms. Pac Man....so i guess that counts.

    ELDERLY !??   My goodness !!

Well I guess thats why guys stop hitting on me then when I tell them my age.

Oh well I guess when you are in your teens over 40 seems old.  I must admit I thought so when I was a teenager.  image

Yes, yes I do. It only really gets one my nerves when its guys hitting on guys in girl toons who made girl toons for the express purpose of getting free stuff off of guys that hit on girl toons. Its like homosexual prostitution and pedophilia at the same time.

This just gets creepier the more I think about it...

So anyway, I agree. You'd have to be insane to hit on a girl in an MMO. There is like a 10% chance of it REALLY being a girl. Secondly, there is like a .01% chance of the girl being impressed by being hit on in an MMO. Even if you manage to get through those statistical improbabilities, how likely is it that a chick that let herself get picked up in an MMO is not going to have some kind of problem.

Its not impossible but you might as well give your bank details to all those lost Princesses and Finance Ministers who need to steal $25,000,000 from Zanabwimkistan or whatever. Who are actually Nigerian kidnappers.

    I have been very bad...

I have created female character to SWG. It is my first female character in serious roleplaying game - and most likely also last one. I was worst case scenarion for all those geeks who are looking real life love from game - I was roleplaying female character that was acting like female (or as female seem to act from males point of view).

I wanted to create female character, because I wasn't never tried this "side" of the story. Are those rumors real that female characters are getting more tips and gifts from other players? How well I can roleplay female characters? What kind reactions males have - before they figure out and after they figure out? Also female characters are much more sexy than male characters - and this alone did make playing buggy game like SWG more enjoyable.

I started as "exotic" dancer and hairstylist (image designer). I used all tricks to seduce other males: giggles, hugs, blowkisses, chat smilies and generally acted like males are expecting females to act (shopping clothes and doing other silly things). During first month I think that 3-4 new romances in week with male characters, generous tips and expensive gifts.

Only rule was that when another player started to be too serious, I pulled my ultimate trigger "I am male in RL". Most of guys stopped romance to that spot, some did want to continue roleplaying romance, some collapsed mentally - and some didn't believe that I was male in RL. Most annoying guys were sending tells almost every minute (like "What are you doing now, hun?", "Can I come there, hun?", etc). Those who didn't believe that I am male in RL - though that I am saying that only, because I didn't like from them ("She is just saying that she is male in RL...").

After first month I stopped playing as honey girl and added warning text to my character bio. Mostly because I did feel bit sorry about those guys who mentally collapsed - they were already in edge before meeting my character. Also constant tells and other love "shows" from guys started be annoying. I also joined to good guild and did make good friends, and I didn't want to cause too many mental breakdowns for them.  Three months later I was stopped doing exotic dancing, hairstyling and other jobs that normal "bloke" will never ever want to do. I was still roleplaying my character using occasionally seduction tricks - but not so aggresive anymore and mostly with my guild members who know that I am male and want to roleplay.

In the end I am very surpised how many mentally ill players are playing in MMORPGs. Some of them have really lost they contact to real life. It is also surprising how easy it is predict average Joe's actions when meeting "honey girls" - absolutely no imagination or work contribution. I have also watched how some guys just don't give up when RL female says "no". These einsteins just keep sending tells and their love confessions for these unlucky RL females, like they could change their mind. It is amazing how big lies people can tell for them self. Ignoring all facts and unable to do basic selfawareness functions are very common among MMORPG players.

Thats the point of role-playing. You're ROLE PLAYING as the opposite sex so you did nothing wrong...

In perfect environment it would be perfectly ok. Unfortunately there are guys who have lost their self control and should be mental hospital instead of playing MMORPGs.

I've been playing mmo's for I guess a little over 5 years now and as a RL female I've mostly created female characters and I can't really say I've been treated "differently" then male characters unless I came right out to told everyone I was female, then you get the creepy guys that just kinda leech on to you and don't let go.

On the off chance that I did get given something based on my characters gender, and it does happen now and then I just don't think as often as people imagine, I would just give it back and say thanks but I make my own way. I think it all boils down to character, if as a female character you go around flirting with every rich gnome you see your going to be treated as such in return but if you make an effort to just be another one of the players, again, you'll be treated as such.

It's the same for RL, I go to a few local LAN's where the guy's play UT 2004, BF and etc... When I first started going there, if I would have acted all Gurly, flirty and sensitive I would have never been accepted for who I am, just another gamer :)

This kind of behavior is what makes actual female characters have to endure so much abuse. I don't know any real life female characters that behave like that and when you do it ingame, you are just validating it to those troglodyte players who believe it's how females act (or SHOULD act; and that's even more depressing.)

I don't understand why anyone would do this anyway. When I play a game I don't want things for free or special treatment from other, stupider, players. Like someone else already posted; it's like prostitution. Don't you have any integrity? If I get some rare armor or special item off a monster or from a quest, I like to know I earned it. That is the only reason I would wear it. Otherwise, it is just a collection of pixels that means nothing to me.

In single player offline games I almost always make female characters
just because they generally look cooler and have a more sleek streamline
form. I mean it's obvious the designers put more time into the female
characters' appearance than the males since, after all, the female form
sells. Online, however, I have and will NEVER create a female character
(btw if you hadnt figured it out by now I'm a guy IRL) simply for the
reason that I DONT WANT guys hitting on me and I know it would happen if
I did. Though for some reason, in every MMORPG I seem to play with maybe
one exception, my best ingame friend ends up being a female character.
I, of course, never assume that they are in real life what they appear
to be in game particularly because there seems to be a shortage of
female gamers, though I've known a couple and the numbers are growing.
In fact MMORPG's were first introduced to me by a RL girl gamer friend
    of mine.

Also I have been hit on by female avatars. Some are male and some that say they are female.
Also I have a hard time convincing other players that I am really female.
I guess most guys still dont think RL females play mmo's. However we are there. image
As was said before a lot of females play male characters just to keep it simple.

I am glad it isn't just me. I usually put a stop to it when they ask if I am a girl IRL, and I tell them that I'm 34 and married.

Actually, I don't even get hit on that much because people assume I am a guy from my personality. What I find really disturbing is when my husband and I are playing female characters together, and HE is getting hit on over and over while I am getting called "dude". Now, I am not sure if the disturbing part is that the other person doesn't have a clue that they are flirting with a big, hairy man while ignoring the real female, or that my husband just flirts back and doesn't let on. ::::12::

Sometimes I play a male character just to see what it is like on the other side. ;) I did have the odd experience of playing a male character in a low level group in EQ, explaining that I was female IRL when my husband came to buff us, and then found out that 2 of the other guys in the group were also female-- one playing on her husband's account and one who just didn't want to get hit on. Most of the male avatars I have met were really guys though.

Over all, I sometimes get the impression that most young guys playing these games assume to some degree that anyone they run into will either be a guy like them or a hot chick just waiting for some nerdy gamer love.

I played a female character in EQ quite a long time ago. Literally, her first time out of the starting town and directly into the newbie zone and she was being guarded by three guys. I had no idea who they were. After a few minutes of that they gave her better stuff.

With their protection and starting trinkets she could not have died had I tried my best to kill her. Well, okay, I suppose that I could have ran her straight into the shadowedmen...

Yep, it's different for female characters. lol

It was pathetic to be honest. ::::12:: On the other hand, I learned a lot about the other guys that I played the game with.... ::::18::

This behavior never stopped. Guys that I never spoke with were protecting her everywhere she went and frequently trying to give her items, even after she had what I considered to be relatively decent gear (obtained on my own mind you).

Some guys grew a crush on her and I hardly ever done more than have passing conversations. At least one fella followed her around.

It's just weird, I tell you - weird weird weird!
