"Lack of people"? Not that I've noticed. I'm on Remora, which is one of the less crowded servers (they just had a migration in which they allowed characters on several other servers to relocate to us to rebalance things) but in the Valkurm Dunes (second stage levelling area which is the first place you really start forming parties; I'm still pretty new) I never went more than five or ten minutes with my LFP flag up without getting a party. Granted, this is partially because I'm a mage, but it still indicates how there are a lot of people out there. And once I was out on the Dunes, there were always two or three other parties where we were. Desolate it ain't.
There's actually not that much out of game buying of items. What people generally buy out of game is gil (the in-game currency); they then buy what they want with the real money trade gil. It's a problem, like it is in every MMORPG. It's (mostly) bearable, though.
Yep, there's some storylines, of sorts. Amazin', no? It *is* Square, after all. :-) You'll find they progress pretty slowly, since you have to level up to keep following them.
