I don't really mess with diplomacy? I'm really not that good at it, and no matter how much I read about it I can't seem to grasp how to succeed. I understand all the basics, using the cards, the "faction" with different people, and the basics of the conversation. I always fail though no matter how careful I am, and how much time I take.
I'm frustrated with it and don't really want to mess with it. I love everything else about the game.

Diplomacy, to me, is pretty straight forward. While I am a wee bit confused as to the intricacies, I have had success, and it seems as if the story is driven by it.
It seems simple. You have the cost, which basically tells you how many colored dots it costs you. You have the colored dots, which it represents how much you get or give your opponent when you play your card. In the upper right you have how many points you get, a range is given. This moves the meter in your favor. Then on the bottom left you have the cool down timer, which represents the range of turns before you can use the card again.
Keep the meter in your favor, until the number of turns on the bottom is zero and you win.
Im no diplomacy expert as is seen by my post, but if you read the story its actually entertaining.
Hope this helped a bit.
To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.
No you don't have to do it. I got bored with it by the time I was off the island, I figured it's something you can do after you've done everything else.
Having said that, it's really not that difficult. Just figure out 1 card rotation that gives you the maximum conversation points and always try and play your big cards as soon as possible. That will get you through most of the conversations early on. Later, you will have to plan it out a little better. But by then you will have more options and a better understanding of the game.
I also had some problem understanding the diplomacy via the ingame tutorial.
Then i found this excellent video on youtube that explains diplomacy very well, now I'm, lvl 23.
The rewards you get is very good, everything from food, weapons, armor to a rare mount, you also get better diplomacy cloths.
The rare mounts and other good stuff you get are gain via long diplomacy quest lines called Sagas.

After you have seen this vid you will have no problems at all mastering diplomacy.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
Nah, don't do it if you don't want to. I understand that there are some benefits but I have no interest in it and I've still been able to play the way I want.

Thanks for your help all.
If you don't like it, then I'd say don't do it. However if it's more about not understanding it then I'd suggest working out how to play it before dismissing it.
Diplomacy actually seems stupid easy to me.
Just get the great cards. Thats ... all.
On Isle of Dawn, there are some opponents that bring you into trouble, but:
1. You can slaughter Imps in the Temple for the "Gremlin Greed" card, one of the best diplo cards in the game (free 2 influence every 5-10 rounds, description on card that drops says something different but its really 5-10 rounds when you learn the card).
2. There is a nice quest that can give you "Charming Distraction" early on IoD. Full reset of all expression every 10-12 rounds. You can play this card to kill whatever trick the opponent wants to play when they play their "now give me a ***load of expression" card.
3. Both tricks are only necessary for some opponents. Otherwise most opponents on IoD are killable with a simple all Comments (those are cards that give influence with no cost, but give the opponent expression), all Assertions (those use up your own expression for even more influence) deck.
Dont really know much about afterwards. Because right now I'm busy with other things and before I get to diplomacy I plan to get all the good cards you can get, like Gremlin Greed, Fungal Footnote, Abnegation of X etc, first.
Diplomacy is really just a different way to "fight" your way though the game. You don't need to do it to play the game all the way though. You don't really gimp yourself though, as mentioned it can help with getting some things for raiding. The only other thing you really miss out on is the story that is told though the diplomacy quests. It does expand the world in that sense. But if you don't mind missing that, no big deal. The fact is you can come back to it later at any time or not at all, it is up to you. If you do choose to give it a go later you can simply return to your racial home and then work your way though that line of the game from there.
The only thing you will actually miss if you don't do any diplomacy at all is the diplomacy quests on the island because, of course, you can't go back once you leave. But that is not a huge loss either. You do get some nice diplo starting gear from the island but it is not game breaking or anything. starting from your racial hometown is just fine and you will out grow that gear soon enough.
My recommendation would be, so long as diplo doesn't lead your to wanting to /wrists, you should simply do the stuff on the island. This will give it a fair chance to grow on you as well as letting you see the island story from the diplo side and then if you still don't like it by the time you leave the island, hang it up and don't mess with it further until you feel like it. Of course if it bores you to the point of wanting to quit the game, don't worry about finishing the island stuff. You can still pick it up some where else. And of course, alternatively, you can also do your diplomacy on another character that you create later. There is no rule that says you have to level diplo on every toon you make.
All die, so die well.
i found diplomacy to be one of the best parts of VG. I had a blast lvlin, was the first sphere i got to max lvl. you get all kinds of cool lookin gear and it is where all the great lore is.
