I just wanted to post my opinion about billboards, if these billboards are the ones I am thinking they are
I played AO on and off for years now. It has a uniqueness as a game, that makes one appreciate the creation of a world unlike other cookie cut ideas out there(fantasy being all very similar etc). I remder seeing a billboard, in-game, flashing an advertisement one day, for a company in real. I thought it was the coolest thing. It didn't bother me at all. Most of us play the games to escape to one degree or another, or just have fun. But to see that a company recognizes us (as online game players) and is willing to spend money on these companies to advertise with them... doesn't bother me one iota. Not to mention, it is a sign that there is more money coming into the game creators pocket, which hopefully is a good indicator, things are going well for them. I think it's actually a credit to the industry to see it coming to this...
However, having said that, there is always the possibility that we could get burried by advertising in game. I sure as heck hope it never happens. The occasional billboard is np, add the fact that in AO, you can turn them off... even better(if it bothers you). But getting slammed around every turn, seeing logos on cars/vehicles and other objects, IMO would be too much.
Of course, I could be way off here, and the billboard text that was mentioned in the newsletter that arrived in my email-box today could just have been for in-game text. Heh. Either way, I thought I'd post my 2 cents. What do you think?

I wouldnt mind running across and old faded Coca-Cola billboard in game. But if theres a brand new billboard in the middle of the busiest town with a real company on it, I think it'd take away from the atmosphere.

and of course the faded billbaord for a utopian subdivision "coming soon"
In the newsletter, when we talk about the "billboards" and the "billboard text," that's just our name for the text that will show up on your screen when you enter a town or a named area or something. Like, when you enter a town in the game, it might show some text on your screen that says "Las Vegas Outskirts" or something like that. It's just to show you when you enter a town or named area in the game, it's not for advertising.
We just called it a billboard because it appears on your screen, in the play area for a few seconds, like a billboard, but it contains only in-game information, not advertising or anything like that.
woohoo
Minor advertisment wouldn't bother me as well and I think if a online venture can get some to help there capita then so be it.
But I would like to see it in the sign in screen or on the forum or game board
or even in the Newsletter but in game might be to much I agree unless its set up as possible "item" related such as a real life in game item that you find taking a example from above you find a coke can
you get a little blurb of advertisment(clicking on description or in useofitem)or as in items you might buy in a shop.
Hmm now will coke cans be found on every turn
Well... there you have it. Thank you FEDesign!

I don't mind Billboard Text in a mmorpg, as long as it makes sense in the games setting. IN The Matrix Online, there are some Billboards that advertise movies and things that would be around in The Matrix. If a movie was advertised in a fantasy game like Everquest II, that would turn me off.
Quoted from above for emphasis, people seem to have missed it.

It's not advertising.
