I've been on the search for a new game for a while now. I played WoW for a good 5 years, and had plenty of good times in it, but it's time to move on. I've tried all the big name MMOs and they all seem too similar to WoW for my tastes. I am just tired of the grind to max level, the gear grind, and the lack of things to do in most MMOs. LOTRO and EQ2 provided some nice distractions in the form of housing for me (love housing), but it didn't seem enough for me.
I'm just looking for something different. I would go through the "here's what I liked in MMOs" speech, but I have recently gone back to some old ones in hopes of that spark coming back... and it's just not there. I don't know if it's because the games aren't the same anymore, or because I have different tastes now. But like I said, I'm just looking for something different.
Not necessarily looking for a sandbox, but definitely not looking for your standard WoW themepark either.

ever try Lineage 2 recently? It's been updated a lot since its release with new skills and enhancements, very fun to play I must say with a guild to pvp with!
Check it out sometime!

EVE is probably the most different MMO that is going strong right now. It really isn't a gear grind. There is some grind for money, but it is more a question of deciding continually , how much do I want to risk, what are the potential rewards? It feels more like poker than D&D if you know what I mean.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
I've never even looked into L2, so I'll give that a glance.
I've tried Eve a couple times, and like many couldn't get into it. My biggest issue with it is the people and all the "lol.. u mad bro?" stuff going on. Eve is a pvp game to it's core and it brings out the worst in people. I suppose if I could find a good corp that wouldn't be too bad though. Maybe I'll give it one more go.
Games that are Multiplayer, Online and at least a bit different from WOW and all the similar games:
Hellgate Global - Diablo 1 goes 3DFPS, Online and replaces magic with tech. Same mechanics, principles, just the fireball shoots from a gun or electronic device that allows the user to 'cast' a fireball instead of Elf Magic. Fun killing demons and zombies with your friends.
APB Reloaded - Be a Cop or Robber in a GTA like world where you can steal cars and program your playlist for the Car stereo, etc.
Battle of Immortals - 2.5D With tons of events and things to do (F2P with cash shop) fantasy, RPG but combat is quick (outside of boss raids) and you generally fly through quests. 120+ levels
The Chosen - 2.5D similar to BOI, has Auto Combat so you can do other things while finishing your quests (just watch your screen to ensure you aren't about to die or need to Loot something) Very New, Empty and still working towards a transition from Open Beta to Live.
PathofExile - Not released yet - Looks to be what Diablo 3 wanted to be, but may fail to be. This game has great promise. It is in Closed Beta currently, but reviewing content on YouTube and their site gives me hope for this one.
Other than that, everything I've played or reviewed got/seemed boring after a day because it was either too close to what has already been released and played to death or the quality was/appears to be just too low to tolerate.
Thanks for that list Frotus. I haven't heard of any of those games so I'll check them out!
Also be sure to try DDO out if you haven't already, with the right people it can be a very entertaining game.
