The secret is out at this year's Gamescom: Funcom will be launching their upcoming horror-themed MMO, The Secret World, in April 2012.

UPDATE: Sign ups for the official The Secret World beta will begin on August 26, 2011 -- just nine days from today!

Imagine a world where secret societies pull the strings of kings and presidents, where vampires are more than just a Hollywood fantasy, and where all the myths, legends and conspiracies are true. The Secret World is an MMO that breaks free from the confinements of character classes and levels and allows players to explore real-world locations with an engrossing storyline. Funcom will not only challenge but redefine long-established MMO standards.

“It has never been more rewarding working on ‘The Secret World’ than it is now,” says Senior Producer and Creative Director Ragnar Tørnquist. “The progress we are making in development allows the whole team to really enjoy just playing the game for hours on end. We are all looking forward to bringing in players through upcoming betas, and their feedback will be crucial to the further development of the game as we progress toward the April, 2012 launch.”

Find out more about the game over at the official The Secret World website.

Yay! I know it'll be pushed back, they always are, but this is at least a start :D

It looks like Funcom is making the same mistake they made with AoC and releasing too early. If they're just beginning to take beta sing-ups they won't have time to test and finish the game.

If they can't polish the game in 8 months of beta, they were doomed anyways. An 8 month beta is "long" these days. The engine is the one used in AoC, so that saves them from having to "test" that aspect of it, as it is continiously tested in AoC. The game has been in development for a long time, so I don't worry about that. I worry about them trying to cram what was obviously broken "open PvP" areas onto PvE'ers by sticking PvE resrouces into them exclusively (Anima for crafting). PvP in MMORPG's have been the downfall of too many. MMORPG's suck at PvP (outside of the balanced arena stype/battlefield etc).

I think they'll have plenty of time. Besides, I "signed up" for beta 2 years ago. Or at least that's how they put it on their site when you signed up for notifications and such. If so, I hope they kept all those that have been following TSW on the list instead of us being placed in the pile with whoever signs up later this month. Either way, I'll be signing up again just in case.

I signed up to beta for this game a couple of years ago. Been following it since then. I also got a deal with a subscription because I play AoC so I have a better chance at getting into beta.

Ecellent. Maybe can score a beta invite. Main reason I got a new 64 bit comp was this game.

Yes, I signed up away back then, too and I'm also signing up again (not taking any chances).

I may have been interested in the title but for one thing - Funcom. After shit they did with AoC i rather wait month or two after release and then based on players opinion either ignore it or try it.
